back in the days of core memory the 'innocuous' machine instruction jmp * (ie continually execute a transfer of control to the same instruction would guarantee the core memory to issue a puff of smoke as a single row of memory overheated |

Buck converter - possibly from a 1.25v cell to the 3V needed to drive the LED or possibly 12v down.
unlikely the inductor has failed - more likely the actual converter chip Edited By Frances IoM on 18/05/2023 21:18:08 |

Microsoft has two almost totally distinct markets - 1: the general public and 2: Industry They are very different in their needs and market - the former buy an O/S as a bundle with their computer and generally are loath to buy support - hence MS business plan is software as a service + selling the marketing info re customers; industry looks to a fully supported product, want specialised networking etc and wants stability so that training costs for local support can be borne over a number of years. This second market can be highly profitable but part of it is built on a widespread acceptance of a single O/S + specialised software such as CAD. Edited By Frances IoM on 15/05/2023 17:18:51 |

Thread: Possible use of ALDI car battery charger as a bench power supply |
03/05/2023 20:57:48 |
As several have pointed out the PSU rescued from defunct desktop PCs can provide very usable power usually between 400 and 800W with good regulation at 3.3V, 5V and 12V you can also buy quite cheaply larger PSUs designed for servers usually supplying between 40-150A at 12V - catch is they can't easily be altered as jacking it up to 13.4 would make an ideal charger for lead acid batteries. |

the simplest way of checking if a randomly chosen email address is active is to embed a fetch of some 1 pixel image in the html coded message (rather like facebook does for users of this page) - this only works because most user don't think of the costs of allowing html code to be interpreted by their mail program |

there used to be a question often given to those programmers who made too many assumptions about the users forced to use their software 'have you tried to eat your own dog food ?' (bowlderised to meet today's woke snowflakes). |
Thread: Small table saw |
20/04/2023 19:55:36 |
I certainly wouldn't want to use one of the Evolution Rage type saws with hand fed metal, wouldn't even fancy using it in the workshop - it throws red hot bits of metal around at high speed - personally a bandsaw is much more workshop friendly - an angle grinder in a fixed stand and metal held in a vice with a 1mm metal cutting blade is just about tolerable with a metal splash guard to catch the molten metal 'sparks' - it cuts stainless steel rod better than the bandsaw. the power supply used to be a separate board - this could possibly be enclosed in a small box and supply one of the small micro processors. The hard drive can be reused but these days SSDs are considerly faster and lower power |

it costs money + a regular update - the security is mostly there for the users of public wifi especially since mobile phones started to be the norm for accessing personal bank accounts. The origin of the https protocol come from Google when certain ISPs, including BT, started to add extra javascript to their hosted web pages to display adverts for which of course Google got no revenue. Some local ISPs even started to replace Google generated adds with their own but of course public wifi is inherently open to others to access and even imitate. If you are using a landline thru a reputable ISP the safety of the connection is unlikely to be compromised unless your router has been compromised.
I have a site that has been online for over 25 years, ie well before https started but it has no commercial activity. Edited By Frances IoM on 04/04/2023 11:41:46 |
Thread: Can I get an MT1 extension with a through hole? |
01/04/2023 19:42:58 |
Thanks Jason - yes a backplate mounted ER collet was my first thought and I would have expected the OP to have such a device but given he wants to straddle the gap I assume he has a face plate which normally allows a centre hole large enough to allow a MT collect to pass thru - putting a bar in this and passing the bar thru a backplate mounted ER Collet as eg sold by ARCEuro which will come with mounting holes allows the holes to be located on the faceplate and drilled(or located in the usual slots) + tightened in situ without having to make a special backplate - should be considerably more rigid than two MT1 devices in series. |

could you not use an ER chuck (eg ER25) on a faceplate which should extend some way over a gap ? |

can you read the files produced by 221 ? backwards compatibility (at least for recent versions) should be the norm but forward incompatibility is the usual cost of 'progress'. |
