I cut at a slow speed as far as I can until I notice the first signs of sticking then back right out and take another cut to one side slightly less than the tool's cutting width thus having a wider cut. Return tool to original position and continue cutting which it will now do without sticking. Usually once is enough on say a 2" diameter piece but might need to do same again on a much larger diameter. Takes longer to explain than do it

I've often found this necessary but wondered if what I was doing was correct. Glad to now know it is the right method.

Some lovely cast iron plates on ours but no chance to get them. The cooker is 35+ years old and still as good as new. It's extremely well made and I'm pretty sure it will outlive me.

I have a 9x20with different maker's label but it's a generic Chinese lathe that come in many variants but are all much the same. I had a few minor improvements and adjustments to make when I first got it but nothing much. Very pleased with it.

I've seen extraordinarily good work turned out from old far from accurate lathes. I've also seen very good lathes that have never done any serious work at all, aside from turning out test bars.

You've had rather a bad start to your lathe but that 39x4 spindle thread is really the only troublesome feature to overcome. Everything else you might need is easy to come by and fairly standard. The 9x20s from many sources are all the same machine under different paint jobs.Grizzly, Jet, Enco, Harbor Freight and many others - they are all basically the same lathe.
