Thread: 2D and 3D Cad Software Recommendations |
24/06/2021 16:48:47 |
Just like to express my thanks to the advice and suggestions so far. Currently I am looking at Atom3D and Solid Edge, and am waiting for a usable key for the Turbocad Designer trial. Also quite like the look of MOI. I've access to Onshape, but I'll get to try that later. Fusion has a lot to offer and I'm using that as the benchmark, I've found that its only on my laptop that the 2D drawings are unusaable, not sure why that is, its not screen resolution as I've tried that, do not know what has changed. I want to find a suitable software program for 2D and 3D drawing. This will be for hobby (non Profit) use. I'm currently using Fusion 360 for producing 3D print files and while I'm comfortable with using it the lack of ability to produce engineering drawings is disapointing, I had previously been able to get these but the last paring back of features in the free version seems to have removed this feature. I've used Autocad at tech and Draftsight (now no longer free) in the past and have tried FreeCad and SolidEdge with limited success. I don't mind paying a reasonable price for a product but some of the prices I've seen seem very expensive for hobby use. What do others use or suggest? Dave J |

I tend to agree with Andrew T, plastic as used in 3D prints suitable only for toys or perhaps replacement grips |
Thread: Indexable tool insert replacements |
26/02/2021 07:33:07 |
I'm at the point of needing to replace the inserts on my lathe tools. I have identified the sizes: CCMT060204, DCMT07204 and TCMT1102. My question is "what is the difference in brands?" There seems to be a huge range of prices for what seems to be similar tools. Interested to hear peoples views on this. Dave |

I've got one of these on my ML7 (1962 vintage), does anyone know where to get the shoes or the friction material? Regards Dave J |
Thread: Myford ML 7 Gearbox |
27/05/2020 14:01:02 |
I've recently got stuck into the build of my 1962 ML7, bought in disassembled form. I've got several questions, but I'll ask them one at a time! I have re-assembled the screw-cutting gear box and fitted it, I'm getting ready to lubricate it ready for when I've got the lathe motorised. The gearbox came with oil nipples as standard, I ordered some oil cups from Myford/RDG thinking this was a better option and in my ignorance thought these would be a direct fit. That's not the case, the cover will need to be drilled for them to fit. Before I commit to doing this non reversable modification, is it worth doing? Also does anyone know the optimum drill size for this? I'm assuming here that the oil cups are designed to be a tight push fit. Any advice/information much appreciated. |
Thread: ML7 how much space needed? |
02/02/2020 14:06:34 |
I've bought a dis-assembled ML7 with a stand and gearbox. How much space will I need to operate the lathe and access the covers at the headstock end. I cannot measure at present as its stored away. Any information much appreciated. David |

I've used several of the IKEA angle-poise type lights in my workshop in the past, works a treat. I've just bought one of the freestanding bendy led lights, planning to add a bracket instead of the freestanding heavy base. Should be just right for the mini lathe!

It would seem that these mills, like their lathe counterparts need some initial inspection and setting up, I have a Draper Mill/Drill/Lathe combo which needed an almost complete strip and rebuild before it was suitable to use. recently I bought a mini lathe second hand and have carried out an initial strip rebuild and adjust. I was quite shocked to find the gear train banjo out of alignment such that one set of gears was barely in 50% alignment! I'm researching milling machines at the moment to replace or supliment the draper, but expect to carry out some final fitting and alignment on anything I buy. Its down to cost at the end of the day, you still get a lot of machine for your money and an excuse to tinker!
