Not sure whether you're inviting comments, or just casting pearls... I'm not sure either, seems a bit over-complicated? My everyday drills, 1 to 10mm by 0.1mm, are Dormer 4-facet. Imperial, number and letter drills are conventional, but don't get used that often. I expect drilled holes to be within 1 to 2 thou, usually oversize. For better accuracy I bore or ream depending on size and machine in use. It's rather sad... my Dormers are so nice, I tend to use cheaper drills so that the Dormer ones stay sharp... 🤣 Neil |

Isn't it obvious? It's an Acme Octo-Lathe. So called because it is used to turn figure-of-eight shaped work, with the centre of each lobe held by a different chuck. Neil |

One piece of information that I picked up from my sister is that when cheques are paid into the banking system, there is no check on the signatures if the cheque amount is for £1,000 or less, so any signature could be on a cheque as there is no check against the bank accounts signatory, a bit concerning as regards security of our accounts as anyone finding a cheque book could steal from us. Dave W No always... my dad wrote me a much smaller cheque about a year ago as I'd bought something on his behalf. The bank bounced it as signature not matching. They wouldn't allow it to be resubmitted even after talking to him. It was the first cheque he'd written for years and said there was no point in them getting a new signature on file as by the time he writes the next one he'll be even older and his signature will be even more random. In the end, we sorted it in other ways. Neil

Thread: Will they honour these prices, I wonder |
07/12/2022 10:00:14 |
It's always worth looking at CPC. CPC often has a lower minimum order quantity and the price per unit is sometimes cheaper. In the past, it's paid to split an order beyween Farnell and CPC! Note: Farnell prices reflect being able to access traceability/QA certificates etc. required for critical applications etc. which are not required for domestic/hobby use. Neil |

Thread: Readers' Tips Wanted ASAP!!! |
02/12/2022 10:50:40 |
I discover that, perhaps due to my change of email, I have run low on readers' tips! So... if you have a great but simple workshop tip you have a great chance of being a winner. Email me 100 to 200 words and 2-3 photos. No guarantees but I'm looking for a winner in the next few days and if you don't get chosen your tip will be kept for possible use in a later issue. Thanks Neil
We have £30 in gift vouchers courtesy of engineering suppliers Chester Machine Tools for each month's 'Top Tip'. Email your workshop tips to [email protected] marking them 'Readers Tips', and you could be a winner. Try to keep your tip to no more than 600 words and a picture or drawing. Don’t forget to include your address! Every month I'll choose a selection for publication and the one chosen as Tip of the Month will win £30 in gift vouchers from Chester Machine Tools. Visit www.chesterhobbystore.com to plan how to spend yours! Please note that the first prize of Chester Vouchers is only available to UK readers. You can make multiple entries, but we reserve the right not to award repeat prizes to the same person in order to encourage new entrants. All prizes are at the discretion of the Editor. |

To answer the question. Yes i do enjoy sitting in the workshop. It's not very big but well insulated, so does not take much Lecky to get it warmed up. At this time of year have a dehumidifier left on 24/7. Although it does not come on much but in the last week has produced about 4 litres of water. I do confess to looking at the Mill & Lathe more than i use them. Steve. The dehumidifier seems to help keep frost at bay with good insulation. |

Do you ever find yourself just sat in the workshop enjoying your own space? Don't have much I can do til another tool arrives lest setups be disturbed, so just sat here with some easy rock, a smoke and a beer feeling utterly at peace. Ought to do this more often, I've come up with several ideas for next phases and methods for future setups... Bliss! J Very much! Clears my brain even if I don't get much done. Neil |
Thread: Workshop going into storage - Rust Prevention? |
21/11/2022 15:24:58 |
I stored my workshop in a container for 18 months. I had minimal problems, but I:
Out as much as possible into sealed plastic boxes (in dry weather) Used anti-rust treatment on slideways, and used water dispersing oil on less critical items. Wrapped machine tools in many metres of VCI paper. Put a large tub of dehumidifier crystals in the container. Avoided opening the container in wet weather. Opened it for a change of air about once every month or two.
Hope that's useful,
Neil |

My brothers are taking me to Bovington Tank Museum later in the week as a post-birthday celebration. Last time the three of us went the youngest was little more than a babe in arms and stayed in the car with his nan! My other brother remembers seeing attempts to start one of the WWI tanks, I just remember lots of tanks... Yes, I am as excited as the little kid was back in 19-mumble. Neil |
