Thread: empty drill case
18/11/2017 20:24:14

I wrote 'about £20' but it may well have been less than $30Ca back when the exchange rate was around 2:1 in our favour. Def much cheaper in Ca, than the UK, where I bought several items in $Ca when they would have been the same, or more, numerically in GBP - if even vailable in the UK.

Canadian Tire and

Lee Valley were always the favourites of several outlets. Likely go back again next year - before we get too old to travel that far. SiL usually brings something over each year (probably as a peace offering to me!).

Here is my drill box. Starts at 40 thou and progresses (in increasing size) from no.60 to no.1, then in 1/64ths (from1/16 to 1/2" at one end and 26 letter drills at the other end.

A few missing, currently, but the whole lot only cost me about £20 when I bought them (admittedly, about ten years ago). Good value from Canadian Tire.

Thread: Acetylene regulator / propane
18/11/2017 16:39:15

Have you read all 585 pages? That is some epic to press home the point of using the proper kit for the job and regular service maintenence/testing/replacement. I've got to about page 30 and find it absorbing - a real total depth analysis of the incident.

I occasionally chat with a proper aeronautical assessor for these sort of things; his attitude to failure is a stark comparison to that of many people I have worked with. Failsafe means just precisely that, when things fail at altitude.

£1200-500. Keep it in perspective - there is a quality difference between a good target pistol and a potentially use-once low-life weapon. I doubt the supply of criminal ammunition is a cheap commodity, mind.

But, yes, the availability of uncontrolled weapons and ammunition is rediculous. Law abiding citizens keep their guns and ammo locked away securely, whereas the criminals seem to often carry theirs around in their pockets.

While I might disagree with the way firearms can be owned in the US, theft (pikey style) is virtually nonexistent. I recall someone telling me they saw a notice at the entrance to a tractor dealership lot which read something like ' WARNING. If you are here at night you may still be here in the morning'. A simple warning that worked.

Thread: Boring the MT2 on spindle
17/11/2017 23:10:42

you'd notice all those off centre holes you've been drilling.

Not necessarily. An off centre drill might just drill a bigger hole.  Think here that boring bars don't bore off centre holes.

Thread: Rotary converter
17/11/2017 23:05:20

I don't think balance between phases and voltage tolerances are the same. Three phases all at +10% is not the same as two @ +10% and the other @-6%.

Whether that would make any difference operationally, I don't know. But we always tried to even out the legs on three phase generators as much as possible.

Thread: Acetylene regulator / propane
17/11/2017 10:13:04

Propane is at about 320 psi at about the same temperature.

I would rather believe engineering toolbox dot com, which shows about 10Bar at 300K.

Using the correct regulator is a simple enough principle to follow - for safety reasons alone.

Thread: Damaged Back Gear on Malcar 41/2" Lathe
16/11/2017 15:17:43

I have a gear with a row of grubscrews shaped to the tooth profile. I would prefer to insert grub screws, shape to a bit less than the tooth profile, then fill with braze and recut the teeth.

Not totally sure, but at 1300 I think you are running in crusilite element territory.

Surely if one clicks accidentally on the ignore button there is a confirmation request before that poster is ignored?

I see no way of unblocking, if that were the case. I've never blocked anyone, to my knowledge. And usually if a post were to be blocked, the missing posts would be indicated (for continuity), even if the post were missing? Forum has some peculiar quirks, it seems.

Can anyone tell me why I cannot see the posts by Douglas Johnston, please? They are totally invisible, only known to exist from quotes and the 'lastest forum posts' list!

Thread: A model engineer gone wrong?
15/11/2017 13:40:10

I hope this guy isn't going to cause problems

There will be repercussions but I think that bloke will get what he deserves - a very long stretch - so he will cause no more problems, other than looking after him in a suitable institution.

There will always be 'bad apples' at some point in time. I hope he gets charged with complicity to murder or some such equivalent.

Of course, so far he is only charged with these several offences and not yet proven guilty on any of the charges against him. At times, the law is an ass, but hopefully this case will be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

If it were a terrorism type investigation the outcome would likely be easier to get a suitable conclusion. I do hope the police case is watertight.

Thread: Plug and Hole: Should the metals match?
14/11/2017 22:21:27

fit in the same metal will be as good as it can be and won't vary with temperature.

Well, for certain the hole and plug would change size by exactly the same if their temperature changes if they remain equal.

There is, of course, nothing preventing you making a plug with the cap being of different material to the actual plug core.

I wouldn't want a plug taking full pressure, if there were any chance of it being fired from its barrel at high velocity!

Thread: phosphor bronze interference fit
14/11/2017 15:55:41

A minimal shrink fit looks easy enough, as the housing and bush have, near as dammit is to swearing, the same expansion coefficient. So bush in the freezer and housing in the oven on low heat.

Thread: Plumbers Black
13/11/2017 06:16:40

Stovax black grate graphite polish is still available for woodburners -

Yes, but I expect it is not the same as George's tube of zebrite, - now that elf'n'safety have had their way with it!

Thread: Barely can spell 'lathe', looking to get into the hobby
12/11/2017 21:46:45

Tomasz,

This thread **LINK** is a good read, even if just for interest. A lot of it, but that is what you could do eventually!

Start with one cylinder and progress to multi-cylinder engines.

Just don't let that thread turn you off due to the complexity. If Dean can do it, someone else can (but not me, for sure!sad). I'm no idea what Dean is like with balsa wood, but I expect he would excel with any medium? So you can too.

You've already started - you are here. Good luck in the new hobby.

Thread: Leaking coolant tank
12/11/2017 16:39:55

The product Pour-15 is used by many for coating/sealing fuel tanks should be ideal for a duty such as this. Seems like getting a good coating applied might be a challenge.

Thread: Lathe unwanted taper
11/11/2017 23:14:27

If you have a boring head ....

Simple little gems like that make rreading these posts worthwhile! Locked safely away until needed - unless I forget it!

Thread: How long does it take you to make stuff?
11/11/2017 18:31:55

I'm a bit like Andrew and mechman. Getting the right order of operations and making things over-engineered for safety or longevity is likely a stumbling block.

With the OP's item. It may be better to think along the lines of how long it would take to make a second similar one. Certainly not as long as the first! It is a bit different making one-offs with instructions compaered to sorting out the best design from scratch.

With that item, minimum weight would be one target, so tube and 3-D printing might be the best way to go with that, from scratch - unless the wheelchair is powered by other means than the occupier!
