I've bought India made chucks, very good value and nothing wrong with the couple I have.

My IP address is not "fixed" as such but it rarely changes, certainly logging off and on again would not change it.

Firefox and Windows 10.

I do have concerns about what it seems to be learning about me.

I have tried to prevent it giving me suggestions all the time, with minimal success. e.g. learns in flleebay and others what I might want.

If anyone knows of a browser which does not do it or how to turn it all off it would help - even if I had to pay for it!

Supposedly TOR is the most secure of all browsers

Thread: Parting off alluminium
07/01/2017 10:51:39

I cut at a slow speed as far as I can until I notice the first signs of sticking then back right out and take another cut to one side slightly less than the tool's cutting width thus having a wider cut. Return tool to original position and continue cutting which it will now do without sticking. Usually once is enough on say a 2" diameter piece but might need to do same again on a much larger diameter. Takes longer to explain than do it

(Edit: Having typed that I now see Eric does the same! )

Thread: "Tang" on the end of a male Morse taper?

Posted by not done it yet on 06/01/2017 23:39:30:......, while many threaded male tapers need a bolt, or similar, fitted to enable them to eject from a tailstock, per eg.

I've often found this necessary but wondered if what I was doing was correct. Glad to now know it is the right method.

If it's model engineering sort of size you could try asking on the Mamod forum.

Thread: Scrapping an Electric Cooker

Some lovely cast iron plates on ours but no chance to get them. The cooker is 35+ years old and still as good as new. It's extremely well made and I'm pretty sure it will outlive me.

The Chester 9 x 20 is very similar in appearance to the C4 ....but has the added benefit of a gearbox....and is cheaper....

Quality is good and generally I feel it a good first lathe ( it was my first purchase)....

I've added a vfd-3 phase motor conversion on mine, qctp and a few other mods....

For a first time lathe I feel it a good buy, 6 speeds, gearbox for screw cutting ( if needed) ....no motor or speed controller to burn out.... 9 inch swing and 20 in centres....plenty of accessories if needed....

Hi John

I think the Axminster one is made by Sieg which is why it might be costing a bit more ,

The Chester one looks a pretty good buy , all accessories included !! ----- Just one or two small problems

A, its out stock . B, Chester have not been doing to well on delivery times going by what some have said on the forum...............b

If & when they do restock be sure to check for any spec" changes

I have a 9x20with different maker's label but it's a generic Chinese lathe that come in many variants but are all much the same. I had a few minor improvements and adjustments to make when I first got it but nothing much. Very pleased with it.

The only safeguard for the buyer is HONESTLY assessed feedback.!

Fine in theory, Bill, but it's likely to net you retaliatory feedback yourself (why so many sellers wait for your feedback before giving you theirs). That said, I wouldn't be "proud" of not giving negative feedback to scumbags as that earlier poster professed to be.

Sellers cannot leave negative or neutral feedback. For several years they can only leave positive or none at all.

Thread: Lathe Accuracy
11/12/2016 11:26:47

I've seen extraordinarily good work turned out from old far from accurate lathes. I've also seen very good lathes that have never done any serious work at all, aside from turning out test bars. smiley

Thread: Lathe backplate chuck help

Christine,

You've had rather a bad start to your lathe but that 39x4 spindle thread is really the only troublesome feature to overcome. Everything else you might need is easy to come by and fairly standard. The 9x20s from many sources are all the same machine under different paint jobs.Grizzly, Jet, Enco, Harbor Freight and many others - they are all basically the same lathe.

PDF manual here http://cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g4000_m.pdf

This is the Grizzly manual but it is identical to your lathe,

Roger
