Thread: Myford lathe paint code. |

Thanks Mike, This was for one of my customers in Germany. I suspect that he can have some mixed a lot cheaper than Myford's prices and also wouldn't have the carriage costs. Best regards, Steve. |

Hello all, Does anyone happen to know the NCS paint code for the Myford Blue (Aqua). Thanks and best regards, Steve |

Thread: Lathe and Milling Machine Equivalents |
11/04/2014 22:06:13 |
Hello Neil, The mini-lathe appears to have a lot of different set ups regarding the apron gearing. I'm trying to sort out a list myself to help me with the manufacture of the Handwheel dials. People's input on this thread would be a great help in that respect. In my particular case, I would like to know the exact carriage travel for one turn of the apron handwheel and the diameter of the handwheel shaft (8 or 9mm).
Best regards, Steve. |

Hello Gray, I was shown exactly the same method by a Toolmaker more than 35 years ago. Terry is no longer with us sadly but I still use his methods. Best regards, Steve. |

Hello Jerry, I use Ilocut 486 and find it good for steel and aluminium. Yes, it is comparatively expensive, but as JS has alluded to above, there are no evaporation issues and it is a good rust inhibitor. Best regards, Steve. |
Thread: Myford Saddle hand wheel dial |

Hello John, So to summarise, now that the 33/34 gear trick is widely known, the QC box is the better option? Best regards, Steve.

Hello Trevor, That is interesting. I was always under the impression that they only reconditioned lathes to a standard spec. I stand corrected. I believe that there is an analogy with using a Myford lathe with or without a gearbox. Whilst it is perfectly acceptable to use a changewheel model, once the gearbox option is taken, the user will wonder how they ever managed without it. Mr Fletcher, I think I met you at Harrogate? Glad to hear the dial is giving good service. Best regards, Steve. |

Hello Peter, Thank you for your kind comments, I hope the dial gives you good service.
Gray, I think that your offer being declined is typical of how "head in the sand" the original Myford became in its final years and I can't help but think that this attitude contributed their eventual demise. Even when they took a lathe that was fitted with one of your dials in PX against a new one, the dial was removed and left languishing in their stores. I know this because the "New" Myford owners approached me at an exhibition and asked if I had made the dials for the original Myford. When I replied that no one had made them for Myford, the retort was "They must have done, because we found versions of the dial in the stores". I pointed out the scenario as laid out above and nothing more was said. I understand that you made about 500 units over the years, and my own sales have been far more than I had been expecting. Best regards, Steve. |

Brian, The register of the machine won't have anything to do with it turning a taper. Steve.

Hello Mick, Have you made any progress? Steve.

Hello Mick, I'm taking a wild guess that you may be making one of the Hodgson radials? If so have a look at Thomas Bloughs site. He has got round this problem by making the bronze valve seats with a 10 thou step on them and a corresponding undercut in the recess where the seat sits in the head. A hardenened tapered pin is then driven into the seat so that it expands the seat into the recess and is therefore held captive. The angle on the seat is then added afterwards.I have adopted this approach on my 18 cylinder version and have no reason to think why it should fail. I too was very worried about the loctite/interference fit. Tom's site is here.**LINK** and this is the section relating to the valve seats. There is a picture of my progress so far in my album. I can't seem to post one here. Steve. |

Plus one for Castrol Ilocut 486. It is good for steel and aluminium alike. No staining of tables and slides. I use this on the lathe and milling machine. Everything is given a coating of oil and this prevents corrosion also. I use a flood system on both machines but would imagine that brush application would bring a benefit. Steve. |

Hi Paul, I used to get notifications and now they have stopped. No idea why. The spam filter would appear to be not the culprit. Steve. |
Thread: Myford hand wheel dial |

Hello Martin, Not as yet. I understand from Gray that the publication of the article describing the construction of the Mini-lathe version will be early next year. After publication I will be looking at the feasibility of supplying a ready made dial or possibly a kit of parts. Best regards, Steve. |
