Thread: Die Head Advice
29/03/2014 22:20:05

Many thanks for all replies, still would be interested in knowing the purpose of the small screw located in the slot in the back plate (photo 3 left hand side) .

Swarf, Mostly! I assume you are referring to the knurled screw will check it out, having only taken a quick look the knurled screw looks to be a screw with a screw !

Andrew it is probably a 1/4" diehead it does contain a set of 1/4 x 28 dies

Thanks again

Had another quick look at die head found that in the grove there is a short set of division marks with a circled +/- either end. The the - can just be seen in the second photo to the right of the threaded hole.

So looking at the end on photo there is the knurled screw then lookinginto the small grove in the end plate there is a small screw what is the function of these two item ? Also there are three very small holes two in the front part and one in the back plate I am assuming these are for a drop of oil ?. Would welcome your comments, advice or links to info please.

Thread: Painting a copper boiler
10/03/2014 06:36:48

Only painted a couple of TE boilers and used VHT paint straight onto the copper, in my case I used black but VHT paint is available in other colours. Both engines are fired and to date the paint is still in good condition.

I have purchased from both companies without any problem but I must admit (slightly off topic) I have to smile when visiting a RDG ebay page to see the inflated price they put on some item that are out of stock

Morning Deric

I'm happy to hear you got the job done, the engine when I got it struggled to maintain water level in the boiler so when I checked it out I found that the pump ram was only 3/8 and also it was fitted with two 'O' rings that were of the wrong material ! Anyway to cut the story short I bored out the jump and fitted a new ram to the size of the drawing which now works fine. The wheels well thats another story but I find it was worth getting them done.

Have fun with the rest of the build.

Hi I have modified the pump since I acquired the engine as it was only fitted with a 3/8" ram so I increased it to the size on the drawing. You have noted one loose screw I needed to remove the suction pipe and have not replaced it yet.

Good luck with the pump today

Hi Deric

I have added several more photos to the Burrell album hope they are of use to you, the new pump drawing show the con rod at the end of the ram, also the con rod as a .250" set in it and one more bit of info that may help you the top fixing hole for the my pump is approx 1" from the top of the horn plate and .500" in from the edge. I also checked my drawing and the pump fixing holes are not shown ! If I can be of further help let me know.

Thread: Chuck Advice
04/03/2014 10:21:34

I'm contemplating getting a smaller chuck for my 4" rotary table and I am leaning towards a 80mm chuck of the type that use's tommy bars in place of a chuck key. I've not used this type of chuck before so I wondering what are the pro's & con's ? I don't do a lot of work with the rotary table and I am drawn to this type of chuck not because it's cheaper but for it's lower profile, would welcome comments please.

Thread: Inverter Remote Stop button.
21/02/2014 09:40:30

Hi Roger understand what your saying about space so if you are going for a pendant you will find some cheaper alternatives on the link below, secondly as said previously I'm sure if you make your location known someone would come and give you a hand !

Hi Roger if your going to spend your £70 might want to check this out and go the whole hog , have to ask why don't you resite the inverter ?

Hope you get it sorted soon

There's plenty of advice for Roger within this post but I for one am still unclear as to what Roger wants his 'big red button' to do does he (a) want it to function as a Emergency Stop or (b) does he want it to stop his lathe along with the normal stop/start ?

H

19/02/2014 04:15:50

Roger I think you will find those instructions are refering to additional stop button/buttons ! A stop button is not the same as a emergency stop button, the difference being a stop button will stop the drive in thev proper manner e, g allowvthevdrive to run down and stop the emergency stop will cut power to the inverter and should only be used in a emergency. So is it an additional stop button you want to fit or e/stop ?

H

18/02/2014 22:00:52

Hi Roger if you want just one big red button then as said previously in needs to go in the 240v feed to the inverter, and only used in a emergency to cut the power to the inverter.

Eric good thinking must admit I had not considered the pulley balance, so I shall use my extension nipple and remove it when finished lubricating the pulley.

Shadow Graph have been dragged into the 21st century they now fit them with sophisticated electronics and fir them onto optical sorting machine that dependant on size sort fasteners at phonominal speeds checking for length, thread, head and even the recess of fasteners with torx or allen drives !

Back end of last year I picked up some bound volumes of model engineering mags from the middle 70's and I was amused to read the letters pages, two or more correspondents would be at each others throats but very polite and proper such as ' Sir I beg to differ but your comments lead me to believe that you have never turned on a lathe never mind used one ................
