Thread: Why has my mild steel bent |
03/08/2023 17:33:11 |
hot rolled steel ? often will move if cuts unbalance the built in stresses - if you can't take balanced cuts then I've seen suggestions to anneal the block and cool slowly might reduce the effect. |

Thread: Evolution TCT blade |

should have added - my local metal merchant seems to sell quite a lot of stainless - these are cut with a slow speed circular saw with cooling liquid - I presume to avoid local work hardening |
31/07/2023 17:45:15 |
we've been here before - the evolution chop saw will cut mild steel certainly upto 15mm but after finishing the job I'd bought it for I put it away and bought a bandsaw - the chop saw is not suitable unless in a large workshop as it throws red hot bits a long distance - also the blades are not it appears suitable for stainless steel (though neither is my bandsaw - I cut these with a small angle grinder with 1mm cutting disks) |
Thread: Damaged Screws & QCTP help!!! |

thread gauges are cheap - try toolstation or screwfix - unless you are truly in the sticks there should be branch within reach.
it might be as well to also buy a can of plus-gas as this can make life easier when trying to remove stuck screws Edited By Frances IoM on 29/07/2023 15:26:00 |

because it prevents bulk mailings of the form Dear Sir or similar - one obvious technique that used to be useful was to invent a second initial as a middle name using a different letter for each major login so that was easy to track where unwanted email had come from |

Thread: Nineteen year old magazine |
15/07/2023 11:14:01 |
The cost of warehousing these 20 year old publications can't have been insignificant - tho the Col Stephen's publication dated 2020 (which I also received) would, being an excellent account, probably have sold a few issues each year (especially if presented at the Kent + East Sussex site) but surely the 20 year old 'Heritage Railway' magazine had little residual value post publication.
Strangely there is a link between the two freebies - the Heritage Railway mentions the finding the the double Fairlie boilers mentioned in Col Stephens story.

Thread: Workshop Clock |
05/07/2023 18:53:27 |
the radio-controlled clocks have a directional antenna (a ferrite rod) - try a wall at 90deg to the one on which it fails - I have several such clocks both in IoM where they work on any wall and in SE England where they are distinctively directional |
Thread: recycled Henrys |
01/07/2023 17:24:19 |
seen on a recent walk on the Isle of Man down a very small back road and a little futher round the back of the house is a dump which includes 20 or more defunct Henrys & Henriettas! as well as much other 'too good to throw' items. |

I had great difficulty some years ago finding a suitable application that would act as a local web server (eg equivalent to Apache on my Linux boxes) on an early version of Android as I wanted to host a copy of my quite large web site offline for demo purposes- tho I finally got it partly working it was a right hassle, Android seems to be intended solely as a device to push externally hosted web pages to the user.
ETA - it can't be processor power as the Pi 3 & 4 make an excellent job of doing just that; which are certainly less powerful than many of the later chips supporting Android 8 - it's a deliberate decision to cripple Android for this function Edited By Frances IoM on 22/06/2023 16:11:36 |
Thread: Email woes |
22/06/2023 09:33:57 |
Google's interest in personal email is based on same approach as that other pernicious data miner Farcebook - finding connected groups of individuals usually indicates a shared interest and thus can be targeted with common adverts. (ask yourself why this site carries trackers for both) |
Thread: Google's Graffitti on 'lathes.co' |
16/06/2023 08:00:05 |
Drowning a previously popular site in adverts was in the past an indication that the owner of the site had changed, had no future plans for the site but wanted to extract the most money in the short term. Is Tony still in charge - I recall my only involvement with him some years ago and had the impression I was dealing with an old man in that I received completely the wrong documentation, but seemed to have been charged for what I wanted, raised the point but got no sensible reply - in the end gave up as wasn't worth chasing the small sum. |

assuming you have the common arrangement of two sets of blades sandwiched between two plates - then these plates usually have whit or metric or both stamped on them - on those under the whit heading they are marked in tpi turns per inch and under the metric the thread in mm - should be fairly obvious 'g' is used on german or european origin for tpi - there are funnies available eg BA threads but 99.9% are combi Whit + metric |
Thread: Dremel type bits |

one common approach is to place a redhot bit on the top of the screw - the sudden heat can break the rust or corrosion - for large heads you may be able to freeze the head using the specialised (+ expensive) sprays. |

the screws from the old wall sockets in my house installed early 1980s or prior were definitely 3BA. As were the small countersunk screws holding the faceplate to the body of the Yale lock Edited By Frances IoM on 10/06/2023 11:22:53 |
Thread: Behaviour of Banks |
03/06/2023 13:35:30 |
S.O.D. given that every credit/debit card transaction is scanned for reasonableness then a small effectively non-profit group with small regular sums coming in and out should be easy to police - yet they cannot even police 100s of thousand pounds cash purchases passing thru a small jewellers. |

sounds like Nat West - their IoM subsidiary took over 2 years + a form 35 pages long to change 2 signatories so that our management company (5 flats - all owners are directors) could gain access to our bank account of some 30years standing following the death + move to a retirement home of two of our directors. |
Thread: Scary stuff … |

as I've pointed out for years now this site also embeds a facebook tracker tho I guess an interest in engineering has not yet been declared a medical problem. |
