Thread: William cylinder drain cocks |

Thanks guys. Everyone seems to be of the same mind. I have ordered some automatic ones from Kennions. Richard |

Hi all Martin Evans William 3 1/2 inch steam locomotive. Drain cocks are not shown on the plans but I'm sure it's best to have them I really need to buy a commercial product as 3 years in with this project I need to make a bit quicker progress! Could I use automatic drain cocks or should I put on some lever operated ones and manually operate them. I don't intend to go for linkage rods. Thanks for any advise Richard |
Thread: Sieg SC4 change gears |

Well, I think the gear change is all OK. Many thanks Richard

Andrew, that picture is very helpful and almost answers the question. There are 2 small allen screws top and bottom on mine, which I assume lock it in place, presumably these have to come out 1st ? thanks for your advise Richard |

I need to cut a 20TPI left hand thread with my Sieg SC4 lathe. I have the appropriate gears in place and moved "A" to the left so that the lead screw goes in reverse. However I am unable to get the AB gears to mesh as the gear to the right of the picture is in the way.
Can this be removed, if so how please, or am I missing something! This is my first attempt at changing gears and cutting a thread. Maybe not ideal to have to be a left hand one but it has to be. Help much appreciated Richard |

Thanks J. Good to know you have successfully made one. Stretcher D is modified on my plans and will check out the lifting arm dimension Richard. |

Jeff Thanks for the advise, I just hope I don't hit too many problems! William is after all meant to be a beginners engine. Regards Richard |

Thanks Phil, got it. But is this normal to have to do this on a Martin Evans design? Seems a bit odd to me Richard |
11/04/2018 10:28:06 |
Hi I started on Martin Evans William in February, as I am very much a beginner this seemed a sensible first locomotive. I have the book which is very helpful but doesn't answer all of the many questions that will arise! The chassis is coming along well and I have made the water pump. My question is this. The inlet and outlet (on pump) are threaded 3/8 ins. and 5/32 pipe is shown on the backhead. All of the suppliers I can find do union nuts that are for 1/4 pipe for 3/8 thread and 5/32 thread for 1/4 ins pipe Not sure how to get round this, I certainly don't want to start making my own union nuts! or I will never get this project finished. Any advise much appreciated. Richard |
Thread: Side play on tender wheels |
12/07/2015 10:40:33 |
I am building a Doris tender and just started on the axles. Would be grateful for advise on how much side play the wheels should have ie lateral movement so that it will go round a reasonable radius track. Thanks Richard

Thread: Actual size Drawings |
30/11/2014 10:28:18 |
There is a border and it's a different distance from the edge on each side of the paper. |
30/11/2014 10:07:39 |
In answer to your question Jason. A dimension of 5 1/4 ins on the main frame is represented by 4 7/8 ins on the drawing. As this is a relatively small reduction I find it hard to believe that LBSC wouldn't have drawn the main frame actual size. Incidentally, I used to build model aeroplanes and plans were always actual size Maybe I am expecting too much. Thanks Richard

Thread: Dimensional errors in LBSC Doris drawings |

Hi I am about to start construction of LBSC Doris. Would be grateful to know if anyone has a list of dimensional errors on the drawings. Thanks Richard

Thread: Actual size Drawings |

Ian Thanks for the comprehensive reply and advise. I'll ask the pertinent question in another post. Regards Richard

Hi Have just received a set of drawings from one of our main suppliers for LBSC Doris. I assumed that these would be drawn "actual size", they are not and don't seem to be to any consistent scale. My question is, is this normal? and can drawings be supplied actual size from any other source? Thanks in anticipation of a response. Richard

Thread: LBSC Doris |

Bob Thanks for the advise, which I have taken on board, it looks a fine locomotive. Something else for me to consider. Regards Richard

Thanks for the offer Ian. What I have is to be found at **LINK** .this doesn't seem to be complete, I'm sure there must be a lot of material after this. I hope someone can tell me how to access the rest of the archive because I'm sure I read somewhere that it was available but at extra cost. This would be the best solution. However, I don't have to have a go at Doris. I'm sure I want to build a 3 1/2 ins as this should be moveable! Something with a tender that looks good, any suggestions? Regards Richard

Hi I am considering building LBSC's Doris as a first project, as I am over 60 and it could take some time I may only be making one loco! I hope this is not considered to ambitious. I have subscribed to Model Engineer Digital in the hope of printing out the original articles but now find they don't go back that far. Rather frustrating. I have managed to locate on the internet some of the articles but not the latter ones. Are re-prints for Doris available? Any suggestions on how to proceed or advise would be appreciated. Thanks Richard
