Thread: Hi all

Hi Neil

Welcome to the forum. There doesn't seem to be that many members here in the south. Whereabouts are you? I'm in the Dundalk area.

Thread: Help with oil leak on Warco GH1236 lathe
26/11/2017 19:22:17

As Bazyle pointed out, the shaft does not rotate. I don't feel like overhauling the gearbox so I think I will seal over the shaft. Thanks all for your replies.

Hi Chris,

that is a good idea. Will do that.

Jerry,

is the large black allen key plug at the 4 o'clock position to the large gear not the fill plug?

Rgds

oil leak.jpg

26/11/2017 00:28:02

I have an oil leak on my lathe and I 'believe' it is coming from the shaft shown in the image. As can be seen I applied some paper strips to the area and the upper strip is dry whereas the lower one has oil on it. I can move the shaft slightly by pushing on it radially.

Any thoughts as to how I can fix this?

PS: Image to follow when I figure out how to upload.

Thread: Any advice regarding buying a boring head
01/05/2017 21:37:53

Thanks Jason, that thread seems to have eluded me for some reason. Apologies for starting this very similar thread.

Hi,

I have a current project that requires me to bore out some holes to just less than 12mm. I can do it on the lathe but I would also like to have a boring head for use with my Warco VMC mill. I would like to buy a boring head and some cutting tools that will kind of future proof my purchase. Anybody any advice as to what size head I should buy? If I buy say a 62mm head does this prevent me from boring small holes or if I buy say a 30mm does this prevent me from boring large holes?

Thread: OO Gauge loco
16/01/2017 13:44:27

Many thanks David and Ady1.

I have just ordered Guy Williams book to get me started and I will look up the books recommended by Peter when I receive this first book. Thanks for your responses and the link to the rmweb.co.uk website. There looks to be plenty of good info to be found there.

Thanks Peter, I will look those books up.

Hi,

I would like to build OO gauge locos and rolling stock. I can't find plans any where online and was wondering if anybody in the forum has any experience of building this particular gauge.

Thread: What steel to use for Kozo's Shay
03/10/2016 23:04:54

Ok, thanks everybody for your input but to be honest I'm getting more confusedsad.

I think I'll opt for Jason's suggestion...

"I would also go for EN1A for the majority of the round stock, square and flat bar is more likely to be available as EN3, keep the EN8 for axles, cranks etc.

Many thanks

Paul

thanks Jason, just read through that article twice. I think I might go for EN8M as it's harder than EN1A. But what exactly does 'free machining' mean. I presume it means easy to machine, is that correct?

03/10/2016 19:20:56

Hi,

I've recently bought Kozo Hirako's excellent books 'Building the Shay' and 'Building the Heisler'.

I'm itching to start building the Shay but I have absolutely no stock material to work with. I plan to get a few 3 metre lengths of steel of different diameters as well as some flat sections.

Whenever I ask people as to what type of steel to get I get many conflicting answers, such as:

"EN1A Pb as its so easy to machine."

"Get EN3B which is cheaper than EN1A ."

"Get EN8A steel which is better than EN1A."

Because I want to get a selection of profiles, I don't want ot end up with steel that is not versatile.

So, what do you all think I should get? I assume that there's not one type that fits all but which is the most versatile for locomotive building?

Thread: Warco GH1236 won't run
05/12/2015 19:50:43
Thanks Bayzle and Andrew thats all it was. Just proving to you all that that I am a real newbie. I'll try not to suspect that there's something wrong in future.
Cheers.

My new lathe arrived. It will only run when I have the start button pressed. When I release the button it stops. The Warco faq says that it is due to the chuck guard and gear cover interlocks not closed but these are fine as the contactor energises when I operate the interlocks. Is there something silly that I'm overlooking?

Thread: Hi, I'm Paul

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.

Neil, that engine looks like a nice project, but I think I'll just play around with the machines first before I destroy the makings of a very nice looking engine.
I have ordered Harold's books as recommended as well as a copy of the 'Metalworkers Data Book'. I do remember having a copy of the Zeus Data Charts and Reference Tables which I purchased away back in 1978 and had up until very recently, but cannot for the life of me find it now .sad

And don't worry Chris, I will be asking loads of questions. But for now I'm like a 6 year old waiting for Santa to arrive with my toys (Lathe, Mill and now books).

I live in Republic of Ireland. I'm an electrician. The last time I used a lathe was in 1978 when I was a first year apprenice fitter (age 15). I loved working with the lathe and mill. I left after the first year to start again as an apprentice electrician. I always said I'd build a workshop and have a lathe, Mill etc for when I retire (which looks like it'll be at least another 8 years or .
However.... I've just ordered a new GH1236 lathe and a VMC milling machine from Warco and hope to have it in 3 weeks. I've been out in my nice warm empty workshop imagining the machines there.
No doubt you'll all be sick to death of me asking for advice as to using this equipment. Note that I have no real idea as to what I will use the machines for. Initially I'll just be playing around with them.
And on that vein, perhaps an idea or two as to what my first project should be?
Regards,
Paul
