Just bought a very large tool collection from an estate, will take weeks to go through but one item I uncovered today was this cute little data book in it user made soldered tinplate case.

Thought members might find it amusing, you need really good eyesight to use it!

I have dismantled the unit and sharpened the cutters, replaced the very worn cutter locking screws with 3/16W cap screws (kept the originals to go with it!)

The main thread is very fine and required careful removal but after degunking all the rubbish now turns easily and smoothly. The adjustment mechanism is just like that on a scroll chuck, again all crudded up but now free turning.

Absolutely no sign of any makers marks! Just numbering of the scroll parts.

Be interesting to see how it does.

You have it just right!

I have never seen one of these and it did not click in my brain that it is for round parallel sided tenons.

The "normal" Swan cutters make different sizes of conical ends on spindles, they come in set sizes and rarely in adjustable form a bit like the one shown.

They are almost always clearly marked SWAN USA but not this one unless it is somewhere when I take it apart?

A couple of years ago I was at the posh china and glass antique fair at Shepton Mallet and a chap had the most amazing array of delicate china and glass on a large trestle table all sitting on a white tablecloth held down at the corners by 4 "lumps of steel" in his own words!

Looked at me like I was nuts when I offered him £20 for the "lumps" and snatched my hand off!

Full set of 4 numbered SWAN rounding tools!

Hi All,

I am not often stuck with woodwork tools but bought this in an auction box of tools with just a bad photo to go on.

I thought it was a a chair makers spindle rounder by SWAN of the USA but it isn't!

I cannot work out what it is for, can anyone shed any light please, there are no apparent makers marks?

Just bought the SHEPPACH Saw from Aldi to get me out of trouble, if its no good not the end of the world!

Ed, I stand corrected! It is the DWM120K that I am interested in. I can get one from EBay but it will come from USA and have heavy postage and duty to pay but may be the only way. Will the warranty be honoured by De Walt UK?

The reviews and videos all seem very positive and a stand can be easily made it would seem.

has anyone used the Marita version of this?

I cannot for the life of me find anyone offering this here in the UK. EBay has some but from USA with heavy duty etc.

Any other options that people on here may have?

i use mine on an almost daily basis with water, (unit is heated), with just some washing up liquid in it.

Works very welll indeed. Mainly smaller parts and grungy castings etc.

I am assuming that if one is in back gear at low rpm for threading anyway the potential for a problem is much reduced;

Is anyone aware of "upside down" HSS threading tools being available or does one have to make their own? Something I am very bad at doing

i have quite a few small knurled thumbscrews to make with a 3/16 x 24 thread.

I now have the correct dies from Tracy Tools but would also like to have a go at screw cutting in reverse a la Joe Pie on YouTube.

I am aware that the Myford S7 has a screw on spindle and the dangers therein but wonder if anyone has come up with a way of safely locking the chuck to prevent it coming off in reverse running?

Just bought this last week

Swan DRS-215-50 Oil Free Low Noise Compressor

from Axminster, amazed at how quiet it is after my old one. Not cheap at over £500 but a really nice unit.

It is important to me as I do not wsh to upset my lovely neighbours and the old one was very intrusive when running.

Hi all,

Here is the start of the next plane part project, the small clamping part for the early RECORD plough plane models 043. 044 and MARPLES variant M4. Also the RAPIER models although these are slightly different.

Originals are in cast iron and are about the first part to disappear into the ether when finding the plane second hand.

Have started to mill the profile as shown here but can only accommodate a small length in my vice, work holding is pretty tricky also allowing only very small cuts. Material is some steel from the scrap bin, cuts OK.

The idea is to get this profile done as in the original as far as I can, then get the top profile water jetted from above. The small scallops and final finishing to be done by hand.

Again I think I will need some horizontal milling done to machine economical viable lengths.

Should keep me out of trouble for a while !
