Thread: Inverter |
12/03/2019 19:27:00 |
The manual for the Jaguar Cub inverter I have on my Myford says, 'For up to 10 starts (max) per hour the inverter may be controlled by switching the unit ON & OFF by a line supply contactor only, for up to 10 starts (max) per minute the electronic RUN / STOP input on terminhals 10 & 11 should be used. In either case the motor will freewheel to a standstill and ramp up to set speed following a 300 millisec (approx) delay. John |
Thread: Single phase verses 3 phase motor |

IMHO good solid 3 phase motors of that capacity can often be picked up S/U for a song. With all the advantages of Soft Start, Infinitely Variable Speed and even Over-speed a VFD is a no-brainer. I have them fitted to both my mill and lathe and wouldn't go back to single phase machines. The same here, also fitted one to my Meddings Pillar drill which makes things so much easier when countersinking a hole after drilling, I don't have unscrew the pulley guard, loosen the motor, move the belt, c'sink the hole, loosen the moter, move the belt, lever it back to tension the belt and replace the guard. |
Thread: Insulation tester - some guidance please |

I believe the Megger linked to by Michael is not working correctly, the meter is indicating a reading when not being cranked, without operating the handle the needle will be at 1 end of the scale, don't remember which end but I used that type of instrument for a few years before digital meters were available. Emgee That's the normal position for the needle to be when not being used, my 500V model which is the same as shown works perfectly, a quote from the manual describing the how they work, "there is no appreciable restoring force to make the pointer come to rest in any particular position" |
Thread: Twin Tube HF fluorescent lighting for the workshop |
12/10/2018 07:08:29 |
I use LED floodlights and LED GLS bulbs in my small workshop and I do get a slight strobe effect, but like Andrew says in post 2 the noise of the machine is more than enough to warn you that it's working. |
Thread: New WD40 Can |

I always buy my WD40 in 5L containers, it comes with a sprayer but I also use empty ones from furniture polish, window cleaner etc.

Thread: Myford Super 7 metric change gears |

Posted by JasonB on 15/08/2018 07:32:44:
HPC gears are 20pa not the 14.5pa used on Myfords. Surprising what comes up when you put 47T Myford gear into Google. Home and Workshop also usually have a good selection of "odd" Myford gears"
Edited By JasonB on 15/08/2018 07:38:19 Sorry about that, I always thought they were 20pa.

Thanks for the suggestion! I contacted Myford directly and got a not so helpful response. They don't make a 47 tooth wheel and they don't know where I could get one. RDG doesn't have one listed either. 45 or 50 but nothing in between.
Thank you Brian, that sounds like a bargain. What would shipping to Sweden come to?
Best regards HPC lists 47T spur gears, I don't know if they are in stock though. http://www.hpcgears.com/n/products/12.spur_gears/spur_gears.phpV |
Thread: EMC filters for VFDs? |
10/07/2018 07:36:49 |
Is one supposed to check them for filters? I have two, a Jaguar Cub and a Hitachi, these I bought and just connected up, mains in and motor out, I haven't checked but I doubt if there's space to add even something as small as an X2 or Y2 cap'. I would just assume that the manufacturer would have put them in if necessary. John |
Thread: Gear blanks - which materials, or where to buy? |
25/06/2018 07:15:26 |
A quick look at the materials used by gear manufacturers comes up with, HPC bevel gears are supplied in EN8 and Davall in either EN1A or EN32, these are their standard materials, I don't know if the ones used in chucks would be made in anything different. John |
Thread: Parting off blade |
15/06/2018 13:44:21 |
Perhaps I'm lucky but up till now I've had no problems parting off on my Myford S7 with quite a small HSS blade, 1.4mm wide x 9.5mm deep mounted a rear toolpost, but if parting a diameter greater than say 16mm I do start with only a small amount, say 4mm of tool sticking out of the holder and then move it further out in stages, is this the normal way or am I being too cautious? I did find that unless the tool is perfectly square at the end it will flex and try to go in at a slight angle if too much is protruding from the holder. John |

Thread: Glass cutting ! |

Posted by J Hancock on 03/03/2018 19:52:15:
Since I am the only house left on the development that hasn't had all the frames replaced by plastic I always get the undivided attention of the various 'reps' trying to sell plastic/double glazing. Pain, pain.
I had exactly the opposite experience, I drew up a list with all the window sizes and took it to a local firm, he gave me a quote of about £2500 and I asked him to come and have a look at the job to discuss details, he refused and said he'd only look at it if gave him the order, I went somewhere else. John |
03/03/2018 15:30:32 |
As an example of cost I've just had a replacement double glazed unit fitted with toughened glass, size was 900mm x 800mm, total cost of unit plus fitting £80. John Edited By Sandgrounder on 03/03/2018 15:31:06 |
Thread: In praise of angle grinders |
21/02/2018 15:34:33 |
And don't be tempted to do what I did, putting a cup brush onto the threaded spindle I screwed it on a couple of turns and the thinking I would be clever in saving time switched on, the grinder accelerated to about 10000RPM in about a microsecond and the brush screwed itself onto the spindle so hard I had to hacksaw it off. Thread: Safety matting - today's Screwfix offer. |
02/02/2018 15:16:35 |
When I first heard the term many years ago I was never sure as to whether they were 'duck' or 'duct' boards, pronunciation almost the same and 'duct boards' always seemed more logical as they were boards to cover ducts and keep your feet dry. John |
Thread: Tail stock die holder. |
27/01/2018 08:10:09 |
My die holder has 'The Lockwood Tool Co' Huddersfield on the box, use it most of the time on the S7 but will single point screw cut or at least take the bulk off if it's about M8 or above in stainless and finish with a die.. John |

I worked for Mullard in the 1960's and probably read the same instruction as you that was sent out worldwide from Philips Eindhoven, this ordered that all Beryllium metal and compounds other than materials used in specially equipped areas be collected and sent off for safe disposal. John, It was Mullard Research Labs when I joined and Philips by the time I left. Which Mullard site were you at? Russell I worked at Mullard Magnetic Components, Southport, it had moved from Mullard Blackburn Works in the 1950's along with a Valve Manufacturing Facility which was on a different site in Southport. A while ago I posted this, it shows me on the right hand side of the photo, we were casting some Nimonic type alloys used for Tungsten wire swaging. http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/images/member_albums/152997/671635.jpg John Edited By Sandgrounder on 19/01/2018 14:17:46 |

John Your reference to 'safe disposal ' brought a smile to my face in the 70's I worked with induction heating equipment the older models were 'valve sets' one the valves within the machine was the size of a goldfish bowl and contained beryllium copper. When the valve failed I simply purchased a new one the failed one was taken back in part exchange however this practice stopped and I was stuck with a valve I phoned the local council who told me I couldn't dispose of it I would need a specialised company to deal with it's safe disposal and to do that the best quote I had was £1200.00 !!! H
I won't ask you what you did with it, you never know who's reading these forms, LOL John |
