Thread: Air compressers for steam engines
31/05/2018 20:20:30
Posted by BOB BLACKSHAW on 31/05/2018 20:04:23:

I thought Brian needed advice on quiet way to run his engine, these posts are deviating from his question. I to would like some good suggestions, the steam cleaner which I have in the shed and never used, will now be tried out.

Bob.

Well, Brian's post was from seven years ago, and he hasn't posted since, so you can expect some mission creep in that time!

Thread: Source of good HSS lathe tool blanks
30/05/2018 13:31:22

All of my HSS blanks, and I have a few, are bought as NOS job lots off eBay.

I only buy stuff from quality manufacturers.

I have accumulated lots of old stuff, many names such as Firth Brown, Deloro, Jessop Saville, Osborn, Cleveland Momax, Eclipse, some are long gone.

Thread: Myford Super 7

Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 29/05/2018 10:35:59:

From a dealer, fitted with all the gizmos, £ 4,495 today.

I have bought from him in the past, that seller is about the most expensive out there, and machines are stripped to the bare minimum of accessories.

The Myford 254S he is currently advertising didn't sell with the previous owner on eBay after a couple of listings a few weeks back, he now has it up for £5,950 (!), which is £2,400 more than it was on eBay, and now stripped of its 4 jaw chuck, travelling steady, and other bits.

Thread: Arc welder cooling oil.

Is there a problem with 'old transformer oil' ?

Just a bit.

Like if you do not know what it is.

IF it is PCB ( how will you know ?) then truly you will not be doing mankind a favour by throwing it on the ground.

One day it will reach the water table and the results can be dire.

Equally, if you don't wear protective gear ,breathing it, or getting it on your skin is not good news.

Just look up Seveso for what it can do.

Having had a lifetime working in commercial liability insurance, with a lot of US toxic waste dumps and 1,317 of the nastiest dumps on the Superfund list involved; whilst I am not condoning spilling the contents of a welder, it is small beer compared to all the other polluting issues that the 7.6 billion of us on the planet are collectively creating!

Even on an oil-free type?

Oil free means no oil in the air delivery, not no oil in the pump.

Not so, it often means oil free, diaphragm pumps don't have a sump with oil in, all the rotation is dealt with by sealed bearings and there is no piston, they're far noisier than conventional compressors and have a far shorter service life

Ah, I didn't know that!

Too late - an Asian hornet was found in Lancashire about a month ago, and a nest destroyed in Devon last year.

Two days ago went into the shed and was surprised to see a blooming great hornet sitting on the window blind. He looked as if he was of the 'if he says it's Tuesday, it's Tuesday" variety. So I was all kind and considerate, captured him, took him outside and let him fly off.

Today I went in the shed and he's back in there, looking all mean and stroppy. Well, it might be a him, it might be a her, it might be him or it might be one of his mates. Whatever way, I was none to thrilled at the thought hornets might be considering my shed to be a good place to hang out in, so this time he came to an untimely end. I hear they eat bees so was OK doing that - I like bees.

Just hope there's not a hornets nest nearby; hornets I can do without.

Chris

Edited By ChrisH on 20/05/2018 21:30:51

Are you sure it wasn't a queen wasp looking for somewhere to start a nest? - in a shed it is more likely to be a queen wasp than a hornet, which tend to nest in hollow trees.

Thread: Warco WM250 Lathe and Warco WM18 Milling machine (Advice please)

Bazyle you missed the point of my post. Of course its not an ideal job however and i quote from Warcos website

  • Every milling machine we supply is fully checked and tested by a member of our qualified team, and is supplied with an individual accuracy test report.

This is blatantly untrue and should be removed from their literature.

All down to how you interpret what that means.

Really depends on who's in the team and what qualification they have, could just as well be one of the factory inspectors or a bloke in Warco's warehouse.

Likewise all the machines are supplied with a test cert as this mill is question was, nothing in Warco's statement to say where the test certificate originates from or how trueful it may be

Absolutely - there is a comma in there, which splits it into two statements, which may have been made relating to events many thousands of miles apart.

It might be a bit of a grand claim, but then it wouldn't be the first!

I have read most of this thread with interest having a warco lathe and toolco mill. I agree with most of the views expressed by the original poster i.e. he has a right to a machine that is totally in specification. What i don't agree with is the claims made by suppliers that that skilled engineers test each machine and fill in a test sheet that shows the results when in fact the tests are "switch on and check it runs".

As I understand it with Warco (and possibly other suppliers) the test sheet is filled out at the factory in the Far East, not in the UK.

Testing in the UK is confined to seeing if it runs.
