Thread: Black5 with a flat tyre!
20/04/2021 19:29:37

The skate was probably used to get the loco and tender to the nearest road access point apart from requiring a a 25 mph path which if your lucky is an after midnight job. Also If the skate was to run hot or worse collapse during its trip in the first instance skate parts are required and in the 2nd there could be damage to the tender and the rail Network. If you look at the risks involved then this was good risk management. One thing that also needs considering with wheel flat movement is the temperature because large flats and low temperatures can result in broken rails. There is a group standard that covers flat length in a 2 axis chart axle weight x flat length = permitted max speed.

That’s a standard MK 2 BR railway skate set on loco width tread. The 4 side plates grip the tyres of the wheel set . The 2 holes in the middle of the side plate allow a dowled spacer to be added to allow it to grip the reduced the tread width of C & W wheel sets. The bearing is in the middle of each wheel . The wheels can be carried to site on a tee shaped handle and are very heavy they are held apart by a spacer tube that does not rotate because it has no an axle. Maximum speed 25 mph on plain track and 5 mph on points and crossings. Stop every every 5 miles or so for bearing temperature checks and a regressing of the bearings after 15/20 miles. When skate is retrieved check and adjust bearing play and regressed for next time. There is always a rider with the rolling stock being recovered the wheels a 25 MPH look like Catherine wheels he is there both to carry the above checks and gently remind the driver of the speed limits and ensure if it’s a driven wheel being carried that it’s motor is isolated along with the appropriate bogie wheel or wheel set brakes!

Thread: What is running-in oil?
11/03/2021 00:04:48

Not sure which sort of lubrications is used on the Merrywheather hydrostatic or mechanical for the cylinders ? I know this not a locomotive but standard running in practice was to set the oil feeds to maximum on the lubricators check the bearing temperatures and oil levels frequently and when it’s felt the engine had run in ease off or restrict the oil feeds as required.

Thread: You think you have trouble starting your car on a cold morning?
16/02/2021 22:28:13

The starting issue with class 50 and. All English engines of the 1960’s Is that the pistons shrink in cold weather and grip there piston rings thus allowing fuel into the sump and sump oil out via the exhaust valves. Creating a smog of large proportions until the engine has warmed up and the rings come out to contact the cylinder liner. Locomotives that are fitted we pre heaters as many are now do not have the issue!

Thread: Phase convertor problems
21/11/2017 16:52:48

Clive I a running at the convectors maximum out put at 5,5 hp.so is a pilot motor an option still an option ? I tried tricking the convertor by staring up the 3 phase coolant pump first on the lathe which runs ok but when you start the lathe main motor in either 3 or 5 hp setting its back to the alarming contactor bouncing until the lathe picks up speed,

Nathan at the moment I am prepared to give anything ago so thanks for that John

.

Gentlemen thank you for your reply's it is a static convertor so I guess I will have to come up with another plan to run the lathe before the invertor expires.

20/11/2017 01:12:05

I returned it and they say no fault found from there service department . They are saying its not faulty hence the question,

Earlier this year I purchased a 3 phase convertor to run a 13 inch Harrison lathe, the lathe has 2 speed motor which give 5,5 and 3 HP respectively. which the invertor is rated for. The problem starts when stating the lathe is a contactor in the invertor bounces violently in and out 4 or 5 times on both motor settings before the invertor settles down to run the lathe motor. I had seen the lathe run before I bought it, indeed the invertor runs the lathes own coolant pump. And although smaller runs both my myford and my milling machine ok. The instructions say to wire the started across L1 & L3 phases I have checked these and they are wired correctly. but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any idea how to cure this please ?

Thread: Drawing/castings for 5 inch gauge " Peveril¬
14/09/2017 21:38:27

Hi John

There at least 11 drawings in the Peveril drawing set as drawn for 5 inch gauge. As some one who models the I.O.M 15mm scale I can tell you there is lot of plate work on the Beyer peacocks, I have most if not all of the drawings and will try and look them out next week
