Thread: Is Model Engineering "green"? |
29/11/2021 07:37:50 |
Hi everyone, I have been wondering about this for some time, obviously not just model engineering but in general what we get up to in our workshops. I realise there are many ways to approach this to justify our "green - ness" and how our activities don't have any affect on the environment. I suppose an extreme would be a treadle lathe used during daylight in a unheated shed, turning bits of wood!... All this is up for discussion of course and we are in the "tea room" !...unlimited virtual bourbon, digestive and custard cream biccies are available. Very interested to hear your views.... Thread: Parvalux motors |

I contacted Parvalux UK (Birmingham) recently and I found them very helpful regarding specifications of certain motors. They sent pdf's of drawings, dimensions etc, very useful. A new motor was too expensive though...! Derek |

Hi recently contacted Parvalux for a price for a 2800rpm, 3 ph SD28........Glad I was sat down when I looked at the quote....over £500 Regards Derek |

I remember John raising the standard of the ME and always ensured that there was a large variety of projects and interesting information in every issue. A sad loss, my condolences to all his family and friends

Thread: Digital subscription offer |
25/11/2021 03:33:13 |
Hi Just had an email saying I can subscribe to the digital version of ME for £10 per year and also the same offer for MEW. This seems a really good offer, but would it give me access to the archive and in this era where flash has been withdrawn do they open ok on a tablet and can you print out an article for use in a workshop? If the answer to my questions is yes then it seems a great offer to me, but is it to good to be true in this world of scammers I am always suspicious..... Regards to all Derek |
Thread: Enclosure for Inverter |
14/11/2021 16:21:21 |
Thanks for all the replies.....Robert, I never thought of a wooden enclosure...! Regards to all Derek |
14/11/2021 12:34:13 |
Hi Just wondering what would be a suitable enclosure for an inverter? I have a small 3 ph parvalux 190w motor that I wired up to a suitable inverter. All working fine. I plan to use external stop, start and forward/reverse buttons on the outside of a suitable enclosure instead of the small controls directly on the inverter itself. However I have seen pics on here and elsewhere of inverters just hanging on a wall near the machine, complete with exposed terminals ....this seems very unsafe! So I was thinking about putting the inverter in an enclosure but should it be plastic or steel?, and what about suitable ventilation as inverters tend to get warm? Would a steel enclosure act as a heat sink for example? Looking forward to suggestions Kind regards Derek

Thread: Grinding Spindle |

Hi John Thanks for reply, looks like the Quorn spindle is the way to go. Kind regards Derek |
12/11/2021 18:41:00 |
Hi, I am currently building my Quorn and have reached the stage of making the grinding spindle assembly. However I was wondering if anyone has built Mr D Broadley's grinding spindle (available as a kit from Hemingway Tools) and wondered if this would be an easier and possibly better option? Kind regards Derek |

I did the top slide clamp by GHT years ago, well worthwhile, in fact anything by GHT is worth making. I converted my non power crossslide myford S7 last year following his guidance, so much better than the original friction dials. Regards Derek |
Thread: Sewage dumping |

Hi Further to Dave Shield 1.. I joined A W in 1978 and left many years later and I can confirm that most equipment was installed in the 1950's....the new stuff that replaced it was worse... |

Hi, I used to work for Anglian Water some 27 years ago in the "lumpy water" department, in those days sewage treatment works were design to operate at a maximum of 3 x "dry weather flow". In other words once incoming flow had exceeded 3 x dwf then any excess ended up in the river....untreated... Some larger treatment works did have storm water tanks that intercepted this extra high flow and then got treated when it was possible, but this was the exception and they did fill up quickly. But this was a long time ago, probably different now. Regards Derek |

Thanks for the link MichaelG I was just surprised how quick the delivery was...I was expecting a week or so...as you say Circlip, life won't end if you run out of a bit of round 1/2 ins BMS for a couple of weeks !
The ebay offcut was free delivery, yet it arrived next day. I didn't even know what it was at first!!! All the best Derek |

Hi all, Not sure if this is the right place, but I thought we were going to have a dedicated place where we could recommend suppliers? Anyway just want to share my experiences with you. Last Thursday I sent an email with a small list of material requirements (steel, brass etc), a couple of hours later Lynn emailed me the quote as well as a link to their ebay shop of off cuts. I subsequently ordered an offcut from their ebay shop on Friday and it arrived Saturday! I then phoned Monday and confirmed and paid for my main order, and it arrived Wednesday! Both parcels arrived despite the current fuel problems and driver shortages. So I can fully recommend M-Machine metals....and no I am not the MD, just a happy customer who will always use them in the future. All the best to you all Derek |
Thread: Myford super 7 with gearbox - leadscrew stopped turning |
24/08/2021 10:04:04 |
Posted by John Haine on 24/08/2021 09:56:33:
Look guys, the headstock mandrel drives the gearbox through a tumbler reverse arrangement which has two settings with a "neutral" in between. If it wasn't firmly engaged in one of the drive positions it could easily slide back into "neutral". From the OP's description it was working fine before going away and drinking the coffee, unlikely to have had a crash when he was drinking it! Edited By John Haine on 24/08/2021 09:56:44 Hi John, ok I maybe read it wrong, but I read it as "it worked ok, I left it under power/screwcutting, while making coffee came back and now not working..." As you suggest it could be the tumbler lever or it could be either gear selector lever on the gearbox not fully engaged. Either way I may have got hold of the wrong end of the stick....and not for the first time! Regards Derek

Hi Ramon, What a shame...! I suppose it comes to all of us that there will be projects that we are going to be unable to complete or lose the initial enthusiasm Looks like the Bentley is almost complete though! Shame that you cannot finish it. I would love to be able to complete it, but not sure I can maintain your build quality! Kind regards Derek |

I know its after the event, but I was taught never leave any machine alone on "auto" feed... I suspect that the carriage has crashed at some point and broken something. I have a Myford S7 with gearbox, I will have a look at the drawing and booklet to see if there is any mention of a shear pin. Regards

Thread: DIY Compression spring |
10/08/2021 07:34:33 |
Hi everyone, Just after some advice, I have made the spring winding tool from Hemingway Tools and it works very well when making some practice springs. Now the spring I need to make is a simple compression spring for the front bar on the Quorn grinder. I have made one that looks reasonably ok, I made it out of music wire and the correct swg, so my question is do I need to heat treat it? Hemingway's instructions say I should temper it in the domestic oven for an hour at such and such temperature....that's fine the wife is at work today!, but interestingly Tubal Cain (aka Tom Walshaw) in his book about springs makes no mention of any heat treatment after creating a spring... So heat treat (temper) after making a spring or not? Thanks Derek
