Thread: Adjustable Angle Plate or Tilting Vice |
30/04/2018 12:19:25 |
Looking at the replies I have come to the conclusion that I don't need to buy a tilting vice or an adjustable angle plate. A extra angle plate and precision vice will do for me, also leaving my machine vice as it is on the milling table will save me time resetting it up. A bit of lateral thinking for me is what is needed, again thanks. Bob.

Thanks for these replies, just back from holiday so have just read these posts. Bricky idea of the redundant pillar drill is of interest as I have one under the bench in bits, I shall check it out tomorrow. Also Steamdaves plate looks good, seems simple to make, quite like this as well. Bob. |

What is the best option a tilting vice,or a adjustable angle plate. The tilting vices at around £60 don't look that good, but the same money will buy a 6 inch angle plate. I already have a spare small machine vice, but I don't know what to go for. The adjustable angle plate are they any good at around £100, or do you have to dismantle them to get them right. Thanks for any replies Bob. |
Thread: Compressor Oil |
19/04/2018 21:06:01 |
, My wife's car, a Corsa 2009 uses 5w-30, and states on a service 20.000 miles per oil change. If its good enough for that after 120.000 miles then with replies on oil I shall bung 5w-30 in . Again thanks for replies, Bob. Edited By BOB BLACKSHAW on 19/04/2018 21:06:56 |

Thanks George, that's another site to look at when on nights. |

Very much appreciated Bill. I was twelve at the time, and I remember my father not around at Christmas. With the pilot looking like a lump of cork, obviously my father at the time was not pulling my leg. And another good site to visit when on the night shift [part time]. Bob |

I have just had a general look at the posts as I'm on the night shift and have nothing else better to do. As aircraft accidents appear on recent posts, I tried to find a accident on the internet that happened around 1967 at Christmas time, but cant find any record of it. The crash site was Vauxhall motors Luton, a small jet took of from Luton airport, and Vauxhalls is at the end of the runway. I remember my father getting a phone call to come in as he was on maintenance, and was needed for cutting the structure of the building away from the aircraft. I remember him telling me that the pilot was badly burnt and looked like a lump of cork. As I've said, reading this discussion I have tried to get some information on the internet about this accident, but nothing about it at all. Bob |
Thread: Rotary Table |
03/04/2018 02:03:34 |
Thanks for these replies they have been very informative. The reply from Dave Halford about cutting curves on the Rotary Table can be a problem with the worm gear, if not up to it. I have been given a 4 inch table some time ago unused which was purchased in the mid eighties. It is a import and will cut a curve in steel as I used this to recess a flywheel. I like the idea of a Rotary Table with plates, the ones I've seen advertised by Warco seem quite a good price, but are they any good, can they cut curves in steel with out stripping the worm gear ? Fed up with buying crap, stuff not fit for purpose until modified. The reply from Richard suggests that I don't need another table, just use a calculator. But would still like one with plates, any recommendations please. Thanks Bob

I have seen a Rotary Table with dividing plates at a good price, what are the advantages of a Dividing Head over the Rotary Table. I know that a chuck can be fitted to the Rotary Table, it seems to me they do the same job. |
Thread: Compound Table |
30/03/2018 17:18:58 |
I am looking for a small compound table for my bench drill, which has a throat off 130mm. The only ones I have seen which look ok are cast iron but will be to big for the drill, other aluminium types don't in my opinion look that good. Any ideas of a table that would be ok for small drill. |
Thread: Tangs not on centres |
25/03/2018 17:15:16 |
I'm fitting a DRO on my lathe tailstock, with my lathe the all my centers when fitted will foul up when on my clamp DRO fixing when I take them out. All drill chucks and M2, M3 reducers have a tang on the end and are ok when I take them out. My question is why are tangs not fitted to centers, I can understand if no tangs are fitted to drill chucks as it will give around 15mm more on the tailstock, but why not centers. Thread: Correcting an off bored cylinder |
23/03/2018 04:13:06 |
A better way would be to mount the cylinder on a angle plate, then a boring bar between two centers using a lathe dog would be more accurate. |
23/03/2018 01:32:43 |
I would now get a flat surface on the valve side so its square to the two ends. I would then mount it on the cross slide, pack and clock the existing hole for parallel and mount a adjustable boring tool in the chuck. But thats my opinion I will be interested how others would do this. Edited By BOB BLACKSHAW on 23/03/2018 01:36:50 |

The flywheel is from RDG Tools in the UK. As for fourteen engines was off sick from work for nine months so the shed occupied my time, without it I would of been really fed up. I'm actually in the UK on the night shift, if you need the drawings I've used send me a message and I will e-mail them to you. |

Question on Loctite. If the shafts are to be a tight fit then how will the Loctite be applied as it will be pushed out when fitting the shaft. Picture of the second one, I hope to get this one running as well as the first. |
