Whilst there is much good advice and reference points above I have a thought that missing the "There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza" route you miss out on the learning curve. If everybody copies from others where will advances and improvements come from encouragement to innovate and experiment should not be overlooked

A few posts up........curious how "replica cars" has a positive vibe whereas replica postage stamps, works of art or even lathe parts are referred to fakes, clones, copies suggesting negative overview |

For many years I used Edwards metals in Brum they were located in the shadow of VIlla Park, small enough to be helpful and encourage loyalty. Have never seen them mentioned hereabouts |

Thread: Cross drilling |
19/06/2017 14:47:42 |
I would drill a square section piece lengthways the dia. of the rod, drill a ,cross hole dia vertically through the lengthways hole, couple of threaded holes to clamp, face off one end of the block to give positive location. Material and hardening to choice and need. Vertically drill hole cut of surplus, piercing saw or Dremel, step and repeat as required I am a simple soul, there could be very complicated alternatives |

Gordon brown.......i said it was an unusual combination!!!!!!!!!!! Jason b...........Mike said ball tip, if you asked for ball tip pen you would be offered a biro type?? Rounded tip suggests a blob with no angular edges . 38C in the conservatory its too.hot to bother. John

Thread: Chinese Spot Drills |

I have in the past purchased c/drills from Drill Services these range from O to 4/O the smallest having a tip of 0.010". I paid about a fiver then, but being double ended halves the cost. No ides how this compares with info above John |
Thread: Making a Rotring pen body |

. Mick berrisford........a fountain pen with a ball tip.....unusual combination😈😈 I started work in 1952 as a junior clerk in the ledger office a the West India Docks. Biros, available from 1946,, were banned by Head Office, First task was to choose the style of nib to fit the TWO pensholders issued. The ledgers were the size and weight of a council paving slabs ,..... red ink for non chargeable entries, black for chargeable entries. About mid 60s HO announced that Biros were to be issues to staff (Red and black of course!). No body had thought to inform the clerk in charge of stationery who had amassed sufficient stock for that century and the next. He dumped the lot in the WPB. The sight of so many attractively designed boxes, each style of nib with its own name I went into "might come in useful " mode..............now if anybody has a polite suggestion as to what to do with several thousand pen nibs...........................

Thread: Grind stone for drill grinding jig |
17/06/2017 12:02:53 |
I purchased a fine diamond disc, it happened to be just smaller than my Mini KEF grinder which has an added base to which the Picador drill sharpener is bolted. The disc is a tad short of Gwheel dia leaving both wheels available for"Normal" use , thought was given to washers and the oomph on nut security. The flex is long enough, and the unit portable enough to be used outside the workshop which is my preference. As a modeller my needs may be lightweight to other forum readers John the bodger and KISS associate member |
Thread: Pocketmags withdraw Windows 7 and 8.0 Support |

Michael G....I found that difficult to understand???????.............. Some may find this amusing. My wife retains every scrap of info on banks, insurance etc. The household insurance requires several volumes of amendments issued. We developed a drainage problem (pitch fibre pipes) Having some experience of insurance t and c we were clearly covered . The insurers denied liability despite quoting the exact clause they insisted that they had never issued them. I refused to send the originals or send copies. I went into 'See you in court" mode or "Come and see for your self" Three legal eagles did exactly that and were shown the clauses that they stated did not exist. They accepted liability and arranged the repairs. No apology, mumble about computer error. I estimate it consumed in total about a week of their business costs. |
Thread: Was in Penrith and this pulled up. |

As no more as no more than a silly question, if you owned it would you actually use it??????
A story you won't believe , about 1960 drove my moggie to a club rally held in Malvern, I stopped at a garage on the bank of the R Avon it resembled an old coaching inn with a courtyard type stable/Garage units. The attendant looked at my vehicle and said "you into old cars.? I had a bloke done a runner owing garage rental of £150 , my solicitor says I can sell it to get my money back he unlocked a door revealing a type 35 Bugatti it's yours if you want it. Being the weekend, 150 miles from home, in days before I had bank account or credit card I could do nothing but weep. I did say you would not believe it but it really is true. |
Thread: Rolling brass sheet |
15/06/2017 14:24:05 |
Rolling thin sheet can be over engineered. As a past builder in O to G3 locos a pile of newspapers a hefty lump of round bar longer than the sheet as a rolling pin adopt a known position facing Mecca and burn of a few calories. Remember to check the bar surface for 'dings' and place paper between roller and sheet. Should the tyros in our midst be unfamiliar with the term 'rolling pin ' MIchael G of this Parish. Has been placed on alert😜 |

Sod .....thank you that's the point I was making. I once attended a conference where the Publicity Officer was receiving a lot of "stick" unable to control his anger he grabbed the microphone and shouted "there's a lot of publicity going on that nobody knows about". That sort of sums up my knowledge of the British Association🙄 |

MichaeiG sir.....I neither shout or display bad manners my nanny was very strict on such matters. To those who responded to the question I posed earlier I was asking who could "name" their activites NOT WHO IS GOOD AT LOOKING THINGS UP. If you answered from memory well done, but I assume that you are in a select minority On a slightly different thread(?) I have always thought that the BA thread was more pleasing to the eye as were certain threads in the ME range On the question of screwcutting perhaps given their age and the types of lathes available they were never intended for that purpose, hand use or specialist eg watchmaking eqpt. was envisaged For those not conversant with BA certain of the odd number threads matched the Imperial rod size that was available in times past. LBSC made good use of this fact John |
13/06/2017 16:02:12 |
Following Michael Gs full title of the BA, I wonder if any body could name any other of their activites??????????? Some local (E Devon) reading revealed that on a whim they decided to measure the difference in tidal range between the mouth of the R Axe and Westquantoxhead on the N Somerset coast No particular reason just seemed an interesting thing to do.......... Thread: Model Engineers Workshop Lost The Plot |
10/06/2017 20:15:17 |
Jason B ......just why should there be errors in submitted work? If someone submits work and receives payment part of which is paid for by the subscriber surely an accurate and error free manuscript is a minimum requirement What information do you have that the cover price would double, have you invented this cost? Have you even made a enquiry to anybody as to whether subscribers would be willing to pay more for an 'error free' magazine? Given the cost of setting up a workshop and the cost of materials, plus a modest calculation for depreciation on your expenditure over a period, doubling the cost the cover price would be almost insignificant.
