Don't forget you will need room to insert the draw bar. Robert Butler
A lesson I learned the hard way ! My workshop then was the bottom half of an old barn, the top half being a new bedroom and bathroom. The downstairs had a concrete floor, and the upstairs a wooden one. The downstairs had a false ceiling holding up some 4" of insulation. When my Myford VMB arrived I found that the drawbar was a couple of inches too long to remove/insert. I cut a square hole in the ceiling plasterboard over the spindle, and lined it with a bit of square drainpipe. I could then remove the drawbar, with about 1" to spare under the wooden floor upstairs. Phew ! |
Thread: UK DRIVING LICENCE [ 2022 issue ] |
29/09/2022 17:29:52 |
Just necro-posting to this old thread with a bit of relevant information for anyone on a medical suspension in the UK (ISTR one being mentioned in this forum earlier). I had a heart problem for a few months last year, which meant I had to surrender my driving licence . When I was cured I applied to the DVLA for a new licence, with a letter from the consultant saying I was fit to drive, on 14th October 2021. I rang the DVLA and was told it would take from 6 to 10 weeks. On 29th April 2022 I received a set of forms to fill in (which started by thanking me for my "recent" ! application). I returned the forms, with all the information they requested, on 6th May. On 2nd August received a letter from the DVLA to say they were going to contact my heart consultant for his opinion (which he'd already given in the letter from him I forwarded with the original application). Today (29th September) my new licence finally arrived - a total of 50 weeks after the original application ! In short - 1) Don't believe any date or duration the DVLA tells you, 2) Don't give up, they seem to be getting round to doing things eventually. |
Thread: 3/8”/M10 |

I have converted M12 tappings in blank arbors to 3/8 BSW by Loctiting in a piece of M12 studding and then drill and tap to 3/8 BSW. M10 (0.393" )is 8.5 mm ( 0.3362) Tapping size (Core dia 8.159 mm 0.321" ) 1.5 mm (p 0.059" ) pitch 3/8 BSW is 0.3125" Tapping Size, (Core diameter 0.295" ) 16 tpi (0.06252 ) pitch The sizes and pitches seem all a little too close for plugging and retapping to be feasible. My method would be to make up a drawbar with a M10 thread on the end, if that will pass through the spindle. Howard I can confirm that plugging and tapping won't work, having tried it myself. I made up an extra drawbar for the other thread in the end. |
Thread: Linux Mint |

Thanks for the help, I don't think it's the cable, as it works OK on Mint 17 on more than one PC (I never got around to trying Mint 19).

I doubt it's the chip, as the camera wasn't small and cheap. I got a vague suggestion that it was a timing problem of some kind, in that the camera wasn't responding quickly enough to a poll from the PC - it was suggested that someone had reduced the relevant timer in Mint for some reason, and my problem is just collateral damage. I never did find out how to report the problem to whoever produces Mint, support there seems almost as obscure as MS... |

It's anti-money laundering stuff and it's got quite strict for the little people here in the UK Whereas the big people carry on as before with offshore tax-havens and the like - it's all (damned annoying) window-dressing really. |

I've been using Mint 21 for quite a while now. The only problem I've found is that it won't recognise my camera when I attach it via USB. I have to dual-boot to Mint 17, attach the camera, copy the photo's from the camera to a shared drive, reboot to Mint 21, and copy the photo's from the shared drive back to main storage. A nuisance but I don't take that many photo's so it's livable-with. It's quite an old camera, a Panasonic Finepix HS10, so I don't know if it's any better on a more recent model. The other thing to remember is that it doesn't work on 32-bit machines. I have an ancient 32-bit laptop in my shed for music & the odd google search, but that won't accept an upgrade to Mint 21. |
Thread: MOT - am I being taken for a ride? |

Posted by not done it yet on 14/09/2022 06:24:38:One proper mechanic I used, until he died, always gave the vehicle a cursory glance, then took it for test and then rectified any faults found before re-testing later that same day. It’s one reason why they report so many fails, these days. 🙂
An MOT inspector I used for many years told me that, if he felt a car was borderline, he'd consider if he'd be happy to drive it to London (140 miles) in that condition. If he would he'd find a reason to pass it, if not he'd find a reason to fail it.

However as Tina is not like the ones Ramon and Andrew show because the bearing is part of the gun metal pedestal and cap I would machine the mating faces of the pedestal and cap then drill and tap as required before screwing them together and then machine the assembly making sure to mark them before taking apart so you put the back the right way.
Sounds like a plan, I'll try it that way - thanks. |

Plan for the day - finish the main bearing stands for my 'Tina'. Actual activity of the day - bottle 42 pints of home-brew lager (it was ready earlier than I expected). The best-laid plans of mice and men... |

Never worked for me, the soft solder is too weak. I'd agree with Bernard, use mechanical fixings. This picture shows boring bearings, but is equally applicable if the bearing stand and bearing cap hole is round: Andrew Your picture shows a separate bearing held together by the housing, whereas mine is drilled into the housing itself (it's on a Kennions' 'Tina' ), does that make any difference ?

Or bolt it together with its proper fixings I'll try that, thanks. |

Whilst I'm not exactly a beginner, this is something I've never actually done before, so I'd like to be sure I've got it right. I have to temporarily solder together the main bearing stand and the main bearing cap, prior to drilling and boring the bearing-hole. Am I correct in thinking I should tin both relevant faces, and then clamp them together and reheat to join them ? |
Thread: Myford Oil Gun replacement |

Posted by Swarf, Mostly! on 05/09/2022 13:23:38:
Bob, Please could you clarify? Is your 'old' Myford oil gun the small Tecalemit gun? If so, does it leak from the nozzle to oil nipple junction or from the filler cap end or both? Best regards, Swarf, Mostly! Yes, it is the small Tecalmit gun, and it leaks from everywhere it possibly could leak. It's 25 years old, so not really surprising. |

Thanks folks. Having had a look at the various options I've gone for a Reilang R003-253. There are other, possibly better, ones - but too expensive for me |
04/09/2022 19:29:18 |
My ancient Myford oil gun has finally got to the point where it leaks more than it pumps, so I need a replacement. I've never been keen on the Myford item, it leaked from day one. Can anyone suggest a (not too expensive) non-leaking alternative ? TIA

Thanks. Does that involve stripping-down the saddle, or can I get at it from outside ? |

Anyone here familiar with the Myford 254 Saddle-lock ? Mine isn't locking as well as it should... |

A slight aside - I have a genuine Myford QCTP purchased with my 254 in 1998. Does anyone know if the Chronos set of 5 Soba brand holders (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333870622899) are compatible ? I asked Chronos but they don't know. |
