Thread: Registering with various Merchant's sites |
11/05/2015 13:36:35 |
Hi everyone, I dropped in today at a well known supplier of tools for the Hobbyists engineer. Firstly: I got an abrupt notice telling me about ads and cookies which help the Site pay their bills (This is true of most if not all sites now). This implies that I'm responsible for them making a loss? Yet here I am trying to spend my meager amount of cash at a site that wants me to Cow Tow to it's wishes. I run Ubuntu and whilst I use it I haven't had any influence as to how it works ie It seems to stop a lot of ads flooding my computer and for that I am grateful. There's no ad blocker in use by me. The reason I believe that ads remain unseen are due to mainly because ads are aimed at MS. Oh yes I well remember running AD AWARE at the end of every session on line. One of the reasons I dropped MS among many other reasons. Next comes the REGISTRY! Why do I want to register with every supplier that I use on the net? I don't is the answer but the supplier wants me to so they can send emails about the products they are pushing one supposes. But now I can't even buy their wares unless I do REGISTER! Please explain the logic me no comprendo. |

Ian... The post on stress relieving was aimed at the guy having trouble machining his gibs. I would have thought that Ultra Sonic Stress Relieving was self explanatory. And of course by the time I posted it got lost in the tide of other posts. Edited By Jesse Hancock 1 on 09/05/2015 21:05:44 |
Thread: the "Hobbies Lathe": anyone heard of it? |

They did a multi tool as well, saw, sander and if memory serves a power plane all in one. Googled Hobbies tools just now but the name has been taken over it seems. |

My thoughts; Ultrasonic vibration stress relieving will do the trick. Finding some one who can relieve such small parts maybe a problem however. There again it can leave the material buckled (having taken out the stress) and so if it is then straightened stress will enter the job once more. Edited By Jesse Hancock 1 on 08/05/2015 18:55:09 |

It seems a shame to cover it up. Very professional. |

A bit of the plasticine on a thick feeler gauge perhaps then as above. |

So looking at the(site data) rake angles given you need a heavier rake on the tip the smaller the diameter of the job in hand? Edited By Jesse Hancock 1 on 01/05/2015 18:03:45 |

Geoff I think you are getting too anxious as we all do with something new. Get as comfortable as possible sit on a stool so as your centre of gravity is low, clamp the work so that it can't move and use your free hand to help guide the other. This unless you are using a hand held mask... In which case change it and you can become more stable using your free hand to balance. You can tell me off now Geoff granny sucking eggs and all that... What did I do today? What did I do today? What DID I do today? Oh yeah I hung the four way extention on the wall since I was getting fed up with tripping over the leads and head-butting the walls. Drilled a blank angle plate ready to mill slots in it. Got way-layed by a neighbour to go shopping. (I got a couple of ham and tomato rolls out of it so I musn't grumble.) Modified the ten mill bolts I bought yesterday (various lengths) for use on the Mini Mill. (what's the betting they'll all fall between the lengths of fixing bolts I need). Such is life. Must get some round tubing to make spacers for my clamping kit. (proably end up with a tea chest full of bits and bobs for clamping and nothing else at this rate.) One last thing I did other than breathing in and out was descale the filter thingy on the kettle in vinegar. It was pouring anywhere but out of the spout. The water down here is hard thats why no one smiles as their faces set after they have had a wash. Edited By Jesse Hancock 1 on 29/04/2015 20:53:11 |

Set up the Mini Mill, doubled the thickness of the bench and srewed it down to the floor and to the wall. Today bought some bolts ten off. (Don't you just love prepacks?) Oh well the spares may come in handy later maybe. Yes I'm like most Model Engineers where by I save everything just in case. Problem these days is I can't remember I've got it until I return home with another one!!! Anyway I must get on and try some swarf production and maybe then I can look at trying to put an edge on End Cutters. As they say: We are all in the S**t it's only the depth that varies. |

It's possible they are very busy but that should not affect the delivery or at the very least a text or fax to let you know the state of play. (That's what we did back when I was QC/Liaison/Piggy in the middle.) To be fair if it's a one man band then I might be less critical however to jepordise losing a customer these days is plain daft. I really don't like internet buying for this reason. |
Thread: Toolpost holders with morse tapers |
28/04/2015 12:53:52 |
Ok so I order a 2 to 3 so the outside fits the morse in the Mini and the tools I have fit inside that. Thanks Neil I'll take the plunge as all I need now is a site that knows the difference. Is this your lunch break Neil?

Hi Jon, That's the site I was looking at but I just got more and more confused trying to figure out what gusinta what. So you think I need a three to two then (adapter) and Bobs your uncle. Thanks Jon.

I thought I'd revive this thread to ask: Is there a difference between a Morse Taper adapter (Say mt 3 down to 2mt) or will all morse tapers fit within one another? Briefly I want to be able to use my tooling for mt 2 from Micro mill and use it with the mt 3 Mini mill. |

The column is now rigid and I have flipped the electrics box using just the top fixings, so gained a couple of allen screws yippey! It's not perfect because the main cable now meanders behind the motor to the emergency stop and speed control but that will have to be for another day. Note it's not stretched at all. Just looks odd (Bodged). In retrospect it's probably just as easy to take both boxes off, bore another large hole on the opposite side of the large box and obtain a length of three core lead ready (It's painfully short anyway) for the change if you're contemplating this alteration. Also a disc or rubber bung to seal the redundant hole.
Next a nice piece of U section ground to clean from my old works. I hope the boss still remembers me kindly as I haven't dropped in over most of the Winter.

Got the mini mill home today and stripped it. looking at various ways of locking the pillar and silencing the gearbox! Are they all this noisey? Perhaps needs a good dollop of grease. Also looking at moving the electrics further up the column perhaps just using the lower fixing points in the upper threaded holes or screwing it to the nearest wall mid height of the column. There seems to be enough cable but if not I'll get more to suit. This will allow a longer bracing piece(U section 10mm thick if I can find some and ground flat.) on the rear of the column. A guy on one site has installed gas shocks(?) and sash weight as he says the spring thingy doesn't work very well. I assume this is what causes the creep everyone seems to remark about. Advise welcomed one this one. Jesse

Thread: lathe books. |

It's a given that any book on the subject (if read) will be better than none. (except those with missing chapters) Pet hate of mine is buying over the internet. Regarding utube, you can rerun parts (stop move back on the feed bar thingy) if you didn't quite grasp it the first time as often as you want. I joined this site which I think is and has the best blend of features and help around with one exception and that's the search engine not very good in my view. Some of the guys on here have an encyclopedic knowledge of engineering and all attached areas. I like Tee Publishing series of books there's one on most of the subjects a hobbyist engineer might encounter.

Thread: Ball turning adapter |
24/04/2015 15:22:00 |
I'm contemplating buying a ball turning adapter however I need information as to how small it can handle. 5mm 10mm 15mm??? It's nice to think that turning handles and knobs is now childs play but I haven't found any info on how small a ball or inside curve it will turn. Has anyone on here bought one and experimented with it to find out it's full potential? Meanwhile I'll try Googling the ether and see what turns up. (Oh the irony of it.) |
