Thread: Machine Mart offers.
23/02/2014 23:08:24

This is the one I'm looking at:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cbs45md-41-2in-x-6in-metal-cutting-ban?da=1&TC=SRC-bandsaw

the only place I've seen it cheaper is Warco, but Machine Mart is a five minute drive away!

Does anyone know of any offers from Machine Mart currently?

I know they sometimes offer VAT free prices and I am looking at bandsaws...

Thanks,

Thread: Lathe cutting tapers.

It's fairly old, but metric.

I was boring last week over a longer distance and it was fine.

I've had it 8 months or so, it was relatively unused for 10 years before I had it. Before that it had spent it's life in a technical college. It's in very good condition for its age IMHO.

Will try try the bar in chuck when I get home.

19/02/2014 21:01:13

Yes I saw that thread!

It's not a gap bed though.

19/02/2014 20:49:04

I've lifted it off its mounts and it's the same (or worse), the lathe weighs 700kg so I've always assumed it wouldn't twist?

the ground has been very wet here recently and hasn't dried out for a month or so.

Ive tried turning short and long pieces of metal.

I have done two test now that I believe indicate the saddle is lifting slightly near the chuck.

1) DTI on top of chuck, attached to saddle, approx 0.05mm difference over 7cm, highest figure at tailstock end of chuck.

2) DTI on ways, attached to saddle, approx 0.05mm difference over 7cm, highest figure at headstock end.

19/02/2014 19:01:26

Have tried sharp tools with 0.1mm cuts.

All gibs etc have been checked.

Its a Harrison lathe, I wouldn't have thought the headstock would move suddenly.

Scraped the ways.

Is there anything in the saddle / carriage that would affect this?

19/02/2014 17:55:45

Tightened headstock bearings.

Checked bolts.

Still the same.

19/02/2014 16:39:41

No, it's on auto-feed.

19/02/2014 16:31:43

I don't think it's the chuck, it hasn't been changed recently.

There is 0.05mm of play on the chuck when an 18" bar is in the chuck. When chuck is removed and bar inserted into spindle, play on spindle is 0.02mm

tried various tools and checked the height.

My lathe has suddenly started cutting tapers.

Using a three jaw chuck and no tailstock it is 0.05mm taper over 40mm on 16mm stock and on 40mm stock it is 0.02mm over 4cm.

It was fine a couple of days ago.

Any ideas?

Thread: Hydraulic lathe not working.
17/02/2014 22:42:12

I found something on the rear of the gauge, but this turned out to be a magnet to catch metal filings.

The hydraulic unit is only connected to the workings of the lathe via a 3P+E electrical connection. The cross-feed makes no difference, although I did try it just to make sure!

Pressure in the manual is 150PSI, which is pretty much what it is.

In the end I stripped the unit on the back of the crossslide, and the master cylinder was seized, the stylus was moving due to it being on a linkage but the cylinder wasn't.

Now stripped and rebuilt and it's working fine

thanks for your help!

Filter is located on the end of the pressure feed pipe in the sump under the pump and appeared spotless

motor is definitely turning correct way.

Small amount of oil coming out of return pipe when it's undone now.

Still not working.

Hi, I believe the motor to be turning the right way, although the switch is the other side of the lathe to the motor. Probably worth connecting it the other way just to make sure.

It is a simple hydraulic system for copying a profile that is put between two centres on the back of the lathe. A stylus on the back of the cross-slide follows the profile and adjusts the cross-slide to re-create the profile on the workpiece that is in the lathe. So basically, the stylus is attached to a cylinder which is attached to another cylinder that pushes the cross-slide in and out.

Hi, I finally managed to find time to connect the motor back on my Harrison 155 today for the hydraulic profiling.
Last time it was working was 8 months ago and 300 miles away!

I've checked the oil level and the filter.
The motor runs and the oil pressure is correct according to the manual.
However the hydraulics don't work, there is no movement.

I know nothing about this sort of thing. Undoing the three pipes on the back of the lathe there is only oil coming out of the pump pipe. The return and other one don't appear to have oil in them.

Any ideas on what to look at / check?

Regards,
Chris

Thread: Thickness of Bahco Sandflex 12" hacksaw blade.
10/02/2014 12:08:55

Sorry, forgot to say it was the 24T blade I need!

axminster is a long way from me unfortunately and I need some today!

thanks anyway.

10/02/2014 11:31:03

Thanks for taking the time to measure.

Although I've just been to a shop and measured one myself and it was 0.93mm! I didn't buy it as they were £3 each!

maybe there are different types?!

Thread: Rotary Laser centre finder

I made this up, it fits on the spindle rather than in a collet to save swapping things over. A piece of tape with a pin hole in narrows the beam. It works ok, but I wouldn't use it for anything that needs to be accurate. The holes are to attempt to balance it slightly.

The laser was £1.55 posted from ebay.

Can someone measure the thickness of the teeth side of a Bahco Sandflex 12" hacksaw blade please.

I need the teeth side of the blade to fit into a slot.

Thanks,

It's this blade:

And this is the measurement I need:

Thread: Edge finish on laser cutting.
09/02/2014 16:29:35

Thanks for the answers, looks like mine were cut too fast then.

The bottom of the part is 0.5mm wider than the top, so they have a taper of 0.25mm on each edge.

The time I spent designing these parts and making prototypes I was pretty upset/disappointed when they arrived.

I will will try water jet cutting again I think, but use a local company I can visit and talk to.

Thanks for for your help!
