Thanks for the advice Ian I finally found time to pull the bottom part of the gear train of and sure enough there it was another shear pin, but this one was in to half’s so I made a new one quick sharp 3mm x 11mm I think it was, now everything’s working as it should, just have to get used to working in metric but so far so good.

AS it would appear people on here seem to know a lot obout the master 2500 I dont suppose anyone knows what the part number is for the Oil pump for the main tank Item number 74000-0 (79-897 in the hand book. page 9.

Not in the Colchester Master 2500: The lubrication of the "Master 2500" headstock reflected the harder work the lathe was intended to undertake (in comparison with the 1800) and was taken care of by an impellor-type pump mounted on a oil tank fitted inside the headstock-end plinth and driven from an extension to the main-motor spindle; from the tank the oil was taken to a "distributor block" fastened beneath the headstock's top cover and from there by pipes to the required locations. A flow-indicator sight-glass was fitted to the front headstock face to allow the operator to check that oil was flowing correctly.

why is it so difficult to find out the sizes of the sight glasses without taking them out! I would like to replace them at the same time but I know as soon as I take them out to measure I will need the lathe ...lol

Hi Alex , there is usually a plate somewhere on the back on machines to say what oils to use , but ii can tell you that in our shop at work where we had 4 Colchesters two Triumph 2000 and two Master 2500 lathes the boss always used Shell Tellus 68 oil in the headstocks and none of them ever gave trouble in the 15 yrs i was there , a lot of makes do similar spec oils like for example the Esso Nuto series , ARC Eurotrade sell Rock Oil 32 and 68 machine oils but only in 1 litre bottles i think , i am going to get some 68 myself to put in my Harrison L5 headstock , my boss usually got the 25 litre oil cans from Cromwell Tools as he had a trade account with them.

So do I assume from this I could use. Shell Tellus S2 VX 68 would be fine for the gearbox AND the ways?

The link to lathes.co.uk says the taper is 23 degrees. I don't know if the spindle is bored for a draw bar. If it is then making an adaptor to use ER collets may be an option.

yes it does have a draw bar fitted. Its a very solid mill but I had a bridge port complate with tooling come up so I stopped worying about it. It reminded me when I read the thread about turning tapers. lol

No mate its a vertical with a spurious non standard taper.

I realise this is a ancient thread but I am in need of creating some tapers I can use for tools on a small but very very rigid Taylor milling machine. What would the process be to create these please??

But yes the cutter fits to the mill using a draw bar..

I have uploaded a chart which shows.......if i am measuring things correctly.....that its close to a number 10 jarno and possibly a brown and sharpe. But the length does not match up.

I suppose it would be more accurate to see if anyone can identify the taper.....i guess. This is what lathes.co.uk has on it....a bit vague. While very early versions of the Mk. 1 had plain bearings fitted to both the main spindle and the various jockey pulleys and countershaft later models had ball races throughout leading to much easier running and far less power loss. It is almost certain that the miller would have been offered with a variety of spindle nose fittings and examples have been found with a No. 2 Morse, Brown & Sharpe and Jarno tapers - and also, incredibly, a plain bore. Almost certainly in line with the change to anti-friction bearings the spindle was further modified with a 26? taper to accept direct-mounting "double-split" collets of a type not dissimilar to the modern "ER" type. When the Mk. 2 was introduced at some point in the 1930s a change was made to a lower bronze bearing and an upper ball race.

It is a cutter in the photo. I need to identify what it is in terms of what collet would fit my milling machine.

Its a taylor and was sold with various options.

I am aware that this is a cutter but its all i got with the machine and i need collets to make it useable.

If its a 2.2KW inverter most can handle loads 150% higher for x amount of time.
Therefore 3.3KW 3ph possible.
 
As stated my inverters hard wired from 240V single ph direct feed on its own 32A RCD. The 5KW inverter running 400V i could easilly get the spindle to slow, same with a Transwave rotary convertor 5.5KW. My rare motor has the equivalent of trying to start a 9HP one.
My other 7.5KW output inverter 3ph 400V i cant get the spindle to slow, so far on same machine.
Fair enough i was putting a bit of a cut on to actually register over 5KW on single ph 240V supply. A smaller machine would use same electric over a longer period so dont let that put you off. Took it up to well over £1.50+/hr actual usage in the past, it will be interesting what this translates to in 240V single ph kw, ill let you know.
 
Maybe this is down to the make and design of the inverter. Hope i havent open up a can of worms but i would dearly love to know.
