Thread: 4 jaw chuck jaw numbering

Just mark 2 opposing positions with a center punch mark,. no need to mark all 4 positions, unless you really struggle to remember the last jaw you adjusted.

I had some slices of the hot finished seamless tube off them (to make tyres for my 5" gauge Castle) around six months ago and cannot fault their service for such a small order (to them).

John, re-read my post about a thick washer. It covers all the original posters requirements, also introduces the difference between Forming and Generating as a bonus and the big plus is it's all possible within the time frame.

My interpretation of the original posting is that this is a "one off" hour or two and so anything other than very basic or simple would not be possible.

A simple thick washer?

I would set the topslide to 45 Deg at the start (to save time later) and use a 45 deg approach tool, then :-

1) Turn O.D.

2) Face

3) Form a small chamfer on the outside edge

(All the above done with the same tool. Hence the 45 Deg approach tool)

4) C.Drill & Drill

5) Bore

6) Generate rather than form a chamfer on the bore using topslide and boring tool

7) Part off (probably best with the rear toolpost if available)

Various other forums actively block links to other sites and so replacing some of these sites title letters with characters, defeats the auto blocking.

Just to confirm my choice of oil viscosity, Hiwin (as fitted to my machine) recomend Mobilgear 630 for standard use. See page 27 of this document:-

Idealy use an ISO 68 Slideway oil for any Horizontal surfaces and screws, then use an ISO 220 Slideway oil for the Vertical surfaces and screws. I use the ISO 220 Slideway in the automatic oiler fitted to my Syil X5 Plus. This lubes all the linear rails AND the ball screws.

The standard method to form the seat, was to use a standard hardened steel ball (obviously of the same diameter) first and not the soft stainless steel ones.

Save the stainless steel (or bronze) balls for use in service.

Hi Jochen,

Probably there for it to fit both the Long and Short cross slides, in various positions along the same (because of the varying T-Slot spacing along the both slides).

Thread: Windows 10 forced upgrade
22/05/2016 11:34:10
Posted by Steve Withnell on 17/05/2016 19:39:07:

I updated our machines to Windows 10 + the installed version of Office. It all works very well and I have to say well done. However. The Windows 10 updates are heavy duty - the biggest was 5GB+ and you have to take them. These GB sized 'updates' look like every other month.

You cannot un-install Internet Explorer. You can disable it, but it still gets the mandatory updates and grabs a 5MB cache from somewhere.

I've already related that my Dad's 'free' broadband is now £10 a month because the W10 updates alone, breach his usage cap twice a quarter.

Another sneaky trick is that the updates try to avoid using the MS servers. So you can get your update from my machine on a P2P basis (not now you can't - switched that off that 'feature' off). On the plus side, if the update has hit my laptop, other machines on the local network don't need to download updates across the broadband connection.

At least MS promise not to read the content of your eMails (well they did last year...).

Steve

Hi Steve,

Have a look in W10 Settings - Network & internet - WiFi - Advanced Options. There is an option for Metered Connection that may help your father.

Terry,

I don't know about the smaller types, but the two Colchester 2500's I use at work, are fitted with one Genuine Swiss Multifix toolpost including 5 genuine holders and one copy toolpost, with 5 copy holders. The holders swap around between the two without any problem.
