Gentlemen, Thank you for your time and for your advice. I’ve done a bit of reading and placed an order.
kind Regards Tom |

Glad afternoon, I am currently building an Upshur horizontal farm IC engine. The plans call for a 5/16” crankshaft. I would very much like to cut a keyway in order to secure the flywheels but cannot find a supplier for the broaching tool. Can anyone help with the name of a supplier or offer a reliable method for cutting asmall keyway. In the past I have used Grub Screws but they are at best, problematic. kind Regards Tom |

Brian, Simon, I managed to figure out what I was doing wrong. The gear leaver on the top of the gearbox was not engaged in the middle position although it looked as if it was... it was actually cutting 12 tpi instead of 24 tpi. The reason I’m cutting a fine thread is to allow me to screw cylinder liners onto the casing of my Upshur Opposed Twin four Stroke Petrol engine. I only want to start the thread so that the die will run parallel with the liner. I’m not an engineer.... only a keen amateur!! I thought this would be the best way to ensure that the thread was concentric with the bore. Regards Tom |

Hello, I’ve cut quite a few different types of imperial threads on my Myford Super 7B with success however, I now have a problem! I’m trying to cut a 1” x 24tpi UN thread… my scratch test is way out! The plate on the gearbox states “For fine feeds reverse gear on stud ‘A’ ”. I can’t find stud ‘A’. Can anyone help? Regards |

Thanks for your comments. I actually ended up settling for a window wiper motor and a PWM system. Here’s my attempt: https://youtu.be/X3IV30oOFpY

Thread: Upshur Opposed Twin |

Hello, Has anyone attempted to build Harold Upshur’s Opposed Twin Petrol engine. The crankcase is fabricated from four aluminium plates and two steel plates. I would like to change this and make it from the solid. Regards |
Thread: I/C Running on gas |

Hello, I’ve made some modifications to the carburettor but I’m not happy. I’ve fabricated a barrel at the end of the intake with a through hole so that I can have some control over the air mixture. There is a 0.100” hole running the length of the carburettor, this hole is 10% of the diameter of the bore. I’ve also set the timing is to spark just before TDC. The engine is running “lumpy” and on the verge of stalling. Can anyone suggest how I can resolve this issue? I thought that the length of the pipe from the demand valve to the carburettor may be an issue and would like to shorten it but as it appears to be crimped on this is not possible. Does anyone know where I would be able to buy this type of braided hose? The thread is M7 x 0.5. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Regards Edited By Tom Gullan on 31/05/2018 21:53:07 |

Hello, I would just like to say a big thank you for all the information that you guys gave me regarding my gas problem on the Upshur Engine. Before I start building my next engine, I thought I would make up a prototype to see if it would run on my last Petrol build. Here is the result:
The carburettor looks a bit clumsy and is only secured to a small pipe by Locktite. I intend shortening the braided pipe from the demand valve to the carburettor but as yet I have not been able to source that particular type of pipe. Does anyone know where I would be able to purchase a made to measure piece. The thread is M7 x 0.5 Tom Edited By JasonB on 30/05/2018 06:57:38 |

Hello, I recently built the Upshur Vertical Farm 4 Stroke Petrol I/C Engine (1” bore). My next project is the horizontal version of that engine but to have it running on propane gas. I purchased the diaphragm, needle jet and plans for the demand regulator from the USA. I have built the demand valve less the inlet and outlet ports. I intend using the standard propane camping gas cylinders. I am unsure as to how to go about regulating these cylinders. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have read a bit about how this is done in the USA… they have totally different standards, measurements and fittings. Regards |

Hello Kevin, I have placed numerous orders with Noggin End Metals and have never been disappointed. I have always found them to be very helpful and their meehanite cast iron in particular very good. I have no connection with the company..... I just like the way they conduct their business. Tom |

Hello, I would like to take a moment to introduce you to my first attempt at building my first I/C Petrol Engine. After building several stationary steam engines from castings (Stuart 10V and Victoria Single) and from bar stock I decided to take the plunge with Hamilton Upshur’s Farm Engine build which he drew up in 1977. Tinker John (YouTube) also built this particular engine. I bought in the camshaft/crankshaft 2:1 ratio gears, the spark plug and used electronic ignition instead of contact breaker points. I have thoroughly enjoyed this build and the challenges that went with it. To say that I was chuffed when it burst into life for the first time is an understatement… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RyIQ-ncQF7o My next build will be the horizontal version of the same engine with a unique difference. I intend running this version on propane gas. I have sourced the diaphragm and plans for the demand valve from a company in the USA and will start the build shortly. I chose this engine after researching Hamilton Upshur who I found an interesting chap and I did not want a messy 2 Stroke. I have taken lots and lots of photos of the build so if there’s anyone interested in undertaking this as a project and needs advice… just send me an email [email protected] Edited By Tom Gullan on 31/03/2018 19:09:22 Edited By JasonB on 31/03/2018 19:46:48 |
Thread: WM16 Mill Arduino Power Feed |
14/03/2018 22:01:54 |
Hello,
I recently designed a power feed on the X axis of my milling table using a wiper motor and a PWM. Everything works fine, however as yet I have not incorporated some sort of failsafe device like micro switches to stop the motor before the table reaches its maximum travel in either direction.
I am thinking of using an Arduino Uno micro computer along with some sort of sensor setup on the lead screw to count the amount of turns on the screw. I would then be able to write a program to count the turns and stop the wiper motor before the end of the travel.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has done this or who has any thoughts on how to do it.
Regards Tom |

Hello, About a year or so ago I made contact with a chap through this forum who made me ten small oilers like the one pictured for a Stuart Victoria which I was working on. Unfortunately, I no longer have contact details for this person. I have part of his address…. Clochwood, 47, LS28 7UA (could be 7VA). Can anyone help? Regards |
