Thread: 2 odd items?
13/05/2017 17:35:04

Thanks guys, would have had no idea how to find that out with certainty. Martin

13/05/2017 17:21:29

Hi All,

Todays haul included these two odd items, a bit out of my tool comfort zone, any info would be appreciated.

First is I think some form of heater, possibly for under a car bonnet, maker is BLADON who did blowlamps etc.

The next item I think is possibly from a motorcycle but no idea what!

Any ideas please?

Thread: Insurance
05/05/2017 21:58:55

A bit off topic but still insurance!

I have long been wondering what the exact situation is for a young driver who buys something like an old Subaru or some such fast car. He somehow manages to get insurance then spends every spare penny he can on making it go faster, lowering it so that an ant has to duck, putting on an exhaust that makes Concorde sound quiet etc etc , you get my drift?

Now, God forbid he knocks someone down or crashes and maims his girlfriend, my thinking is that he is not covered as it is a penny to a pound of horse crap that he has not notifed the insurance of the 'modifications'

When I used to have 'hot' Cooper S Minis my dad used to make me notify the insurance company and I had to pay higher premiums even back then.

What do the plod do when they pull one of these that notionally is insured but has obviosly been 'hotted up'?

Thread: Computer very slow?

Phil W.

Hi, I have run the AVC Scan and Avast boot scan and optimised my disc and turned off the indexing for the C drive. After a restart the machine is MUCH MUCH quicker and responsive, so thank you very much for the advice.

If I am going to get rid of N360 can you reccommend a suitable program for managing my backups? ih a couple of external 2 & 4 Tb disks on my network.

Thanks again,

Martin

Thread: Gift from a neighbour!
04/05/2017 15:41:54

Hi All,

A neighbour popped round today for a cuppa and gave me this which he found under a pile of junk in his shed and was going to bin it but decided to see if I wanted it.

spindle 1.jpg

spindle 2.jpg

spindle 3.jpg

Hooked it up to my airline, filled the reservoir with oil and away it went! The knurled collar near the hose is the control and it sounds like the loudest but smoothest dentist drill you ever heard. Made in USA and says 60,000rpm not a typo! Collet is about dremel size and there are two small wrenches with it.

I have been thinking about trying to make a small VERY simple toolpost grinder and this looks like it might work. Any thoughts please?

Hi Dave,

I have large amounts of storage available at home and my Norton backups reside on those but I believe that they are in 'Norton format?' so if I bin N360 will I still be abale to accesss them somehow.?

I got the paid version of AVC so no ads and only £23 so OK there and will wait a bit on AVast and see what I think of it.before paying up!

Is ther any potential conflict having all three products at the same time? Ceainly could do with saving £70 if I can still backup some other way.

Have installed Advanced system care, and avast anti virus both of which seem very good and found a load of rubbish. Managed to turn off the indexing on the C Drive, (thanks Neil!) and ran a boot scan without any problems.

I am happy to get rid of Norton (and save £70 pa!) but wonder whether it would mean that I lose my backups which are done via Norton 360?

Any thoughts please.

Thanks folks!

How do I turn it off please?

Martin

Right click 'properties'.

In W10 switch of indexing of file contents. You may find it useful to switch it on for certain folders.

Neil

Neil, sorry to be dim but right click where please?

Phil,

How is this going to affect the backups I have that were created by Norton Backup (part of 360)?

When 360 ,is removed will I be able to access the backups?

Martin (getting more and more worried sad)

03/05/2017 22:13:02

Wow! I do have Norton 360 which I have had for years and pay about £70 pa for it.

Is the best advice really to get rid of it...?

Hi All,

Recently for no apparent reason my computer seems to be really slow and I constantly get a creeping progress bar at the top when I open a window. Have I accidentally turned on some kind of indexing feature or something.?

Running Windows 8.1 on what is usually a quite fast machine.

Thread: The Tool Box Colyton Devon
02/05/2017 09:30:32

Hi Tony,

This shop has gone.

All inventory was sold off to one guy who has now dispersed it throughout the south west area.

I bought a huge amount of it from him but that has now also gone.

I did see last weekend a tray of about 25 or so R8 taper tooling items from that lot that were mint when I tried to buy them some while ago but have now been lying in 3" of water in an old metal tray and are actually rusted together! Funny how people would rather have nothing than something!

The owner tried hard to sell it as a going concern but without his contacts for restocking there would have been nothing to sell within a year or so. A lot of what he had was not exactly fast moving stock at the prices asked.

A real shame in many ways as one could often find rarer items ther when asked for them specifically.

Hi All,

Went to the Yeovil Steam Fair today for a root around and found a few goodies.

The most challenging one is this moveable jaw Swedish Machine vice which has been a bit neglected!

Had a smaller one a while ago and it did rather well so will have to see how this one comes up. Cannot remember the name and the label on this is obliterated as well.

Thread: Sudden Radio Adverts on my computer?
20/04/2017 09:15:17

Hi All, Just sitting at my desktop computer doing some work this morning when out of nowhere my speakers just upped and started playing music and adverts for Domestos, and other stuff. Cannot see anything turned on and it stops for a while then starts again when it feels like it..

Very odd indeed, any thoughts please?

Thread: Any Chemists (rust)
19/04/2017 07:49:48

Hi Michael,

I didn't name the product as I did not wish to publicly criticise a particular firms product, indeed I made a point of saying how good it is but just that I cannot understand why it is so costly.

Thanks for your link, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Martin

The active ingredient in the VPI products may well be sodium benzoate or another benzoate. Camphor is alleged to work as well, but it's not so good if you object to your products smelling of moth-balls.

I've tried some camphor blocks in my file draw but it's inconclusive, since the workshop normally has a low humidity and a temperature that rarely changes by more than 3°C in 24 hours. Files haven't gone rusty though!

Hi Mark, On reading your link it would appear that the sodium benzoate is useful as an anti corrosion product in th LIQUID phase, not Vapour? That is impregnated papers or direct application to the product not just in a closed container or drawer which is how the expensive stuff works. I have had a closed drawer fully protected fo about 2 years, obvioulsy continual opening and shutting reduces this time enormously and hence increase the expense.

Hoping Michael G will come in on this with chapter and verse!

Hi Guys,

This is kid of on topic so please forgive the slight deviation. My continual problem is keeping tools stored before sale but after preparation in good clean rust free condition.

By far and away the best product for this comes from a company that sells tiny little pots of Vapour Phase Imhibitor, these are a small piece of sponge with some of the magic product on it enough to just dampen a bit of sponge about an inch square and 1/4" thick, I doubt in total there is 1/2 a cc if even that. Buying these by the 10 is still the eyewatering amount of £30 odd quid. It is a GREAT product but the cost of a litre of this ingredient must rival plutonium! I am all for people making a reasonable margin but his seems way OTT

Product name witheld

What is it that makes this stuff soooo expensive?

There must be a generic VPI chemical? How does VPI exactly work?

I have had to stop using it and now use mothballs in old Shippams paste jars which works pretty well but its getting harder and harder to catch the moths.........wink

Cheers,

Martin
