Thread: RPM Counter connections
28/12/2020 16:41:47

This little bugger is driving me up the wall, I connected as diagram on back of display switched on and got display with numbers on and thought all is well, but when I ran the spindle no numbers just display showing zeros. Removed the sensor from machine and tried waving magnet across sensor but no joy.

Played around different combination of connections but still no numbers.

Reading the above posts there seems to be a question on pin 2, should it be connected to ground? I have tried this but to no effect.

Anyone got thoughts!

Thanks

I found this bit of kit from China http://www.brushless-dcmotor.com/sale-10204278-60-385v-dc-2-quadrant-high-power-bldc-motor-driver-with-current-closed-loop.html

It got the spindle working again.

I contacted the manufacture and the came up with a wiring solution totally different to the notes on their spec notes, and hey ho the bugger WORKS, much to my relief.

With hindsight I should have done that in the first place, rather than annoying ME

members, so thanks to those who replied with suggestions.

As I said I am out of my depth when it comes to theory of electronics, but to get the mill working who in my part of the world is going to take on a task like this? Answer NO ONE.

As I have no display and no volts on the windings output of the board a assume it is the board not the motor, I have not investigated the motor again assumed it is the one on Arc spares.

The controller I have bought is not the same one I showed in an earlier post, as got no reply from my enquiry.

Have you looked at the Arc motor spec? if so please tell me what you think the voltage is?

There are many 36, 48 60 v DC Brushless Motor controllers on the market, but as stated earlier I was trying to find one with 230V rating .

Thank you for you input, but I am not an electrical engineer these charts mean not a lot to me. I can understand conect terminal U to Hall Ha and the like.

Jason

Same as above but looking at the Arc spares for SX3 motor states 230V DC all I can do is follow what others tell me!!

The controller Arc sell will only operate the spindle manually, as it’s a CNC machine it is ideal the machine controller runs the spindle, speed and direction.

The driver I have will do this if I can get it going!!!

I am into it for £300, if I get nowhere with new driver, I might have to consider forking out another £250 for the Arc board and run the spindle manually?

I have found a motor driver suitable for the 230v DC brushless motor.

I connected power in to windings also hall sensors, and set various switches but no movement from spindle.

I have attached specs and notes, any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Thanks for the advise, I have found this controller

Do you think it would work?

I have a Syil X3 CNC milling machine, I think I must have been one of the first to buy theses machines some 9 years ago, they were cursed with problems most being electronics, but managed to solve the issues as they came up.

However, the spindle control board has finally given up the ghost all other stepper motors work well. Even if I could find a replacement board my faith in them has long since gone. I would like advice on controlling the spindle which is powered by a 20V DC brushless motor. Is it possible to use a VFD and change the output via a rectifier to DC?

I have looked for DC motor controllers but the highest voltage I could find was 80V

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thread: Drawing board v CAD
18/04/2018 10:52:17

For those who are struggling with Fusion and other complex packages myself included, it is worth understanding that these programmes are designed for industry and mass manufacturing. The principle as I understand it is one of designing in 3D to understand the shape, then go to ortho to get a 2D drawing. Which is contrary to those of us of a certain age who are used to drawing in 2D from the start which is what most of us probably want to make a one of part. The simpler 2D CAD packages are best for this approach

We all work in our own way and old habits die hard, but those who have looked over the hill to see the sunny new uplands are having a great time. Like a lot of things in life we form opinions without actually experiencing the issue. I took up CAD and CNC around seven years ago without any prior experience with either, and yes, I did struggle but once the penny dropped I was away, after 51 years as a model engineer I was reborn making things that I considered beyond my skills. As a previous contributor mentioned it taxes your brain thus keeping it active and most of all very enjoyable, which after all said and done why we participate in this wonderful hobby.

Go on have a look you won’t regret it

Hi Rod

Have a look at Model Wheelwrights site, http://www.guildofmodelwheelwrights.org/GOMW_Library_plans.htm

They have plans for Napoleonic Cannon , limber and ammunition cart.

I made an 18 pounder a few years ago, good fun.

Thread: Mach 3 Question
21/04/2017 10:26:39

Interesting to read John Stevenson’s account of the development of Mach and Sieg X3, I was not aware how involved all three were in getting Mach to be very good CNC control software

I have had my Syil X3 for around seven years now and one of Hugh’s first customers at Amadeal, apart from a few dodgy crimps and under rated power supplies the machine has worked well to date. I don’t think many people understand that you can use a CNC mill as a conventional mill with a powered table, just by writing a few lines of G code, so you have the benefit of both forms of machine tool.

I recently celebrated fifty years as a model engineer, but latterly using CNC has been a real joy, and can’t thank the three mentioned above enough in making an affordable CNC system available to the hobby market.

Thread: Centec 2B Mill

Jay

Grab it before anyone else sees it, Centec’s are excellent mills for ME’s I have had two of them. Really solid and well engineered, a raising block for the vertical head is a useful addition, if it doesn’t come with one you can make one on the mill.

If you need more convincing Cheery Hind made all her wonderful models on a Centec, there are currently three versions on eBay.

Thread: Use of brass in Boilers
09/01/2017 17:27:17

Thanks for all your comments and recommendations, the rule of no brass in contact with boiler water would seem to be sensible.

Interesting that Martin Evans specifies brass for the steam pipe!! I wonder how he and the other renowned designers such as Curly ran their engines?
