Your needs depend on the gauge of the steel you want to weld so max and min Amps are important.

To weld both car gauge and say 3mm + thick angle iron you need a MIG welder that goes from 20A up to 170A single phase.

To stay in your price bracket that'll be a big ol'e 2nd hand unit. I paid £200 for mine off the bay much better than the hobby Cebora 130A I used to have, only needed a lead re making as the monkey had not bothered to tighten it on the earth clamp.

Gasless sounds great but is in fact a waste of time and you're back to chipping slag.

People seem to forget to change / clean the torch tube or use old rusty wire then think the wire feed is toast and sell it cheap.

I began my Minnie boiler in back in the 80's using the book of words. Not wanting to use coke as insulation I thought I'd be clever and get some fire bricks. Being a child of the 50's, fire bricks to me are heavy grey hard things that protect the side of the hearth from too much damaging heat from a coal fire. I can confirm they are medium rubbish at insulation when compared to a bit of Rockwool. They are not made of vermiculite and you can get them to glow eventually, but it takes ages.

I have some old 1935 C section steel used for telecoms racking some parts cut / drill well and some spots are hard.

So mixed scrap in steel is nothing new.

I remember old 60's/70's jap cars rusting rather badly.

Rotagrip in B'ham do a decent cheap vice 75 x 75. At least mine was.

Remember electronic speed controllers reduce the torque as they reduce the speed. Belt systems increase torque.

Some of the control boards were/are known to blow if overloaded or if they get damp. Belts just slip.

Yes you can return if faulty , but not if you miss-treated it, and then that's two more times you need to be at home + the delivery may just be to the curb side not to where you want to use it.

Some lathes can swing 7" diameter, but you can't get a tool to cut the outside edges just the face.

Any thing with Myford written on attracts a premium price, but then you can get it back one day.

New stuff is like new cars they just get much cheaper 2nd hand.

As to spark damage, never ever point the spray of sparks at any glass, they will melt in even if not still glowing.

The manual !! ( the set up doc mentioned above) you buy are the same as on the yahoo group for free.

It will not tell you how to dismantle it, just how to set up your shiny, new from the factory machine. Bit like your glovebox handbook that comes with a car, useless for changing the thermostat.

Mikes connector suggestion is just what you get in better gas/nogas welders. Just make sure you do them up tight else they spark & burn.

If you get one of these to start with consider how HMRC got your email address.

HMRC will write to you using paper and ink and if they owe you money just ignore the letter and they will send you a cheque, which you pay in to your account. No electronics, no risk.

There's always a hot air gun, the Titan one from screwfix is cheap and quite good just remove any plastic

The wheel is coated with diamond not embedded etc use light pressure & it'll be fine. Ram the drill in and it'll overheat and shed the diamond coating.

When someone say 30 weight oil they are referring to sae30 the W should only be used for multigrade oils.

You can easily tell any gear oil - it stinks

be OK for light use or drilling sheet metal if you need holes at 90deg go very light pressure
