looks an ideal task to make use of 'parametric instantiation' - (see a prev thread complaining such a term had no place in Model Engineering) followed by CNC machining |

it's interesting that we recommend that a new user get some training in using machine tools yet happily trust our savings (assuming you use eBanking) to the software suppliers to protect us from malfunctions due to errors in design of such software. In practice these suppliers have done well enough, assuming we update systems, to provide generally adequate protection.
For those who have done no reading whatsoever re the tool they make heavy use of HTML is the code that organises the displayed text etc - most web pages make use of Javascript which is a programming language that provides the many fancy features - this programming language is fully capable of any task though modern browsers severely restrict its capabilities outside of a range of activities that should not cause problems for users (eg unwanted access of personal data) - email using HTML and Javascript merely to provide fancy fonts etc opens the door to certain malware - eg in the past with certain older routers that did not have their default password changed, a rogue bit of Javascript could switch your internet stream to malicious destinations. do people seriously allow html and javascript to be interpreted by a browser in the emails - if so they deserve all they get. |

my local stockist (some 15miles away) was happy for collected orders over ?100 cash - usually any long lengths (eg complete 3m lengths) would be chopped but obviously not cut to specific size to fit in my small smart car. |
Thread: What is your favourite "unusual tool that you find useful" ? |
06/06/2021 12:00:56 |
I once bought at auction a bag of tools - part unseen - once bought and opened I found I had maybe 20 leatherman or lookalike tools (mostly the latter) - suspect the bag like many of the bags of cosmetics that preceded it in the sale (which went for considerably more than my tools) originated from one of the Heathrow terminals and were probably confiscated items. |
Thread: SQUIRM ALERT! SQUIRM ALERT! |

I bought the complete kit (unused) at a local auction about 3 years ago - comes in a stainless steel box - the forceps are useful for many purposes other than that for which they were sold. Edited By Frances IoM on 28/05/2021 15:04:34 |

Martin - I trust the cutters were properly sharpened - would certainly enforce a 'do not touch' edict |

The Beeb gets around it by claiming its mandate is to broadcast to the UK (ie the licence payers) outside of the UK it can offer programs & services paid for by adverts (this has been true for several years with its Internet offerings aimed at the USA). Many years ago when I wrote software for pay I often asked developers of tools I needed to use if they had tried eating their own dog food (not always as polite as this tho) |
Thread: 10TB HDD |

buy 5 and operate in a RAID configuration. I have a 10year old disk copier the speed of the microprocessor driving it is certainly a limitation - 2TB rotating rust drives take about 12hrs to copy thus would probably take about 2 days. Just copied a 120G SSD to another 120G SSD which took abt 20min |
Thread: Failed to get this digital clock kit working :( |

I'm assuming that one possible error is the loading of the display on the uP - the uP should go through its program without the display and the multiplexing pins should be low enough frequency for Audacity to display it. I assume that the uP is a one-time programmable chip (maybe SOD in possession of a data sheet could confirm) - many of these have a mechanism to prevent readout of the program |
Thread: T Handle Allen Key Sets |
08/05/2021 18:50:23 |
the only allen key that is used most of the time is the 6mm for the tool post - just buy a couple of these and paint in fluorescent colours (mine are lime green) because unless you are one of the 10% who always replace a tool in its recognised place you will need to pick it out among the swarf. One of the things I have meant to do for a long time is to replace the cap heads, which gather swarf, with square head screws |
Thread: Failed to get this digital clock kit working :( |

with the uP removed jumpering a 1k resistor from vc1 to one of the display pins and jumpering one of the multiplex pins to 0V should light up something on the display which, maybe wrongly, I assume is soldered in position and oriented correctly ? I this fails then remove the display, insert the up and if you can run a program like audacity (or even better one of the programs on a Raspberry Pi - surely everybody has one of these by now) you should be able to check out the uP Edited By Frances IoM on 08/05/2021 18:35:39 |

It was an assumption as you didn't comment on it - thus I now assume that as you have checked out that all connections are correct and the display works then what remains is the micro processor (or possibly the Xtal oscillator) - without a scope this is difficult - however if you have an audio jack then there are pseudo-scope programs (eg Audacity) that can display the signal on this jack - they should be fast enough to at least check the display multiplexing. that is pure politics - short termism in the city and dislike of unionised labour. Let's see what happens to the levelling up in the old industrial areas. |

I guess you didn't use a socket for the microprocessor thus depriving you of many simple tests on the wiring and the display. If you did then you can obvious check all the connections and by judicious use of jumpers test out the display |

the HSTs have already been broken up - some will have a 2nd life in smaller sets some in GWR as the Castle sets and others in Scotland. They were very comfortable especially in 1st class |
08/05/2021 12:12:36 |
go read about the seating on Thameslink that was specified by the DfT. Ok they didn't design the trains but specified the seating etc (ie what the passenger judges the comfort on) on the new hi speed trains Increased pollution from cars has been commented on by many including one coroner - air pollution in some parts of London exceeds legal limits by a large margin |

it required a collision with a large meteorite to wipe them out ( + most of rest of life) so they were pretty well adapted to their world |

they replaced comfortable trains on both the east coast & the GWR with what have been reckoned to be the most uncomfortable long distance trains ever built - specified it seems by the 'experts' in DfT (their last 'masterpiece' was the Thameslink trains) - maybe once the Gov has recovered from Covid they might get around to publishing the long awaited Williams report and appoint the arms-length guiding mind that is so required to recover from the failed franchise model and the utter stupidity of the 'do not use public transport' messages - which will probably kill more people from air pollution than use of trains would have from covid. Noel - look forward to circuit details - always meant to build one based on Maurice's very simple model but like so much else never seemed to get around to it. |
