Thread: Myford Taper Turning Attachement |
28/01/2016 18:07:07 |
Rod Don't bother making one, I have one here .... After all afternoon ferretting amongst all the Myford bits I still have a different sort of arrangement to connect from the guider wotsit to the cross-slide .. I'll e-mail you a pic. of the bits I have left over now I've got mine together like Simon's and yours ....

How interesting. I have a TTA with my S7 and for some perverse reason I have two of those 'Triangular Casting with a Slot, a Hole and two Locating Dowels' doins. It appears to have once been Myford green and is now sloshed over with grey paint. Just about visible is a # 73/1931 ?? Dave I would insert pics. if I were on any other Forum but this one seems to have a crackpot arrangement which I don't intend to mess around with. Edited By Dave Daniels on 25/01/2016 14:49:30 |
Thread: Sourcing a small spring |

If you download the 'Polly' catalogue, there is a list of stainless spring stock in 12" lengths on P58 (?) Maybe something there suitable ? D.

Thread: replacement motor brushes WEISS mill (champion 20v) |
02/01/2016 10:55:30 |
IF !! it's the same 600W motor as a Warco WM16 it's these :
I think Warco charge a fair bit more for what appear to be the same brushes.

Bit baffled by this. Right click on image > Properties ... tells you it's a water clock
Maybe I'm too simplistic ?? .. and completely missed the piont

Thread: 1000w Induction Heater |
24/11/2015 18:03:36 |
Chris No, but I did make this: just for fun about a year ago and it does work. Video a bit tiresome to listen to, but soldier on. Your coil seems a bit odd though. Do the turns really touch each other? They shouldn't ! Your device looks a bit similar to this: https://markobakula.wordpress.com/power-electronics/500w-royer-induction-heater/ which I might have a go at as it avoids the irritating centre-tap ...

Thread: 13A Plug / Socket |
11/08/2015 21:51:59 |
Further enquiries indicate that it is indeed of MK origin, the line pin is at 90 deg. to normal. So all my babbling about D & S items was wide of the mark by some way ...
Many thanks for the interest, Dave |

Just had an intense conversation with a friend who is a time-served electrician ( retd.) about a 'strange' 13A socket. I haven't seen the item but it may be what I knew as a D&S or D.N.S. socket? He says he's never heard of them. Now I'm not sure. Cannot find any reference to the on the net . IIRC they were used to stop dreadful things like vacuum cleaners being plugged into clean supplies ? What were they really called?

I'm not sure but I think EXCEL at Coventry re-badge Optimum mills as their own brand. Worth a look. ?? http://www.excelmachinetools.co.uk/manual-mills/4/light-duty-drill-mill/148/index.html

You can get rainbow or grey flat cable from most suppliers ie. Rapid, CPC. Farnell, RS etc. but mostly on reels .... ESR appear do grey cable by the foot it seems ??? Bearing in mind, you may need an IDC crimp tool for some connectors. D.

There was a steam motorbike used to do the rounds of the vintage shows, I saw it a couple of times. Can't remember the details though.
Maybe this one ? Been at some VMCC functions.

Thread: Rubber Insulated Cable |
05/04/2015 09:57:40 |
Rubber sheathed/ insulated cable does not have to be old. I used it about 10 yrs ago and it still appears to be available from the same supplier by the looks of it. From very vague memory it can tolerate a sharper bend radius and maybe lower temp. than PVC but I'm not certain. Don't care now anyway ....

Are B9A valve bases still obtainable? I have some new valves I kept from 40 years ago I'd like to play with. Ken
Still get them several places .. eg: **LINK** Only a few years since I dumped all my err 'stock' ?? ECLL800's, EF86, ECC83, EL34, KT66, 2D21 ( thyratron IIRC ), 25L6 and God only knows what else. Not much idea if they were good or dud. Once had a Mullard valve tester but all the programme card wotsits were for every damn valve in creation except the ones I had so that got heaved onto the WEEE heap at the local tip.
All that nostalgia gone forever ..

Jason Which machines ?
I fixed 2 Wimshurst Machines ages ago and they certainly did touch the sectors. Both the neutraliser and collector brushes. One had raised 'domes' to take the brush contact. Bonettis should not touch but the spark length drops rapidly with increasing disc- brush gap so they need to be very close as you say with a serrated edge. My Bonetti was made with 6mm Polycarbonate discs which were not particularly flat so I made the neutraliser and collector 'blades' from the conductive bags and let them actually touch the discs very lightly. Dave
Just remembered the manufacturer of the one with 'domed sectors ' Here is a pic. somewhat better looking than the one I resurrected ... http://www.antiques-atlas.com/antique/wimshurst_machine/as172a045

Gordon .. No need for metallic neutraliser brushes. On my Bonetti I used a bit of the black conductive plastic bags I get chips [ ic chips ] in. As a Bonetti has no sectors, they don't tend to rip up the disc surface. So long as there is a reasonably conductive path between the brushes, they will work fine. Well, mine did anyway. Could get 7-8" sparks from a 16" machine. Should, in theory do rather better than that though, but Bonettis are more sensitive to humidity than Wimshursts. Dave.

Thread: What metal could this be? |
01/08/2014 21:42:34 |
I worked on multi-platter disks at IBM in the late '60s & '70's. ish EG types 2311, 2314, 3340 which had linear actuators. There were a lot of other manufacturers like Memorex, Raytheon, Telex [?] etc. Piccy would be nice A sort of sintered material was used on some machines for wearing surfaces. For some reason 'Carballoy' springs to mind but whether this is significant in your case I don't know. Dave

For DAG, i went out there in March 1960 and worked at Eastliegh RAF Station. I was attached to the 236 ComCan REME Workshops mainly doing Creed Printers and sundry maintenance on Receivers and the Transmitters. I left just after they got their Independence as the station closed down very quickly. Ended up in Catterick doing technical Inspections as far up as Coldsatream and West to Cumbria and South to York. Visiting every military Unit in that area. Clive
I was in the RAF Com-Cen at Eastleigh from Nov. 1963 until Apr. 1965 doing much the same thing .... If I remember the KAF had some of the Com-Cen for their stuff and some of us moved over into what was your building.
