If you want to just get going the least expensive - $10 break out board, couple stepper drives and a computer with a parallel port would get you cutting.

You could also make really nice threads with a 25 to 100 line encoder + index. (parallel port would handle that too)

sam

With what software and what OS Sam? I also believe the steppers on the unimat pc cnc are uni-polar connection only - drivers for such are not as common as bi-polar stuff.

Joe

stepper motors which have plugs on them with yellow brown white and green wires going into them...

That sounds like bipolar to me... 4 wire?

I have never heard of this.. (I have a compact 5 pc - which uses the printer port..) I have a config that works with the stock compact 5 pc (plug and play) with linuxcnc.

Looks like a cool little machine. Have to know a little more about it! Did you get any of the electronics?

This was what I was machining.. I want to machine/thread the back side of these so they will spin onto the nose of the turco.. Then I will have a few er20 holders that I can have a few tools setup for machining.

CSS and FPR

FPR and G70/70 turning cycles. - also CSS but the spindle wasn't running fast enough for the FPM...

more goofing around...

another painful update

14/03/2021 03:13:19

face plate mounted... Need to drill and tap a bunch of holes.. Getting there...

11/03/2021 23:26:33

roughed out the back of the face plate....

I plan on using at a lightweight 4th axis.. For either the turco or my 440 sized machine.

and another update...

20/02/2021 04:40:40

started an actual 4th axis........

Thought this would be a neat experiment to see if a minimally printed harmonic drive would work (for some definition of..) Just printing the flex and outside gear.

some more

I cannot find those style collets... I ended up buying a mt1 to er16 and modifying it to take the nut. I will probably make more when I get the chance.

BTW - David - what kind of encoder is on the orac?

It has a slotted disc with 48 holes and an index, which seems to work fine.

David.

That is an awesome count for printer port reading. The emco compact 5 pc's have 100 holes + index and they work great over the printer port.

Fun little machine.

The main reason why there is only a pi4 version is it is the first pi that can really handle it... (main thing is that the ethernet controller is not connected though the usb bus anymore. This allows for actual realtime ethernet attached devices. (like the mesa 7i92 or such)
