Make sure you use a piece of metal or a small rule to set it true - don't use ya finger ! Point taken! Martin |

Hi All, I have several centre finders, two of which I use all the time from choice and feel quite happy with using them. However, I cannot for the life of me understand how one is suposed to use the 'needle point' accessory that some of them have. I have tried to get it in a centre punched hole and managed to break two of them! Clearly I am doing something wrong here and wish to be put right even at the expense of letting all know just how dozy I am at times! Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Grayson Lathe refurb |

Hi All, Had a go at the small gear that had a broken tooth; cut a small piece off of an old plane cutter and wedged it in positon with lots of new No5 flux made with meths which set solid holding the piece in position; dropped a couple of small pieces of brazing rod either side then heated with my oxy acetylene torch (first time I have ever used it!). Here is the result ready for some work with needle files. Will probably let the final buyer do this as my eyesight is not really up to it. Pretty much done now so just a final clean up all round then ready to go. Aitken, Correct about the spindle, do make sure that the bull wheel and pully cluster are really free, mine had a small burr on the spindle which was a bit of a problem, came from the graunched bullwheel locking grub screw. Also protect the lH spindle end and be gentle when tapping it out. Cheers and Happy New Year to All! Martin |

Hi Aitken, I am pretty sorethat this one is on a woodruff key.The spindle is removed from this end towards the headstock spindle, Have you freed off the pullies and bull gear grub screws? Bit late now but will check mine in the morning and post then. Cheers, Martin |

EGA, Yup! posted for you as requested! |

Hi All, Many thanks to George for sending me some piano key tops, just perfect for what was needed. Added the three missing corner pieces and the one missing score board section and it now looks a lot better: Drilling the holes was tricky as they were so near the edges, I started at 1.mm and carefully worked up to the final 2.7mm, one corner piece flew out and was ruined but not to much trouble. Made a couple of brass markers also. Don't get me started on the ivory thing, it a real pet peeve of mine. I am 3 YEARS into a discussion with The Natural History Museum over whether or not a particular species of Sawfish Rostrum (nose) requires Cites or not. Bought a superb one of these about 5 years ago at auction which was fine, put it on EBay and got a £600 bid at once from France which was then pulled by EBay with no option to discuss. Cheers, Martin |
Thread: CNC Anyone recommend small firms that do it? |
23/12/2017 09:05:20 |
Hi, I also could use a contact like that that can make small parts and small 'one offs' for a reasonable price. I often need something done that is noy viable in terms of my time or skill level. I also have some ideas of my own design tools that CNC would possibly make viable, again for smallish production runs.. Cheers Martin |

Spot on! Obrigado! Martin |

Hi All, We get a lot of these small needle files and Bedford is a common make at the upper end of the quality tree after Grobet, Vallorbe, Stubs and a Portugese make that I cannot remember at the moment. They are often very flexible but never seem to break even when pushed hard. All very good news from a selling point of view, they fly away when listed. Cheers and Season's Greetings to all, with many thanks to all the members here who have been kind enough to help me out over the last year. Martin

Thread: Old White Piano Key wanted! |

Hi John, Good idea! I had not thought of the old white handled dinner knives, I often see them at car boots, will now keep an eye out. Many Thanks. Martin |

Hi All, I really need to find an old white piano key so that I can cannibalise the white material on the top to repair a very nice antique cribbage board of unusual design that I have just got. As this is a job for our business I am naturally prepared to pay for this and postage if anyone can help me out. Possibly a small piece of very thin bone would also do but must be a nice whitish cream colour. Regards, Martin |

Hi All, Must be my week for unusual boxwood rules, a pal just dropped round with some tools for me and this was among them: Seems to be a normal gauging rule but have never seen scales for BOUGE BOTTLES or CYLINDER BOTTLES Again no info in Jane Ree's rule bible! Cheers, Martin |
Thread: HELP what is it ???? |
06/12/2017 09:32:25 |
Hi All, Bit of a long shot but the small table at the bottom reminds me of a grease table for catching diamonds. A property of rough (and cut) diamonds is that they cannot be wet so they will stick to a grease table like the proverbial stuff on a blanket! Just a thought... Martin |
