Thread: Any Old Gun Experts out there? |
09/12/2021 15:11:29 |
Hi All, I am not sure what the odds are on finding ANOTHER early gun tool within a month of the first one? Went over to Weymouth to buy a couple of micrometer sets from a guy on FaceBook, asked if he had anything else and he showed me several crates of mostly junk but in with it was this tool and the other items listed below which I am pretty ignorant about and would welcome any help. I think it is all gun related. Will add the other items when I have done the pics. Cheers, Martin

Hi All, Just had an extraction two weeks ago, cost me £250, I assumed I was NHS, it would appear from the table above that I am not? Got to go back in Feb for a 3d scan to determine the bone loss , if any, and have been told that an implant will be north of £2k The joys of getting old I guess. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Jason has it right. Depth stop uses a thumb screw not a cheese head. Generally but NOT always Stanley seemed to use the odd number 32nd W sizes for most of their screws. (5,7 & 9) For the USA made planes I think that Stanley used whatever they had lying around! The 78's are notorious for being absent depth stops and fences are often broken which is why I snap them up whenever possible. I am in the process of 3D printing a batch of 78 depth stops as we speak! I have been doing the fences for the 71 & 071 Router planes and they sell like hot cakes as the original items make outrageous amounts of money. They are perfectly good for users even if "collectors" send me hate mail! (TRUE!) Cheers, Martin |

Martin Kyte, Just noticed that your link is to Patrick Leach's Blood & Gore site; THE definitive Stanley plane resource on the net. Patrick is a good friend and a great buyer and seller of rare and quality tools with a wealth of knowledge. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, I have seen and had no end of these broken No:78's, usually for spares. I have never had any luck trying to weld them but now that I have my TIG unit I may have a go for fun. Not worth selling a repaired one though. I am just listing a nice complete boxed Woden version the last of three that I bought at a flea market. They used to do very well but not so good these days. Lots of people sell them on EBay when cut down as "Chisel Planes" and the suckers seem to like them! Cheers,Martin |

Thread: ROLOC adapter for a small Angle Grinder? |
19/11/2021 21:49:05 |
Michael, I had noticed the adapter in the review, have just ordered one and will see how it goes. Looks to be 3D printed and if no good I will make one in steel as per Jason’s reply. thanks everyone! Martin |

Hi All, I have just bought this small KATSU angle grinder from Amazon as it is easier on my wrists and a lot quieter than the 115mm one that I have at the moment. I want to use it for cleaning up material before welding etc. I have also got a lot of small ROLOC 75mm flap discs and the normal drill adapter with 1/4" shaft. The grinder will take small Dremel type cutters etc as shown. I would like some advice on a SAFE way to make some sort of adapter to take the 1/4" ROLOC shaft so that I can use the discs. Using them in a drill soon gets uncomfortable and I have a fair bit of material to prepare for welding of the linisher base. All thoughts welcome! Cheers, Martin |

Thread: Casting Ships Propellers - the nitty-gritty! |
13/11/2021 13:02:47 |
Hi All, Many years ago I worked at Stone Manganese Marine in E London as part of my Metallurgy Sandwich Degree course. While there I followed a project for a LARGE ships propeller in a then brand new Ni-Cu-Mn alloy called Sonoston; this was being developed for use on naval propellers, (submarines I think), The alloy had very low magnetic properties and also was acoustically "dead", you could whack it with a hammer and it was almost like hitting lead. The moulds for the props were built into the floor of the foundry and there were huge design problems as the alloy had a HUGE shrinkage rate when it cooled which made the final complex shape very hard to achieve. When machined on HUGE lathes the final fine work was done by a chap with large files and small angle grinders. Cheers Martin Amazing to watch the pour of many, many tons of metal and the dexterity of the workers also amazing. |
Thread: Telephone / Internet Scams |
10/11/2021 15:38:06 |
Here is a more unusual scam I just tumbled to: My wife listed a recliner chair on FaceBook marketplace this afternoon for £150 as we are getting a new one on Friday. We sell a lot of our heavier items on FB with no problems. After about half an hour we get a Messenger call from a guy wanting it. Says he will come tomorrow with the cash. Few minutes later comes back and says he has to work so will send a GLS courier with the cash to pick it up. Asks for our email address which she gives him. No big deal. We then get an email from “GLS’ full of crappy spelling with a dodgy looking gmail address saying they will be here tomorrow with the cash to pick up the item but we have to pay for “insurance” which we will get back on top of the £150. Told them item was now sold and to go scam someone else! Could easily see how a person might go for this if not on the look out. Cheers Martin (PS, ANYONE WANT A CHAIR?)

Hi, I meant the threaded bit at about 1 o'clock in the photo. Martin |
07/11/2021 13:01:17 |
Hi All, After a closer examination and the judicious use of gentle heat this tool came apart to reveal more tool ends! There is also a very small makers mark showing an "E" over a CROWN over the numbers 38 ? Also does the team think that the larger threaded bit is for a handle perhaps? Cheers, Martin |

Thanks to all for the help here! Vic, by all means post elsewhere. Diogenes, it certainly looks the same sort of tool I saw similar, but MUCH larger worm things on my recent trip to HMS Victory. What would the crude thread be for on the end? Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Today's early morning haul included this at the bottom of a crate of nice tools: Main part is 5" long, there is what looks like a threaded section at the top then an arm with a double worm one end and screwdriver tip at the other. The spike sits in a nice recess on the shaft and pulls out for use. There is a square recess in the end a bit like a clock key? Is it some kind of tool for an old pistol or other gun? Cheers, Martin Cheers, Martin |

ChisB, motor is 1.75kw 2 pole, have got the vfd specced from Bearing boys but am holding off paying for it just yet. this is by no means a cheap project as I am having to out source some of the work that is not feasible for me to do. Cheesr Martin |
