Thread: I am getting shorter - how about you.
08/02/2022 17:27:46

I am down from 6 ft to sub 5 ft 10". Years of leaning over machinery and heavy lifting took it's toll but worst for me is the ravages of Parkinson's. Medication helps but I doubt I will stand upright again.

A lot of pre-war gearboxes and even late model Royal Enfields use semi liquid type "O" grease. This is also used in commercial vehicle chassis lubrication systems.

Would "Buffalo Board" suitably veneered work ? Used for trailer floors and I have yet to see any distort.

Thread: Computer help required

I might have got somewhere. after reading the above posts and Google I tried a shutdown.

Control + X then tap U U

The system shut down and today seems to be much better. Funny thing is I no longer get the power options when using the windows key so have been unable to shutdown before.

Thanks for all the replies. I will make copious notes before attempting a remedy.

Thanks Noel, lets hope someone can point us in the right direction. I would go back to windows 10 if I knew how.

A few weeks ago I "Upgraded "? from windows 10 to windows 11 via a prompt on the screen. It took over three days of restarts and problems and now the computer is very slow to start and takes many minutes to start or change pages.

I am a complete computer dummy with a slow connection but prior to this all was well and fast enough for me. Computer has 8gb ram and little is stored on it.

Thread: New workshop - Quart into a Pint Pot!

Your new workshop looks great, gives me inspiration for a downsizing move. Sadly the Bridgeport and 14"x40" lathe will have to go. Health is going downhill so best to sell soon and get set up with smaller kit.

I would find working on that motor scary and take it to a rewind place. My 3HP lathe needs a similar procedure but I could not find anyone willing to do it. It runs OK on a Transwave static inverter whereas the 2HP Bridgeport would only run for a few minutes on the Transwave before tripping out. Bridgeport now happy on a VFD fitted by a friend.

Hi Chris

Have you fitted a 400v 3 phase output VFD or are you running the motor at reduced voltage/power than the rating plate ?

Emgee

As far as I am aware the Bridgeport now runs 240 volt three phase from the VFD. Not found any lack of torque or power. I am just not confidant to mess with electrical items.

Welcome along Steven. Where in the world are you (county/state?) Have you any idea what size of machine you desire ? This is usually dictated by budget and space. Type of work etc.

Thread: Adcock Shipley 2s milling machine
25/01/2022 15:53:18

I operated a 2S around 1980 when the machine was brand new. Don't remember any clutch problems but the machine was sold on after about 18 months / 2 years totally worn out. We had many Adcock Shipley machines that gave good service but the 2S must have been a rogue.

Thread: Can you identify this?

It is a well made holder for a DTI. I have no idea re the spindle taper though.

Another vote for sidevalve BSA C10.

Second thoughts the girder fork side links don't look like BSA.

Chris

you don’t only have to fit solar panels to a roof, plenty of people have ground level installations. Dave W

Enough land/garden for normal domestic use but no surplus for panels. The house is a converted stable and a bit querky/unconventional.

22/01/2022 08:59:46

All this talk about solar panels can not apply to all houses, mine is a listed building and there is no way I would want anything installed on a 170 year old roof. Guess I will just have to dig deeper in the pockets to pay the bills. We are all able to restrict our usage with common sense.

Thread: Lathe change gears vs gearbox
20/01/2022 20:52:01

I got used to a Colchester Triumph 2000 at work for my motorcycle tinkering, great range on the gearbox suited me. On retirement I sold my old Southbend "Heavy Ten" And bought a 14" x 40" Exel lathe, a good machine but a real faff some days with the change gears. Sometimes cutting 20/24/26 TPI the change gears can be left alone and the gearbox used, throw in a few other pitches and metric it becomes tedious. I don't mind the actual changing over of gears but the faff to get them meshed quietly sometimes annoys me. So a gearbox gets my vote if it will cover the range you require.

Thread: Clamping set (metric or imperial)
18/01/2022 09:12:03

Most of the generic Bridgeport size clamping sets I have seen use 1/2"UNC rolled thread studs and suitable tee nuts. Mine takes a 22mm A/F spanner (7/8". I have a set with 12mm studs for the rotary table with the same hexagon size on the nuts. I always thought about altering all the hexagon sizes to 3/4" (19mm) A/F the same as the draw bar but never got round to it and just live with two spanners on the table. Enjoy the machine, they are a joy to use.

From what I can see in your unloading picture it is a "Varidrive" machine. I have one of these running from a VFD at 230/240 Volts.

I'm new to all this so I may be misinterpreting you but I have a j head model and need to change speeds via a belt change

Sorry Colin, a quick look at the picture does indeed show a J head.

When my Varidrive machine was configured to run on a VFD the person that did it for me removed the knob for reversing and now that is done on the VFD.
