I took out an annual print only sub to MEW in Jan 2022 - I have just received a subscription note that I have only one issue left after the current #315 (May issue) - #316 is I assume the last issue to be produced by mytimemedia staff given the long lead time from preparation to print.

you probably know that Sodor is part of the Diocese name "Sodor and Man" ie that of the Isle of Man - Sodor being a shortened form of the Latin Sodorensis ie of the South Isles that is south of Norway! dating from the 12th Century when the diocese came under Trondheim - but more relevant we have our own narrow gauge railway still steam operated. see www.manxnotebook.com/transprt/railways/index.htm

you don't own the software on your machine - the licence allowing it gives M/S permission to do everything including allow/disallow programs to run.

my suggestion comprises just a small file named eg my.html which contains maybe a dozen lines of code - catch is you can't easily give html code on this site
= you can set your browsers home page (in preferences) to this file - such simple HTML code is or was given in simple introductions to designing websites before every one was started to use some commercial page writing system. But setting about:blank as home page and then using favourites works almost as well ust 2 clicks rather than 1

in the 1980s I wrote the software to control individual lights (fluorescent tubes) in open plan office by users at desks under such lights - originally seen as just something to avoid complaints with energy saving a small bonus - in fact I was told it paid for itself with a couple of years as it the energy saved was not just the lights but office air conditioning which was pushing the electricity usage into the penal price range designed to avoid overloading the supply - hadn't occurred to the company occupying the office as provision of lighting etc was the landlords concern - software allowed for major reorganisation of office space over a single night - luckily as developer my graveyard shifts were just for standby during initial commissioning in case of unforeseen funnies.

I see the security certificate has changed and triggered my browser - I understood one of the problems in getting rid of the damn'd smilies was they were essential for other sites - I guess now they can be got rid of,

can you screw from underneath ? or is the intention to turn it over when you have badly scored one side.
If 16mm backed MDF flexes then you need to apply less pressure or strengthen the base - sounds as tho you are trying to work on a folding card table.

the smart phones rely on just two operating systems giving a toxic duopoly in which one supplier makes a great profit from surveillance so as to target customers whilst the other exploits its duopoly to make very large profits by forcing updates etc.

I have one of those LED fittings in my kitchen in IoM and also in UK - been in service now for near 10 years in both places - mine were made by JCC and bought off Rexal (I think this is current name was I think Rex when I dealt with them).

Vic - as most ceilings are painted white as is the enclosure box it is fairly innocuous against the ceiling especially if rather high as in my flat - this being a long room I have two - one near middle and the other set over the table in the bow window; but tastes obviously vary - the light is uniform and shadowless.

can be fixed with small metal brackets (after all we are supposed to be engineers) but this requires the drivers to be remote or as stated "a 50mm deep box-surround " which allows the driver to sit on top of the panel and doesn't need any change to the wiring - a dimmer will be essential for domestic use.

The panels are the standard panels used in open plan offices and available from many suppliers - look for your nearest Electrical suppliers eg TLC, City Electrical or Rexal - those on the IoM were made by JCC, those in UK from TLC but most now seem to offer the fitting.
Basically there is enough area in the metal rim and back of the light panel to act as a heat sink.
The base in the LED bulbs is too small and the fitting generally too constrained to allow good heat dissipation.

if you can accept 30W 600mmx600mm panels these + the driver can be fixed to a flat ceiling with a 50mm deep box-surround - these give considerably more light than a 150W old style light bulb - they also last for considerably longer - one in my front room here in IoM has run so far over 10 years (that in my UK house just a miserable 4 years - but you need warm colour as cool white which works well in my workshop cellar will be too unpleasant.

truly rural areas probably only got mains electricity post WW2, phones would be too expensive for most even if there were sufficient cables, phone boxes were the usual - telephones were in very short supply until quite late in the 1960s (I remember we had to be content with a party line for many years)

if your home still has fuses then I would strongly recommend that you upgrade a probably 40+ year old system to a more modern box with residual current based safety devices

ring mains being 2 x 2.5mm^2 cabled are generally protected these days with a 32A RCB - the 13A fuse is only there to protect the cable from the socket to the device (only the UK has such a scheme - its utility has often been questioned)

it depends very much on what you think you will build after the 1st model you suggest above - personally I find the small mill gets somewhat more use than my larger lathe but neither can replace the other for most jobs - also if you intend to use bar stock I soon found a metal bandsaw a total necessity.

my version of the Taig does not have a lead screw just a rack to move the cross slide - though the lathe is light the usual motor adds considerably to weight tho I guess a modern industrial sewing machine motor might be better. The Cowell lathes are IMO more capable - there is a mill version of the Taig but doubt if it is as versatile as the Sieg SX-1 tho this is larger but may just about be moved by an individual but would also provide accurate drilling for other tasks.

my email address has been on the web for over 20years - I soon afterwards moved to 'hiding' it as a jpg but that made little difference to spam due to harvested emails - I moved to a commercial spam filter some years later which removed the bulk but over the last couple of years have seen very little spam - I suspect not being on Farce book is a key reason for this - the only consistent source appears to be China gleaned I suspect from a local shop who supplied a small replacement display from a chinese supplier.
