Thread: Wiring an MEM starter for 240v Lathe |
07/02/2014 14:41:14 |
When in the workshop today I took the opportunity to remove the cover from my MEM starter and inside of the lid was what I was hoping to find instructions relating to the use of the starter on a 240v supply/load ! There as been a lot written on how the starter should be wired when on 240V so here's what MEM say should be done, sorry about the pic's quality. Cheers H |

John Your MEM starter is ok to use and as Otley suggests it does function as a NVR device ! The overlaod at 2.-4 is just about ok I always set an overload at 50% of the FCL so at on the lower setting of 2 amp you have some protection. Many years ago when I was a apprentice electrician I was taught that when useing the MEM starter on a single phase supply the 'live' should go through all 3 of the contacts in order to balance the load through the overload heaters so you would connect the 'live' to A1 then put a link between A & B then a link between L2 & L3 the live would then go from terminal C to the reversing switch or motor whichever the case maybe, your earth wire should go to the 'earth' terminal on the starter case along with the earth to your reversing switch or motor and the neutral should run to your reversing switch or motor but you will need to join it with a connector block. Alternatively you could wire it the following way live to L1 and live out from A neutral to L3 and nuetral out from C never run the earth though a set of contacts always use the earth terminal on the starter, reversing switch etc..Strangely when I acquired my S7 the MEM starter was wired in the way I first suggested hope this is of help H

Tongue in cheek Tony (chunk) replies "Due to staff Holiday's and illness we are short staffed at the moment" well I note the post was at 13.15 so firstly if things are that bad why is he on the net and not sorting out the problems ? It could be suggested he was on his lunch break well again maybe he would be better off having a working lunch. |

I recently purchased a copy of Model Engineers Workshop Manual by Geo.H.Thomas and I am interested in the top slide lock, on page 182 of the book fig 16.1 shows the lock screw with it's end turned down to 1/8 x 1/8 then to the right off the lock screw it's shown with a pointed tip piece. I cannot see anywhere in the text anything related to what this tip should be made of, I was this maybe brass but would welcome comments or suggestions please. H |

Thread: Federation Boiler certificates UK |
22/01/2014 15:04:45 |
The only thing I would suggest is to ask the dealer/seller to arrange to get the boiler/engine independently tested and offer to pay for the test, that way the engine/boiler should come to you without any worries also if the seller/dealer say's he has not got time etc walk away. |
22/01/2014 08:00:38 |
Ian my club are more than happy to help in such circumstances but I was referring to someone who simply wants to join the club with the sole intention of getting a boiler cert and you never see them again ! Cheers H |
21/01/2014 22:11:02 |
" where Club membership for the year may be £20 (or so?) it may well still be worth the Sellers while to join just to obtain a current certificate (as it should add much more to the value)" not a positive reason to join a club and use it's resources this is why my club and many others are refusing this type of member. So better get it tested by one of the independent boiler inspectors then sell it. |

Thread: Federation Boiler certificates UK |
15/01/2014 09:12:49 |
In a nut shell and I'm sure someone will correct me if wrong ME clubs in the UK are in the main members of a federation, the Southern Federation of Model Engineers and likewise the Northern Federation of Model Engineers these two bodies along with other interested parties such as Insurance representatives draw up the rules to which boilers are tested. ME clubs will then appoint a boiler tester/tester's within their club who will test a members boiler and issue a certificate, this certificate then allows the member to take out the necessary insurance to use the boiler in public. Hope this is of help H |
