Hi Brian Many thanks for the advice. I will order some SIF rod & flux later today from CUP. Would you make the small insert part from steel or bronze or just fill with bronze and recut from there? The missing tooth is right above ( and into) a small drilled hole on the gear that takes a locating/drive pin. I can fill this in and drill another elsewhere. Martin

Hi Eric, Sadly I do not have a welder other than a cheap mig unit which I am rubbish at using so will go with the brazed idea but will practise on an old wheel first.Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Got the back gear locking pin made so put the spindle back together along with the back gear cluster. Also started to fit the cross slide but have somehow mislaid the gib strip! I had it in my hand yesterday and so far have spent an hour looking for the bloody thing then came indoors in disgust! Tailstock is now back on: I will probably have a go at the small gear repair tomorrow and have another look for the gib strip which I will doubtless find 5 minutes after I have made a new one..... Cheers, Martin |

Muzzer, perhaps I should say braze? If so I probably don’t have the right flux (HT5) or rods, can you pls advise what I need? Joe, you are very kind, yes I do enjoy bring tools back from the dead, it has turned into a fun little business for retirement. Cheers, Martin |

Hi Bill, Your friend very kindly got back to me with this: 'The gun and shot measuring tools I have come across were steel (or iron), or sometimes brass, so a boxwood one is a bit of a puzzle. It would be interesting to check the Guns and Shot diameters to find out what units they are expressed in. Most cannon were classified as the weight of the shot they fired - 3 pounder etc. - and related to an iron ball. Muzzle loading Smooth-Bored Gun bores were generally noticeably slight larger than the shot they fired - the difference known as 'windage' - to allow for ease of loading.' Regards, Martin |

Hi All, Thought I would post how this is coming along, here is the before pic: Finally got around to stripping it all down and found not too much wrong with it, the ways are really very good with no signs of any major wear, most of the rust is powdery and superficial. The bullwheel has a large chip in the hub and its grubscrew was badly damaged and had to be drilled out; i then made an alloy mandrel which was made a just 'no go' into the wheel and popped into the freezer, wheel was put in the oven (missus was out shopping!), and the two then went together perfectly. Turned down a shoulder to allow an alloy collar to be fitted which itself was then turned down; into themill to drill and tap 5mm for a new cap screw. While it was in the madrel i greased th mandrel wall and filled the damaged area with JB Weld, not too succesfully! Will have to make new locating spring loaded stud and knob for the bull wheel into the pulley cluster as old one is a bit mangled. Thoroughly cleaned all parts and gegreased with acetone then repaint in Myford RAL 7011 grey. The other repair to be done is a small idelr gear that is missing a tooth in the exact position of the gear locating pin. The last time I had one of these Brian Wood very kindly made me a new one but thistime I am going to have a go at making a small brass insert and try silver soldering it in place. (first go at thios so fingers crossed!). Will then file it to shape by hand. (to be continued...) Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Interesting thread! Re myHermes, I must speak as I find here. We send all our EBay items over 2kg using myHermes, their operative Lisa is a delight and we have her number to call if we need an extra pickup and she is in the area. We send about 10 items or so a week so not a huge amount. Had 2 loss claims in last year or so, one for £65 and one for over £100, both settled by Hermes inside a week. We also use UPS via Interparcel for overseas stuff with no problems so far. Used to use Parcel2Go but ended up threatening court action over £35 lost ltem, took forever to get refunded. No, the chap was a ‘no show’, perhaps later this week. It is proving difficult to get any defining answer on this item. I will probably just fly it on EBay at the weekend and see what happens. Cheers, Martin |

Progess on the Grayson: Just got the headstock apart, the grub screw in the bullwheel sheared when I looked at it so had to file it flat and centre pop it, then drill, tried an easy out no go so drilled it right out altogether. The centre boss of the bullwheel has a chunk missing so will make a mandrel and shrink a steel collar on and turn to size. I usually put the wheel in the freezer for an hour then heat the collar and drop it on, works OK mostly. Most of the castings are now painted except the headstock and main body. Will do those tomorrow. Cheers, Martin |

Thanks guys, that helps a lot.seems to make sense! Strange that there seems to be no info in the literature about these. I have a local collector coming to look at it tomorrow who may shed more light. Will keep you posted. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, We have just got this otherwise un-remarkablke 24" 4 fold boxwood & brass rule by TROUGHTON & SIMMS. It came at boot sale with some other tools. We were surpirised to find these two unusual scale when we cleaned the grime off it GUNS Dia & SHOT Dia The scales do not seem to make any kind of sense and there is no reference in Jane Rees Rule 'bible' Any thoughts anyone please? Hi All, We had this nice stick Micrmeter set a while back from a car boot, it had absolutely zero interest on EBay starting at £4.99, listed 3 times and we finally let it go at a car boot for £3! We have had a Moore & Wright one since which made £14. Really nice things but not wanted it seems, even by collectors. Cheers, Martin |

ega, Just checked the static screw, yup, 0.187" OD, For me, close enough to use BSF for cleanups. Cheers, Martin |

Hi all, Got the Grayson apart today, taking pics as I went along. It is mostly in pretty good order just dirty and gummed up, headstock is fine, tumbler reverse is good, one tooth missing on the small idler gear. There is no compound slide and just a basic toolpost with a set of cutters in a box. The ways look very good under just a light powdery surface rust, Scotchbrite will do the trick I think. Quite a few of the grubscrews have manky slots will replace them all. Tailstock missing one clamp just a bodge fitted. The Myford Vertical slide was just covered in thick grease, cleaned up well and given it a coat of RAL7100 grey! Will start the cleanup and reassemby tomorrow. Cheers, Martin |

Hi ega, I was a bit surpised also but the thread is 3/16" 32tpi so I assume BSF? These levels are really very nice; I currently have about 10 in various sizes awaiting a source of new vials but will not pay £30-£40 as not viable. I sometimes get some at David Stanleys if a certain dealer is there, he will let me have a few now and then. Cheers. Martin |

Hi Al, Will pull the lathe apart tomorrow, weather permitting and see what we have, There are a couple of broken castings on the countershaft brackets but the heaadstock looks oK so far. 3 jaw & 4 jaw chucks, cobbled up steady, face plate, full set of change wheels etc so not bad at all. The level cleaned up well after freeing off the adjuster collars and running a 3/16£ BSF tap and die over the threads: The Myford slide is all stripped and repainted, looks in good order. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Funny how things sometimes come together! Sunday morning walking around a large car boot that we do not normally go to I saw an old lathe tailstock on a table and bought it for £3 from the sellers wife. An hour later I wandered by again and she called her husband over and said loudly 'That's Him!'; I was a bit taken aback but the bloke said he had some other bits and pieces like that which were in the way. He was unable to offer more detail other than there was a 'long metal thing' under a pile of rubbish in a shed that he was going to bin by the ned of the week. I took a chance and made a drive over about an hour away in the middle of a forest, waited for him to show up to get me past the biggest dog I have ever seen! This is what I got for £15: Alsoin the box was a Myford Swivelling Vertcal Slide and a really nice undamaged 4" Starrett Precision level all wrapped in oiled leather! Just as I was leaving he said, 'Hang on there's also these' and produced the original change wheels and brass oilers! Thats this weeks cleanup project sorted out! Cheers, Martin |
