Ok about. Renewables, I have solar power, it is great, nothing to do with saving the plant, all the money I generate goes to my workshop, starting to build up nice wee shop. Thanks to the government keep up the good work |

Hi Allan good you are back, hope this thread goes well, I did enjoy you other threads, sorry I can not help with your issues in the build, due to lack on knowledge on my part. Apart from the learning, your thread has inspired me to get workshop back up and running, started with this posted a couple of photos, but I have a classic car, which is taking up a good chunk of my time at present.
Keep up the good work and I will keep popping in to see your progress, workshop every day!!!! I do envy you

Hi Allan please keep the thread going, regarding Nicks comment it was not bad, he did suggest a valid issue, being inexperienced myself, I was thinking the same thing. Think the best way forward is to only make comments on your project, if Nick had worded it " are you using a three or four jaw chuck to hold your reamer" none of the toys would have been thrown out of the pram. Don't let this spoil a great thread, I am learning so much

Rollo Engineering Falkirk may be worth giving them a call |

Hi Allan been great reading the story of the build, you have inspired me to get my workshop up and running. Over the winter there, not cold but very wet and windy, could not get myself of the chair to do something, the more I read the more I wanted to do, so apart from helping me pick up some tips, you also helped me get motivated ( a bit of depression if I am true to myself) Workshop not fully up yet, but working on sports car, hope to have it on road start of April, only small job on grear box , reversing light sensor, but need to take central console and bit of dash to get to it.
big thanks

Hi David I am a just starting out in this hobby, I know the series you started need to start somewhere and I am fine with that, setting up a shed is not an issue to me due to my background but it will be for other, so I can see why you started there. I am looking forward to setting up lathes ect and how these should be used, some articles in the mag are beyond me at present. A good balance between each skill level is required, I would also suggest this forum could be used to assist the articles, where experienced members could give further comment as required , or other points of view. This could help keep the article compact
coalburner can you tell me your definition of competent ? I play classical guitar as a hobby, at grade 5 I am competent, grade 6 and 7 ok grade 8 not very good, or do I need to be able to play every bit of music written to be competent. Competent to me is all relative to you skill level, I could be a competent novice player, or intermediate , advanced or concert player.
on saying the above I must say I have signed up for six months and at present I am not sure if I will renew, I am not convinced I am getting value for money, I read these forum more and have picked up more tip ect here than in the mag

Thread: Re-starting after a number off years |

Thanks Allan, I painted the garage floor with floor paint make a big difference in the dust, I am lucky has the heating system is in the garage, and I installed a radiator in here, rest of house is underfloor heating but the radiator at low temp is fine, no rust issues at all. starting to get all tools ect out of storage half the thing I can not remember having, I am like a kid in a sweet shop, found some of my grandfathers tools, must be coming up to 75 to 100 years old. Getting nothing done but organising the work shop, before the garden starts again. Never mind it is all good fun

Hi the kitchen units worked out the cheapest, just did some reinforcement with 3x2 timber left over from the house, good thing about it was able to claim my vat back so a further 20% off. No work done as last summer working in the garden, winter completing some cupboards ect in the house, last few week started opening boxes for the workshop and started to place lathe and mill.
i found one of the hardest things is getting started, this is where this forum has been good, I found a set of v clamp castings in a box think this will be my first project, also found a set of casting for a engine can't even remember buying them, may have to photo them post them here to see what they are.
also get tha cannon constructed. |

I started model engineering about 18 years ago, after building a couple of wooden plank on plank ships. Started setting up workshop, purchased lathe and milling machine, at this time started a new job, ( Stress level through the roof) spent more time done in workshop trying to keep rust of the tools, did very little. promised my son I would build him a cannon, think he was about 7 told him as a joke it would be done by the time he was 21, he is now 22 about to be come 23 cannon no where to be seen, possible start another thread like Allan on the biuld.
In-between time got further promotion, more stress, purchased a plot of land, took 3and a bit years to build my own house, worked night weekend and holidays but it is completed now, well the garden still to be done. however started to set up a workshop in the garage, see photos. Mill heavy so I have constructed a frame within the kitchen units. The drawer tool chest is only there I always wanted one . |

Sorry hate the spelling change in this ipad, Above post should read, "if it is to re-read best to "

Sorry why would you need to print the completed mag,? If it is reframe best to keep it digital takes up no space.
if you buy the digital mag you will always have access, even if you drop your subscription, let the supplier store them. I download to my I pad read then delete, if I want to re-read just down load again.
what I think would be good is the series in each mag could be linked, so if you want the complete series, and you had pu head the mag over the period, this could be downloaded as one separate document

Hi reading through this link, don't see the fuss, if you subscribe for a period you will always have digital access to these mags, the back copies viewed through the site, as long as you are subscribed.
i also subscribe to a garden mag and get no access to back copies, so this is a bonus here.
comments about paper copies, I bought the very first MEW, long gone now, however re-read it a couple of nights ago via the site for me digitalis is the way forward, no book, mag paper laying about taking up space jim |

Hi Allan thanks for the post, I used to have a small workshop, years ago before family, then never had time or money, just completed building my own house, at started to set up my workshop, with my old equipment ( never had the heart to sell it) even when times got hard, now glad I held on when you see today's prices.
To the point your article has inspired me to get a move on and get the workshop up and running, then think what I will build, started a cannon years ago told my son he would get this when he was 21 he was only 5 at the time, he is now 23 and still does not have the cannon, think this should be high up on the list.
problem is I am not very good, used to build model wooden boats from scratch, always wanted to work in metal, find it more of a challenge but that's the fun, glad to here other make same mistakes as me, sometimes you read article and everything is great nothing goes wrong. Thanks for your courage to publish warts and all, keep up this good work
