Thread: The Great Silver Soldering Foul Up

Andrew,

Thanks for starting a dedicated thread.

Some good advise being offered, and no doubt more to come.

I wouldn't dream of passing comment on your mishap. indecision

Happens to all of us in time, and Forums like this will come to ones rescue.

Thank you Sir Tim!

Thread: Which wire to use

I'm resurrecting this post, as no matter how I search, I just cannot find a supplier of suitable PB sheet, to make the 'Tweezers', that doesn't want both my arm & leg then some other part as payment.

Any help or alternatives please.

One of my periodic 'OFF' days, so catching up on projects yet to be done, and nonplussed at the number.

Geoff - I live in hope, however

Do tell Andrew.

Your misfortune may prevent others from doing the same.

charadam/Clive,

Signed the petition and mentioned, in the comments section, what China has had to resort to after that region killed off all their bees and other pollinators.

When I first read about that some time ago, I couldn't believe the depths of stupidity reached in arriving at that situation.

It would appear we, the West, are hell bent on ignoring the lessons/mistakes made by others.

Bob.

I do have some thanks, and probably every other brand as well, but I don't want to obscure any areas where repairs need to be made, especially welding and leading.

All I need to do now is a wash down with warm water to get to bare metal again.

When it's time to apply an undercoat, I may use a heat gun just to make sure that no moisture from the atmosphere had settle on the panel.

Making two more Skyhooks to use in the Carport.

Saw my first Eurofighter Typhoons overhead this morning, just flying round the town, no tight turns.

Didn't realise the Canard wings where so big.

Been busy stripping the Austin Seven body down to bare metal, and to prevent rust, am applying a coat of Gumming Solution that is easily removed using warm water.

Geoff - The stuff works a treat.

Andy,

Where are those shocks used?

My '35 Austin Seven has friction versions as well.

Ian,

Have not used it in anger yet, but will post results.

Feels quite secure on that 18" CI base, BUT the problem is finding a wobble free area on the floor for it.

May try with one or more bolts that can be screwed through the base from the top to stop the wobble, if I cannot find a suitable area on the floor.

Bracing to the wall will be done if needed, but the wall hinging method is still on the cards if the stand does not live up to my expectations.

Ady1,

LOL

Heaven forbid.

I will use it so that if it does, it only makes a dent in the concrete.

I'm not building a tank, so hopedully that won't happen, but I "never say never" as I've learned.

Frank,

Good advise given on recovering.

One thing, DON'T become despondent, or loose faith!

It's happened to ALL of us, and more than once.

It will happen to you again.

It's part of the hobby and character building as me old Man would tell me, grinning from ear to ear.

As long as you learn from such happenings, then you have achieved something.

My first moment was less traumatic in stripping the head off of a 12BA bolt, all too easy, and covered the fact by gluing it back on so nobody would know.

Geoff - Well it has snowed in June before!

Here's what I used in the driveway after finishing the Carport:

Concrete Floor Paint

Result:

Concrete Floor Paint

Don't remember who I bought it from, but did spend days/weeks researching/searching.

The price of 2-pack put me off.

This is my hobby, not some of the manufacturing facilities that make me drool.

Geoff - No more oil/grease stains and concrete dust.

It's done!

Must be one of, if not, my quickest project.

Not side-tracked.

Decided to try a Vice Stand first, using what I had available, instead of something hinged on the wall.
Top plate is 19"x12"X1/4"
Tube is 3"Ø X1/8"
Used my CT-312 TIG in anger for the first time, 'Walking-The-Cup" welding the top plate to the tube.
Only time will tell if the stand is suitable or not.

Couple more photos in my General Album.

Geoff - Serious work on the Austin now.

Well done Stewart,

Knew you would have a Chesire Cat grin when running.

You have now become addicted to the SCO mix.

I was the very first time I came into contact with it.

Guesses anyone?

Geoff - Just finished domestic duty.

Graham,

What the heck is that material made of?

I can get swarf coming off a nice blue, but never spark !

Yesterday removed the Austin Seven engine/gearbox using block & tackle hooked onto special hooks I made to screw into 2&3 Spark plug holes.

M18 plugs with M10 down the centres and hooks screwed in, with a bolt between.

ME experience and Workshop to the rescue.

OK you lot, here goes:

Why not run the cable through the roof space?

Had to do that when a new condensing boiler unit was fitted.

It only needed conduit form boiler into the roof space, and then the same at the other end into the Garage where our CU is.

Thread: TIG welding

Update.

Photos say it all.

TIG Welding

TIG Walking-The-Cup

This is the limit for my machine, set to its maximum amperage, and thankfully I won't be welding 1/4" every day.

This is the vice stand, photo to follow.

I will now only use MMA for quick and dirty welding as I spoke far too soon at my improving.

Well I did improve welding flat joins, but a real dogs breakfast on the type of corner weld I've 'succeeded' with using TIG.

Still need to do a lot more practice, but oh my word, what control you have.

Can see why people rave about using TIG.

Geoff - TIG for me from now on.

Dave,

Neighbour and I are putting our heads together to try and sort out a way to make it decidedly unpleasant for anyone else who tries or gets over the fence.

The solution must not be obvious, otherwise he/we will be in trouble if some ^%# so much as scratch themselves.

Climbing rose and/or bramble would do the trick, but he doesn't want to wait for them to grow.

One owner, on the other side of the path, has put purpose made sharp 'anti-climbing' spikes along the top of his fence, and a sign warning people.

What has this world come to when you cannot protect your property?

Metal acquired for the vice stand, plus enough 50mm sq bar to make 4x Dickson style QC tool holders.

Geoff - Looks as if the stand could be finished sooner rather than later

20/05/2015 14:35:19

This morning sorted out the Workshop side door lock, after my neighbour's shed was broken into Monday/Tuesday

The perils of having a footpath along the side of your property.

When renting in Bradford, was 'done' whilst sleeping upstairs, the property only having a low wall along the footpath.

The 'counts' must have sent a toddler in through the narrow top window in the kitchen.

Vice Stand:

This afternoon will source metal plates to weld onto the 3" tube upright, one for bolting the vice on, and the other to bolt onto the C.I. base.

Photos to follow.

Coffee finished, so off to the steel merchant down the road.

Geoff - Should finish the vice stand tomorrow, unless sidetracked again.

If the door is wood, plane an angle on top (low side out) so the water runs off.

daveb,

Your suggestion of 4/11/14 appears to have done the trick.

We've just had a day of fairly heavy rain being pushed along by Westerly winds and not a drop of water collected on the top of the door.

Only now been able to check, so thank you once again yes

Pity the old body isn't so easily fixed sad

Geoff - Her indoors will be happy at not having water drip onto her hair now.

Clive,

GT40!

Do tell please.

Martin,

Convert to side hinged.

Done that to my garage one and it's the best thing I did to it, plus the same with the Carport one, although it came without the 'up&over' gubbins.

Geoff - Can TIG practice be helping with my stick welding?
