It looks like the Bowden cable goes to the back and operates the clutch, was this standard? What was the bit of bent alloy sheet at left of headstock for? It is very battered? One oiler has lost its cover so will make another. I have made a start cleaning the odd bit and it looks like it will come up very well with a bit of effort. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Finally got it out of the car this morning, it is bloody heavy! Assembled the main parts: Here are the main bits and pieces with it so far: There is this weird broken Bowden cable hanging loose: The flywheel is ENORMOUS and very heavy, treadle part is also with it. The head stock has a draw bar that does not seem to screw into the chuck so not sure how the chuck comes on or off? The small drawers contain a lot of collets and some very nice gear cutters and other bits and bobs. I have been in contact with the guy I got it from and we will try and fit in with him to get the other parts even if it means another long drive. I think that I will just clean all the gunk from it and brighten up the metalwork a bit, something very gentle. Cheers, Martin |

I am afraid I have been guilty of a couple of these things, they can make very good money and who am I to be the arbiter or other people’s taste? This made just over £100 at Yeovil Car Boot some years ago. Cheers, Martin |

ChrisH, Yeovil Car Boot is every Sunday from 1300 hrs at the Yeovil Showgound, £2 per car; early buyers pay £8 per person each to get in at 1100hrs, rather than pay that we put a table and box of junk in the car and pay the sellers fee of £7! Mind you, I am not saying that was where the lathe came from.........😊 Next Sunday is the first Shepton Mallet Flea Market for quite a while so we will be looking to fill our boots then! lathe still in the car as our 2 neighbours are both away! cheers, Martin |

Nigel, I have had quite a lot of projects water jet cut with great success: Slitting blade cutters for rare planes, Preston spokeshave cutters, currently having 50 plane clamps cut from machined blanks of gauge plate. The linisher project is by far the biggest with one part being cut from 100mm ally sheet! as you say there is no edge heating which is great for cutters etc. cheers, Martin

Vic, thanks very much for that fantastic link, you must have put a lot of work into the site! I shall study it in detail and let you know what I find if/when the guy comes up with the missing box of parts, fingers crossed. Are you by any chance based down South? cheers, Martin |

Hi Pete, you are dead right, just been out and took a pic of the tailstock complete with blob of white paint! What are the odds on that? I can’t wait to get it out of the car and set up. I have the flywheel, treadle and a unit with two wooden drawers that slides under the main part, all pretty heavy and awkward to lift. Not sure yet what to do with it as we just do not have the room for another ‘toy project’ as The War Office calls them! Currently need what free space we have to build the 75 x 2000 linisher I got plans of and now being water jetted. will update when I have it out and assembled. cheers, Martin |

Hi All, For some reason to day we were about 15minutes earlier than usual at our Sunday car boot, barely anyone there and the house clearance guys were just setting up. Just as I approached one van, the driver and his mate were struggling to get this out of the back: Could not believe my eyes so bought it immediately for a bit off his asking price as he did not want to have to lift it back if not sold! Has its treadle, flywheel and a bunch of tooling with another box he did not put on the van this week so have to go to Yeovil to collect. I cannot wait to get some help to get it out of my car and have a good look at it. Funny thing was there was nothing else of much interest anywhere so we would have been very disappointed after a 90 minute drive to spend so little if this had not come up. Cheers, Martin |

Hi Michael, Cannot get either link to open? Can get to the German site but no links? Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, In this weeks haul was this German made item which appears to be some sort of adjustable trammel tool, possibly incomplete? Has small roller at one end What looks like a hole for a pencil with clamp and also a retractable sharp pin Cannot find anything about the name; Any thoughts anyone/ Cheers, Martin |

Many years ago we needed a door handle mechanism for a Ferrari, the price from Maranello Concssionaires the dealer was in 3 figures even back then. Found out that the handle on a Fiat X19 was exactly the same item for about 15% of the price from a Fiat dealer! Nothing changes... Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Strange Plug Gauge Sizes? |

Thanks for the numbers Jason, a big help! Martin |
03/05/2021 16:14:45 |
Hi Jason, Just measured with a clean cheapo digital vernier caliper so not that accurate. Will try a micrometer tomorrow. Nice find though for £2! Got a box of broaches as well which seem very clean but some are a bit big for my kit. The guy was selling some huge angle plates that I could never ever lift, God knows how he thought they would go at a car boot! Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated. Martin |

Hi Jason, Many thanks, I was just assuming all were Imperial! I made .985" come to 25mm! Typo I guess.. Are these gauges made to be just very, very slightly under their nominal size for some reason? They seem like very useful things to have around when boring etc, I think I will keep these and make a numbered case for them. Cheers, Martin |
03/05/2021 15:35:10 |
Hi All, This weekends car boot haul included a large selection of these plug gauges, all in very good condition but with very strange diameters. I was expecting to see the normal .125, 250, 500 etc sizes but there are very few of those. Are these for special applications of some sort? There are many more smaller sizes as yet un-measured! Cheers, Martin |
Thread: Problems trying to sell-on a 'Swiss' Army knife |
29/04/2021 16:05:42 |
Hi All, I used to have no end of problems with EBay listings for "drawknife", the woodworking tool. Was a huge problem at the time as I had bought over 700 new old stock tools from a French army base. Got round it by having a chat with customer service and inserting in each listing at the top in large capitals: "EBay please note that this is a bona fide woodworking tool!! Worked a treat and I still use it for any drwaknife listing! Cheers, Martin |

Nice one Rik, 3D is ideal for these smaller non stressed parts, I have done well with my plane fences. Cheers, Martin |
