Thread: Boring tool |

Good Evening. Attached is a photo of a boring tool that I acquired with the mill. It required a lot of fettling for me to be able to use it, and it is now light fingertip control. I carries no name of mfg. and I would be interested to know its origins. Does anyone have a similar one? Lynne

Thread: vfd question |

I have recently invested in a VFD for my mill, I've been following much of the thread with interest. I now know, that having had a few problems, it must stem from not having sat, and RTM what ever that is; applied logic, though I think that a knowledge of the subject helps the application of logic, and it is certainly not 'pretty simple'. It seems from 'Old Mart's'. assessment, that my not being an electrical engineer, I am not going to understand the manual, and it serves me right. Do the homework and you will not need to ask how to install it. Right. Andrew summed it up very succinctly 'VFD's are pretty straight forward, but you do need a fair degree of 'knowledge' to set one up, and to understand manuals. I am now reluctant to ask a question. Regards, Lynne

Thanks for all your responses. Martin gave me a very clear answer to my main question. My further musing was that pictorially , chinese switches appeared much larger and more complex looking than many uk versions, any particular reason for this. I now realize that the switches I have looked at are in the voltage ranges 220V to 415v. The outputs from the VFD are 10 and 24v. So do I need to look for switches that clearly specify these ranges , or are the others OK to use? I've looked at InverterDrive web, and I cannot see any low voltage switch gear, plenty of 230/240v gear. So some clarity on the subject would be useful for me. Thanks, Lynne |

I am looking for momentary switches to build a remote panel for recently purchased vfd. Have been given ebay reference by a fellow member of the group. Many switches are referred to as 1no/1nc or vece vesa. Am I correct in thinking that no/nc is dependant on how they are wired up? Also switches sourced from China appear to be a much larger switch arrangement than switches that are sourced/made in the UK, and I am puzzled, why? Can anyone explain why. Regards Lynne |
Thread: Emergencies / Braking |

Thanks for all your responses. The project is to convert 1ph mill to 3ph, using a 3ph 0.55kw motor I was given some years ago. (It is a runner) No particular emergency in mind, though many years ago my shirt cuff picked up on the spindle of the pillar drill I was using; fortunately the sleeve ripped off. Some damage to the arm, but not major; so I guess that is in the back of my mind. The VFD I am looking at does have DC Injection built in, If I buy , I will leave it at the default setting, rather than mess things up. I think that configuring the ramp down settings will slow things down fairly rapidly, but I still have the current emergency stop to cut the mains coming in, which seems a reasonable route to go down. Regards, Lynne

There were a number of posts, recently, concentrating on vfd/machine emergency situations, and various approaches of dealing with them.. Purely in relation to the 'emergency' aspect; which is the better to have Dynamic braking or DC Injection, built into the vfd?. It appears the choice is one or the other, probably on the more expensive both. Lynne

Good Afternoon, On/Off switches for remote vfd operation, Should they be latching; is it posible that it depends on the model vfd . I am looking at a Invertec Optidrive E3 0.75 kw range. Lynne |

Thanks to all for the comment. Certainly had a senior moment, the RPM is on the plate. Have put a few pictures in my albums, plate and motor. Change from star to delta is by links, so that is easy. The next bigge is to sort out the VFD, so I may well return on this question. Regards Lynne |

Thanks to you all for getting back to me on this . John, All I can say is that the motor is quite a lump and heavy, though that is probably down to the fact that it all cast iron body. The mill is a Naerock RDM 350, and what bits of info. I have gathered over time, does'nt give any info about the motor, so it could well be 1/2 or 3/4hp. I am going to have to take the motor apart to fit a sleeve to the shaft and machine so can I establish the number of poles fairly easily from peering inside, but it would be useful to know exactly what to look for. Thanks again, Lynne

Current mill motor single phase, probably 1 hp, but not plated. Have an Assea 3phase .55Kw motor which I am thinking of using in conjunction with a vfd. Will it cope? Mill only gets light use. Would appreciate members input on the feasability of this. Thanks, Lynne

Michael, thanks for the link. interesting, but not quite what I had in mind for the '7'. I like the Aloris toolpost. I hate Imojis, and I do not visit sites where I know they are mobile> Rod, thanks for the reference to tubal caine's book. Lynne |
