Thread: Macro-photography

Keep the macros/close ups coming people.

They're brilliant.

"... Hi Daniel, lovely composition there of this tiny insects. Love that tiny bee hovering in front of that flower! Don't part with your D90 (I have one also) the crop sensor plus your 105mm will give it a longer reach. Try getting extension tubes or a teleconverter. Did you use any flash on this? ..."

Hello Raphael,

No intention of giving up the D90 ... laugh

Although it's more hassle than the modern phones, I still find it worthwhile.

I usually have a ring flash attached to the 105. I would need to look for whether

it fired, or not, on the images.

Super idea for a thread by the way.

Great stuff, Daniel ... and that 105mm will give you much more working distance, and better ‘handling’ than my 55 [which is best used for static subjects]

MichaelG.

Thank's Michael.

As you say, the 105 does give a practical working distance.

This thread has inspired me to dig out the camera and have a play today.

As it probably is with microscopy, what I enjoy is being able to access our

everyday world, which we cannot really appreciate with the naked eye.

Brilliant idea for a thread.

I do agree with Michael G. that modern phone cameras are quite amazing.

I still don't have one, though. It would mean that I would probably part with

my trusty Nikon D90. The lens I use is the Nikkor 105mm Macro.

I'm no expert, but I do enjoy close up photography.

Thread: Arc Euro Trade - Quality?
14/05/2020 07:13:23

I'm another "happy" ARC customer.

Their reputation is what really counts, and their products represent

good, honest value for money.

But, as usual, don't expect a Rolls Royce for the price of a Ford.

ARC tools do what I ask of them in my particular environment.

Thread: Shaft Tolerance
14/05/2020 07:00:43

Hi Chris,

I would suggest a difference between the two items of around 0.02mm.

That is, if the bush is exactly 20mm id, then the shaft should be 20.02.

Or, shaft 20.00 mm od, then the bush 19.98 mm id.

Daniel

The riff in question marked the beginning, middle and end of my

Thread: Where do you put your chuck key?
11/05/2020 09:15:48

Well put Mike.

Just to clarify, I meant that the spindle go/stop/reverse lever is in the stop position.

I also don't go as far as isolating the machine.

As you say, there is a continuous, very conscious, yet pragmatic  risk assessment

ongoing in the activity.

Absolutely concur with the previous posts, that unless actually executing a task,

the lathe is off.

Naturally, every rule is accompanied by an exception; my concession to the above

is when drilling with the tailstock. Then I will leave it running. But, the tailstock is

withdrawn right to the other end of the bed, and I use a keyless chuck.

I don't use a QCTP, so tool changes are made with the lathe switched off.

Hmmm....

Tidy, clean workshops...!

Thought I would share this. Although woodworking and not metal,

retired legendary wood guru Frank Klausz shows his retirement shop.

It's the stuff of my dreams laugh

A big +1 to all the above posts.

This forum is a haven of sanity and amiability in these testing times.

Moderators, and many regular contributors, should feel justifiably proud of what they give to us all.

Many thanks from me ... yes

Mick 🇫🇴

smile That brings back some memories, Mick.

My Grandfather had one. It would have been around 1974/5, and I would have been seven or eight at the time.

Was the first powered vehicle I was allowed to 'drive'. Hours of fun being more or less dragged along behind it.

One thing I wasn't that keen on was, in order to stop it, one had to press a flap of steel onto the top of the spark plug. Gave me a healthy belt every time. From memory, it took me a worringly long time to discover that the employment of a piece of timber (dry), worked better.

Happy days.

Probably worth signalling for the obvious deceptive practice, but personally wouldn't pursue it further than that.

To John and the wider audience,

Please accept my most sincere apology, for my post of yesterday.

I also agree wholeheartedly that it was removed ASAP.

At least you got a warmer welcome from the others on here.

No excuses; I should have known better than to post after a particularly difficut day.

I hope it hasn't put you off the forum.

Once again, I am very sorry for that.
