I have a fair interest in this sort of thing:

One of the stoppers ( ? ) is the difficulty of getting Silicon Iron laminations or Soft Iron.

Tried some years ago but got nowhere.

One educational supplies site actually listed 3/8" soft iron rods but were actually mild steel when quizzed.

Unless someone knows where the stuff can be obtained in smallish quantities.

Doesn't have to penetrate ... I've used it to get adhesive heat shrink off. If you can get an edge it appears to creep in and destroy the bond.

Not a quick job I admit, but it worked.

Relatively cheap to try it. If it doesn't work you still have the can for attacking sticky labels.

You might try something like 'Label Off' spray.

I get it from Rapid Electronics but no doubt similar stuff is available elsewhere.

Fairly benign, I've used to to get the damn sticky labels of plastic stuff many times and it does not seem to affect them.

A year or so ago I bought some L297 chips from China, like these:

Not that seller IIRC but some £3 for 10, P&P Incl.

Duly arrived, Postie demanded some £11 ( I think ) to release ... told him contents were worth £3 and said to take them away and dump them. About 10 days later they were shoved through the letterbox.

As these things are currently some £9 a pop from Farnell I didn't have much confidence but worth a punt for 30p.

And they do seem to work fine.

I have had other cheapo stuff from China delivered OK. No idea why that delivery went wrong ??

As an aside to this 'LCD no werky' thing, if you get an 'X-Temp' or extended temperature range device, the bottom end of the contrast pot. has to go to a negative voltage not to 0V as usual. I don't know if this pertains to ALL X-Temp displays but did to 4 I was given.

I've been in that hole, and it ain't at all obvious until a severe shufti at the data sheet reveals the pot. goes to -V ... not 0V.

Can be a -5V derived from the +5V using a ICL7660 chip

Whether all Proxxon lathes do I don't know, that's the only reference I found. ( Just knew Farnell sold them & they give country of origin for products they sell ).

( Isn't Luxembourg where Junckers orginates ? Maybe not much of a recommendation then eh ?      )

Have to agree with Clive re: the average motor cycle mechanic, in general they just used to faff with them until they sort-of worked .. no real idea of what was required. But then most of their employers just wanted to sell new or B90 (?) replacement units.

I had some 6-7 years trouble free Internet with Tiscali .. and then it became Talktalk ...

That's when the crap started ... Line dropouts, no broadband, reset router etc. etc. etc.

Went on for months off and on ...

'Engineer' came and fitted new router, didn't work so he disappeared for 3 days and having spent 3 lifetimes on their useless phone line another engineer came and fitted another new router which sort of worked, for a day or so, then back to situation normal ie,. no Internet.

Problems apparently caused by internal sockets / wiring / filters etc. etc. ie. Any damn thing you like except Talktalk ..

So, in Dec. 2013 I dumped the incompetent Goons and went to PlusNet.

Ever since then my apparently shaky set-up has worked quite well for some reason ...

I knew the code as Murray Code, maybe it's the same thing? IIRC the sequence was often CR-LF-L/S-L/S to give the delay for the C.Ret.

One book I have Is pretty good for analogue etc. Not as erudite as A of E ( which I also have ) but much more 'holdy-handy'

Gives all the useful info. on op-amps, Schmitt Triggers, comparators etc. etc. but in a more pictorial form than the A of E.

I have a WM16 and it is somewhat noisy. Not the sort of machine to use in a multi occupancy building.

The SX3 is much quieter but weighs in a fair bit above your £1k.

This one also does but it may be quieter than a WM16:

Looks similar in spec. to a belt drive WM16 on first glance and also may have R8 which would be an asset IMHO, but this option is OOS at the moment.

I have 2.0D XC , from new on a 15 plate. Just done about 6k now.

I have arthritis of the spine and I find it very good indeed to drive.

Don't do too many short runs, my MPG is 49.3 at the moment.

Working out the miles and diesel put in the car computer wotsit seems to be accurate to pessimistic. I think it does 52.1 ?

Faultless on delivery and still is.

I have several Quick-Wedge screw starters of various sizes. Last replaced one about 18 months ago from here:

That looks very much like my long gone Cytringhan Bantam welder.

IF it is you can use it on 1 Ph. 240V. I did on a 16A supply but you can't get the full grunt from it.

The 415V is obtained between 2 phases, not 3 IIRC. but not certain.

You may get some confirmation by searching for Cytringhan Bantam info.

Beware! The oil may have PCB's in it ... if it's ancient

I have used them on small screws but on the smaller UNF/UNC screws. I do know they work on 2-56 UNF but I suppose it depends on the slot width. Never knowingly used them on the BA sizes you mention.

Light output for a filament lamp is given by Volts ^ 3.4 .

So, a 5% reduction in voltage will drop the light output by some 16%.

It will obviously rise by 16% for a 5% overvoltage.

Not sure but I think light output is directly proportional to filament temperature.
