Thread: Silver Soldering LG2
05/06/2020 09:36:25

Hi Andrew, lead in leaded metals is what is known as 'free lead', ie it is not alloyed but like currents in a cake. As a consequence because of it's low melting temp when brazing it melts and comes to the surface which inhibits brazing alloy flow.

As said here it can be silver brazed but we recommend opening up the joint gap slightly to allow more alloy in thereby combating any flow problems.

Hope this helps but if not please feel free to call us.

Thread: New to brazing and soldering during lockdown?
14/05/2020 08:52:10

During these times of isolation and lockdown we are being encouraged to learn a new skill, be that a foreign language or, say, juggling (??). From the number of starter pack orders we have received lately it looks like several are taking up brazing, whether that be a new model engineer or hobbyist. Great news I feel. We at CuP Alloys have always tried to develop new ideas to support the hobbyist, whether it be attending exhibitions, having special offers like last week or just offering good, old fashioned advice. We have therefore looked at packages for those wanting to try brazing. We now have on the website www.cupalloys.co.uk an EF Starter Package consisting of the EF Starter Pack with the Brazing Handbook by Keith Hale priced £30, a saving of over £4 if bought separately. We are also considering other packages, eg Starter Package 2 an EF Starter Package plus a Sievertt 2197 Professional Torch Kit. Or Starter Package 3 as Starter Package 2 but with a brazing hearth and frame. If these are of interest or if you require any advice or recommendations please do not hesitate to contact us on 01623 707955.

The product described as being demonstrated at Ali Pally is what we call Technoweld. We supply a small pack of 5 x 200mm rods (so 1 metre) which comes with a scratch stick and a full set of instructions. On the website this is £16.20 but this week only for telephone orders CuP Alloys are offering Discounted Doncaster Exhibition prices, in this case £15.00. Please note this is telelphone orders only and is valid 4 - 8th May inclusive.

Hi David,

we have a short video on the website please see **LINK**

It's difficult to illustrate what goes wrong as usually the problem is behind the torch!! Joking aside we are looking at ways to use technology to get closer to our customers, watch this space.

NDIY thanks for the kind words but it is impossible to give standard discounts across the board, some of these products are precious metals and if we gave 25% discount on 455 we would be out of business very quickly! We are happy to confirm the price of any item on 01623 707955.

28/04/2020 08:43:10

I am sure many of you like us at CuP Alloys are disappointed about the cancellation of the Doncaster Exhibition which should have been at the end of next week. We at CuP Alloys are always trying to think of ways of supporting the Model Engineer, whether it be adding new products, video tutorials, society talks or just good old fashioned advice. We have therefore decided that if we can't go to the exhibition we will bring part of it to you! All TELEPHONE orders (sorry guys I can't alter all the website) placed from 4th to 8th May inclusive will be at the exhibition discounted prices. For example 1 x 5 rod packet of 455 1.5mm dia will be £25.00 and not £28.20. A hearth will be £30.00 not £39.60 etc. Again these are for telephone orders only so please call 01623 707955.

Thread: Which suppliers are open for business?
08/04/2020 08:58:19

Hi guys, what terrible times we are living in at the moment. For now CuP are open. Glen and I are working alternate days so we are observing social distancing. As Hopper says things are changing and this may certainly change after this weekend if conditions are tightened due to selfish idiots going out this Easter.

However, we are confident we meet the guidelines for now so have every intention of carrying on. Carriers are calling every day (again observing distances) and we are posting orders every day. Hopefully we will see some light at the end of the tunnel shortly and some normality will return.

Stay safe everyone.

Hi Alan, we have been offered a refund of monies paid. This, along with the fact we don't know how long the restrictions will apply plus the schedule at Doncaster Racecourse would, if I had to guess, lead me to say it won't be rearranged this year. All we can do is hope and pray for a speedy ending to this dreadful virus and a return to normality. Glen and I at CuP are working alternate days and so strictly observing social distancing whilst keeping supplies open. Keep safe everyone.

02/04/2020 11:19:15

As posted I can confirm the show is cancelled. We received an email from Richard end of last week. Sad times we are currently living in,.

02/04/2020 09:31:33

I am sorry I can confirm the Doncaster Exhibition has been cancelled. This is a wise and very brave decision by the organisers who I am sure will be well out of pocket having spent on publicity etc.
CuP are currently considering ways to soften the blow for their customers, government restrictions allowing. Please watch this space.

Glen and I have decided to work alternate days thereby keeping CuP Alloys open and complying with social distancing in these terrible times. Of course this post might not age well as the government may lock us all down shortly, but until that happens if you are 'self isolating' or 'socially distancing' yourselves in your workshop CuP are open fas usual or all your brazing and soldering material and equipment needs.

Whatever you are doing please, please follow government advice and stay safe.

Thread: Can we have a really clear distinction between Silver Soldering and Brazing
21/01/2020 10:26:26

The definitions are made by reference to the temperature. Below 450C is soldering, above brazing. I always start my talks to the societies with this fact and then go on to say how we still say silver soldering, even at 630C! Even though for example 455 is a silver BRAZING alloy technically, we still refer to it as silver SOLDERING. Confused?

In truth the processes are the same in almost all aspects, with the exception of the temperature.

Thread: Ally Pally Exhibition
20/01/2020 13:47:41

Hi Jason, we have to hire a transit, usually diesel. Although economy is better than my F Pace!!

20/01/2020 12:42:23

JasonB, I wish you had come and made yourself known to us. We were justb across fro JB. Would be great to put a face to one so supportive. I used a bit of an advertising strapline a few years ago saying let CuP Alloys pay your entrance fee by buying materials at discounted prices!! Our brazing hearth set for example is £8 cheaper than online. But it's as much about supporting the exhibition and the hobby as selling for us.

There can be no getting away from the fact that this year the show was missing some 'regulars' and the hall was very spacious. However, I got the impression footfall was good. Also noticeable was the large number of pushchairs with young families in tow. Tomorrows engineers we hope?

If next year goes ahead, providing the emission charges are not too high, and God willing, CuP Alloys will definitely be there.

Thread: soldering stainless steel
10/01/2020 10:30:07

As usual, with all things soldering and brazing Keith is always right. Stainless steel does have some challenges when compared to eg brass, copper, mild steel, however you join it, whether soldered, brazed or welded. However, as Keith says using the right materials when coupled with the right techniques and principles will lead to success. A good start is to speak to someone with over 100 years of soldering and brazing experience available to them!

The Stayclean Stainless Liquid Flux supplied by CuP has a proven track record when soldering stainless. It appears to be expensive because it must be shipped by special carrier. Again, as Keith says if you can collect at the exhibitions such as Ally Pally next week you will more or less halve the cost.

Declaration of interest - I now own CuP Alloys. smileysmileysmiley

Thread: Brazing demonstrations
14/11/2019 12:08:07

Thanks for the kind comments Jeff. I know I have a face for radio wasn't sure if I had a voice for video!

12/11/2019 13:41:48

Several visitors to the MMEX this year asked me when I was doing a brazing demonstration. Some of you may remember we used to join a couple of bits of copper on the CuP Alloys stand to illustrate some of the principles of creating a sound brazed joint. Unfortunately due to health and safety restraints, we have been prevented from lighting the torch. Being able to show what you are buying and how to use the products have been a cornerstone of our service for many years. So in order to offer something close to this service, we now feature a video clip at www.cupalloys.co.uk showing fluxing and heating techniques. There is also a video clip showing the flame profiles of various Sievert burners, helping you choose the right burner for your application, whether it be preheating, precise heating, inside eg the firebox, etc.

Of course, should your clubhouse regulations allow, we can bring this demo to you along with a more detailed discussion about the brazing history and process, either physically, or by Skype link. Please contact us for details.

Thread: Silver Soldering - A Simple Process Made Difficult
13/11/2018 13:48:42

Please remember we are available to visit your Club and deliver the talk. Also in a new innovation we could link via Skype (at a much lower cost). Of course you lose the opportunity of buying discounted brazing and soldering materials and equipment this way but the travel costs are nil. Alternatively Keith's book is available on the CuP website or next at the London Exhibition in January.
