Thread: what do you use when designing?
29/10/2016 13:47:54

Posted by Spurry, 28/10/16

I've used Tcad since v2, now using v18 (which is not the latest incarnation) and am still trying to find the new locations for menu items that the programmers deemed fit to move around from where they were in the previous version.

Why do they move those menu items around? I still have a version of Word 98 which is so simple to use, later versions have got harder and harder to find things on , to the point where I rarely use the program unless I really have to.

Progress?

Not sure about the cellophane wrap, have you tried getting one off!,

Thread: Couple of things at Lidl
25/10/2016 16:15:46

I have used both Aldi and Lidl chargers in our mower repair workshops, both gave pretty good results. Most of the batteries we were charging were standard 12v lead acid, fitted to ride on mowers, and usually not in particularly good nick. They would certainly pick up most discharged batteries equally well as the Optimate we had before. Several of the American ride-ons now have a small 2 pin socket on the dash or under the bonnet to connect a similar charger for long term trickle maintainance over the winter season.

Thread: Bee Keeping
04/10/2016 10:31:23

If you want to keep bees without any hassle (or honey!) put up a bug house with plenty of bamboo tubes in it, making sure they are clear right through. If you are lucky you will be rewarded with being the custodian of a collection of mason bees or leaf cutter bees. These little bees are amazing, and give me and family hours of fun watching them work through their relatively short life cycle. No sting, no honey, but amazing work ethic, and amazing engineering capabilities! Well worth investing in a bug house just for that, we now have three on our fence right by the patio, where we can sit and watch.

Thread: Propane bottle gauge.

When I sold Calor gas years ago, the Fire Brigade used 19kg propane cylinders for portable floodlights and blowtorches. They were required to have a full cylinder on board at all times, and even if the cylinder had only been used for five minutes, it had to be changed! We used those cylinders for the heating in the shop!

Thread: Lifetime Guarantee ( Ford)

Reminds me of the old joke about the watch with the lifetime gaurantee on the mainspring. When the spring broke, it slashed your wrist!

You could try 'Aspen' alkylate fuel, I have been selling this fuel in my mower shop for some time now, and a lot of people who have been buying Coleman fuel have switched over to it. It works out a lot cheaper than Coleman, under half price I think, but is the same make up. It also works well for the biker boys who lay up their machine over winter. Put some in the tank and run it, no problems starting in the spring! Also, obviously works for mowers too! Five year shelf life helps, that's 4 7/8s of a year longer than modern unleaded!!

Thread: Hi from Hampshire
18/09/2016 13:20:42

Hi, my name is Adrian, I live in Horndean, near Portsmouth. I have been into modelling since an early age, starting with gliders an rubber powered planes, boats and cars. Being tutored by men flying powered aircraft with new fangled escapement r/c gear, nothing quite like the smell of the diesels! Bought myself a Simat 101 lathe back in the 80s, which I didn't get much chance to use until about five years ago, when we moved and I got a shed! Two years ago bought myself a Arc CJ18 and last year a Clarke CMD10 mill. Have built a 'wobbler' and just finished another simple reciprocating engine, but am looking forward to starting my next project which is a retirement present from my firm, (29 years!) It is a Stuart beam engine, so will be a bit of a challenge. I am sure that I will be using this site to ask lots of questions, and hope to learn a lot from you members. Thanks in anticipation

Adrian
