Thread: Is any old copper pipe the 'same'.

Thanks all particularly info about working pressure limits. As pointed out i'm well within the capacity of its capability. I'm in Brisbane Qld and unlike the uk sourcing any specialist materials here is not as easy as in the UK where you have large demand for anything. We have two suppliers of nonferrous metals and they have limited ranges and want to sell commercial quantities. Then we have our model suppliers who have the range we want but are not always in stock. Trick is to have several jobs on the go whilst waiting but its frustrating at times.

I fear in sourcing some copper 1/4" pipe / tube locally I have possibly been supplied that which refrigeration engineers use. Is this likely to be a problem for my 71/4" model steam loco "plumbing".

I have also heard people refer to hard / cold extrusion copper tube what is this ?

Thread: P V Baker build

Hi

I bought a lovely 3 1/2 " tank engine at a sale and found upon research that it is a P V Baker. It's in need of an overhaul and a new boiler cert so I bought plans which are helpful but I am now wondering if a build article was ever published in Model Engineer and if so how i go about getting a copy.

Hm lost a reply

I had said guess what in desperation I emailed EMCO and asked for the original drawings of the spindle and they sent them straight back !

It is a ACME thread , the drawing spec says 15mm dia16 tpi links geraullt 6g

Then it has a note "Die Steigung darf gemessen innerhalb einer beliebigen Anzahl von Gangen , jedoch max auf 12" Lange nicht mehr als 0.0012"vom solmass abweichen" German anyone ?

Thanks Neil I have emailed Roton - good find.

Sorry haven't answered your full question.

It's an Imperial machine and it's the vertical screw for lifting the milling head p/n E3B 000 130 and it's nut. All of which seems to be L/H thread. The steel used seems to have been quite soft so if I do have a new one made it will be of harder material.

Maybe there's a market for making spare parts for the FB2 or at least buying up used ones and making the parts available. It's a nice little machine and it only cost me $600 so I can afford to spend a little bit on it.

Thanks Jason I have and they reiterated what I heard from EMCO's agent here in Australia that the FB2 isn't supported anymore so looks like I'm on my own - not quite thanks to all the help available from sites like these. So this morning I took the part to ACA Engineering, Geebung, Qld 4034 and Phil Fisher there said we'll do what we can to fix it up, $50. Probably $500 to make a new one. We decided its not an Acme thread but a square one.

06/07/2016 11:14:48

Can any one help me with a potential supplier now that this part is discontinued by Emco.

If not does anyone know the spec of this thread so that I can get it made.

It looks like a Acme thread has about 16 tpi max dia .591" and might be LH

Thread: Just getting started in Brisbane Qld.

Hi

As the title says I am just getting my self set up and mistakes are taking place as people said they would but I am making progress. Just getting permission to set up the workshop was a challenge but thats done and i now have the where with all to make something.

However it seems there is a mystery around what metals to use for what components. Should it be stainless steel for connecting rods or mild steel (what type) ? what about cylinders cast iron or brass ? Steel sheet (what type) or Brass for bodywork ? and if its either or then what are the considerations?

There are amazing books with every performance characteristic in tables which frankly are beyond me. Especially when they finally point out that not every supplier uses the same description then they don't always know exactly what type of steel it is they have in stock and don't get me started on where that steel comes from. So just looking for some straight forward simple can't go wrong advice.
