Thread: What could possibly go wrong!?
13/04/2018 13:13:02

These where 'walking' out a Hardware Store on a regular basis, so something had to be done, BUT oh dear!

Security?

Geoff - Time to do a video of the Excel in operation I think.

Thread: Percolated coffee
22/03/2018 11:28:02

The portable gas stove is so much more convenient compared with the electric one.

I set the KRUPS grinder to mid way on grind selection, but will experiment with coarser settings for a longer brew.
The result of this first brew just confirmed that NOTHING beats percolated coffee, something I only drank in the '50s-80s.
Why I stopped I have no idea - DUH
Vacuum brewer now on holiday for the duration.

Percolated coffee

Geoff - What a pleasure downing percolated coffee once again.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
16/03/2018 11:14:18

Propped neighbours fence away from the shed as it's ripped the gutter off angry

They are waiting for someone to fix the lot as they have been nearly blown flat already.

Will see if my Heath Robinson survives the winds next week.

Geoff - If not then neighbourly 'words' will be spoken.

Thread: Yet another bandsaw question
15/03/2018 13:04:26

Was given advise in the '70s when I had a vertical bandsaw:

If the blade starts to veer offline then lightly press a dressing stone against the teeth causing the problem, to blunt them slightly.

Geoff - Worked a treat.

Thread: A. Mellor Plumbing & Heating Services - Plug
11/03/2018 08:19:27

A. Mellor Plumbing and Heating Services, Rochdale.

Just HAD to do a plug for this company!

Anthony Mellor came all the way from Rochdale to do an inspection on replacing my 20year old Keston boiler.

He phoned a few days later to say installation would commence on the Thursday of that week, and sure enough, Anthony Derby and Ashley Walsh turned up 0730h as promised.

They completed the job in one day, staying overnight in Brome, and returning Friday to check for any leaks and to apply more sealer to the roof vent.

To say it was a relief to have a warm Bungalow again and just a few days before 'The Beast from the East' descended was a relief.

Geoff - Well done guys and company!

Dean,

Do as IanSC suggested, as it's very easy.

Geoff - Photobucket was history the moment they joined the RansomWare brigade.

Otley,

At least yours should end up like this on Earth!

Cast iron IS brittle

Geoff - Must have taken quite a bit of welly to achieve this!

Hi Geoff, lovely South Norfolk too, just west of Loddon.

Diss, with icicles on guttering.

Icy but dripping

Geoff - First time I've seen these.

John

Ditto from me as well.

Geoff - Going through a bad patch as well.

Thread: Cleaning up surface rust
02/03/2018 11:20:13

Phosphoric acid, as in cola brands.

Dilute pure axis 10:1 or thereabouts, spray/brush/dip part, leave overnight, then wash in water.

May need more applications depending on how rusty.

Phosphoric also makes short work of scale, it bubbles as the acid does its job.

Will be using some in Boadicea's cylinder block.

Geoff - Also de-scales sink, taps, bog etc

Which part of Norfolk Trevor?

Geoff - I'm in South on the border with Suffolk.

Thread: FREE TO GOOD HOME

Dougie,

The British Heart Foundation will take any left over.

They took my duplicate sets.

Geoff - Freed up a lot of shelf space in the Workshop.

Thread: What did you do Today 2018
27/02/2018 11:05:04

I await your report in eager anticipation Robin.

I'm a sucker for such implements/tools 😤

New boiler installed just in time, there being 1.1/2" of snow on the ground when I woke up.

Geoff - Hospital appointment at the Emergency X-Ray department later.

26/02/2018 11:53:02

Absolutely bugger all so far this year what with no heating and now two bouts of waterworks infection in as many weeks, being prescribed antibiotics each time, and they do tend to 'pull-me-down' so have no inclination or interest in doing much.

I haven't given up on powering the BH600G's Feed Rod independently of the Gearbox, BUT my 'incident' when I bent the Gear Shaft when under power feed, and replacing it, may/has bent something else within the Apron as all motors including Steppers that I've tried either grind to a halt or are slowed down for a short period at the same spot the Saddle Handwheel reaches during every revolution.

I have one monster stepper motor to try once I feel better, having sorted the wiring out and tested it, but if that doesn't work then last ditch will be to to strip the Apron once again to find the culprit, but only under duress!

Geoff - What a pleasure having central heating once again.

Thread: Bench grinders and their dust
26/02/2018 11:25:06

My solution that has worked a treat for capturing the metal bits, BUT not the dust for obvious reasons.

Grinder is in the Carport for the above reason.

Annotations say what that magnetic 'wand' does, and it also picks up 99% of swarf generated by my machines when I clean as well as from the floors in Workshop and Carport wher a surprising amount lands when I forget to use the 'wand'

New Combi boiler installed by A.Mellor Plumbing Casleton, Rochdale, who did an excellent job and all in one day!

Geoff - Thank you Anthony Mellor!

I hadn't picked this up - I agree they aren't what they were but I've found them useful in the past few years when I want components fast, and they are cheaper than RS for lots of things. Popped in recently and was depressed to see further reductions in the range of goods. Being professionally concerned with IoT security, I've been very unimpressed with their recent ventures into connected gadgets, selling lots of things with well known vulnerabilities. I even raised this with them about one product and they were totally unwilling to discuss it.

And yes, their online catalogue is woefully bad!

John,

I've asked numerous vendors/manufacturers about their security, and their total silence is deafening!

One even asked me to contact them privately, so obviously they didn't want to discuss this on Social Media meaning that they had NONE.

If they are becoming an IoT vendor then customers better hold them to account with regards security as the industry as a whole has proved just how lamentable their attitude is to this.

Geoff - Back on antibiotics again.

Thread: Simplex machining the pieces.
18/02/2018 12:08:17

Dave,

Don't dispair!

"Beginners" anything is a misnomer in the extreme especially when it comes to building a miniature locomotive.

The machining skills needed are hard earned, not taking into account the time and equipment needed.

Not surprised at the swarf you have produced.

We ALL or most of us started with swarf at the beginning, BUT improved.

The learning curve IS steep, but persevere as the first time you are pulled by your Simplex WILL make it all worthwhile as I found with mine.

A magic moment hard to describe and never forgotten, even more so with a carriage full of passengers behind that the loco you built is capable of pulling with utter ease.

Geoff - Back on antibiotics again for 2nd effing waterworks infection, so everything has ground to a halt.

Thread: Safety matting - today's Screwfix offer.
02/02/2018 16:16:01

John,

The same as duct tape.

For years I thought it was duck tape.

On joining an air conditioning company, that also made and installed ducting, was I made very aware of my faux pa! blush

Geoff - The guys at work just would not let that go.

Thread: VFD problem
02/02/2018 16:01:23

Thanks Ian P.

Sounds more like it.

The motor was getting somewhat hot, but even switching the belt to different pulley grooves to get the motor fan speed up, but spindle speed not, didn't help much as the second switch off proved.

Next time will have to sort out a method of forced draught into the VFD enclosure.

The drilling was when I made a holder for my 5C collets using a step drill & 3mm ally sheet.

Geoff - Heating via electric oil heaters and electric blanket, the latter utter bliss.
