Thread: What Did You Do Today (2016)
29/02/2016 20:29:41

Visited the eye clinic today, I'm glad to say my eye is now free of metal. teeth 2 The doc got it out with a drill! It's left a tiny dimple but that should heal with time. Took about 5 mins and was completely painless.

Thread: QCTP For Boxford Model A
29/02/2016 08:26:13

Nick that's a very generous offer! I would gladly take it off your hands. Where are you based?

That said you don't sound very impressed with it? face 20

28/02/2016 22:09:18

I'm considering treating myself to a QCTP for my Boxford. I think I've decided on the Dixon type for the extra capacity over the piston type. I can't afford a proper Dixon so it will be one from either RDG tools or Chronos. I was just wondering if one is better than the other? The RDG version seems to be made by HBM (China) and the Chronos version made by Soba (India)? Anyone have experience with either? And know if the holders are interchangeable?

Thought I would share this YouTube channel I found. Lots of interesting experimental models built by some clever Japanese fellow. A good few hours viewing!

My Monday appointment is with an eye clinic so I'm sure I'll be in good hands. Im not sure a scan would reveal anything its that small?

27/02/2016 18:47:14

My eye is feeling a lot better now, I was proscribed some ointment which seems to be doing the trick. It's still there though! It's no bigger than a pin prick, amazing how much irritation something that small can cause!

A good place to pick up old bikes are autojumbles. I don't know where you are based but try and find one local to you. I know the is one tomorrow at Newark. It costs to get in but the prices are usually far more reasonable.

Not today but yesterday spent the afternoon in A&E with a steel splinter embedded in my eye! crying 2 Irritating to say the least. Doc couldn't remove it! Have to go back on Monday. Wear safety goggles people!

Why not auction it for a week with a starting price of £20? It will find its own value.

Thread: dore westbury mk2
26/02/2016 21:18:36

The Dore Westbury is very cheap at £175! snap his arm off. I know because I just paid a lot more than that for a Mk1. It's a lovely little machine!

Thread: Steel...what kind?...

What you have described sounds just like titanium! You can test it if you have some swarf from the material. Gather a small pinch and light it with a blowtorch. If it bursts into bright white sparks it's titanium.

The guy had no idea what it was! After I explained what it was and how it worked he let me have it for a fiver! It needed new wheels and it was covered in black grease but I still felt a bit Dick Turpin. Lol.

Hahaha face 20 well they were free!

23/02/2016 18:00:26

I was wondering if any of you guys are like me, always trawling boot sales and auctions etc looking for bargains? I thought it might be interesting to have a latest purchase thread in a similar vein to the continually running "what did you do today" and "workshop progress" threads?

AND I wanted to brag about some of my recent good buys. face 20 I seems to have got lucky a few times recently including:

Marlco knurling tool £5 disgust

667 Carbide tips free with another purchase! smile o

Thread: Which lathe?
16/02/2016 21:16:56

A few things to consider:

The myford headstock bore is a little restrictive for larger diameter stuff. But parts and acessories are easy to get hold of.

The others are more capable but obviously physically bigger and heavier. Can you shift such heft easily? Parts and acessories slightly less common.

Don't over look the Boxford AUD its somewhere in between.

Yes, I have. More pictures and description in an album. I think I kept the drawings of the mounts somewhere. I'll have a look if you're interested.

Thread: Milling - Turning Axis Wheels the Wrong Way
16/02/2016 08:27:24

Mr duffer I sometimes find myself doing the same thing. My mill has handles on both sides of the table. I find myself using the left handle for left to right and the right handle for right to left.

John - I have the same mill, have you fitted scales to the other axis?

Thread: Deciphering the carbide tip code?
15/02/2016 22:12:28

Thanks for that, I'll take a look.

15/02/2016 21:20:50

A few years back my Dad purchased a small box full of about 150 carbide tips for the princely sum of £5 yes they've been sitting in my draw ever since, I really should look for some holders. Or make some. Just wondering if anyone can read the alien language (codes) on the boxes and enlighten me as to its meaning.
