Thread: Rapidor Power Saw
06/11/2019 14:40:10

Hi all,

I have an old Rapidor power saw that has served well for many years. Recently it has started to wander whilst cutting, resulting in a tapered cut in the vertical plane.

I have checked the obvious with a new blade seated correctly, slides adjusted adequately, job square in the vice etc, but it doesn't seem to cure the issue.

Has anybody got any experience of these saws or any advice that may help me cure the issue please?

Many thanks in advance,

Exmoor309

Thread: Can't access digital content

I did wonder, but I would have thought with a digital service it would have an automatic reply system like most things these days?

Thread: Postman Cometh Part 2
06/12/2015 23:15:19

I had to do something similar with a brake shaft bracket that I couldn't machine. I heated it up to bright red, held it for a while then wrapped it in some ceramic insulation - It was still cooling down about 8 hours later, but it machined lovely the next day!

Thread: Tich - first build
06/05/2015 20:30:59

Looks like you've got a good start there! Try and get hold of the book for Tich by LBSC, which should be a great guide to help you along - I think it's something along the lines of "Simple Model Locomotive Building - Tich". You can also get other castings, parts etc from various suppliers such as GLR Kennions, GS Supplies, Reeves and Blackgates. I'd recommend shopping around between all of them to find the best price though!

Regarding taking the bits apart, I wouldn't take the wheels off the axles necessarily as they might be quartered and keyed (can't see from the photo). If you dropped the wheelsets out of the frame, you should get enough access to clean rust off the parts as various assemblies - If you've got a lathe, an easy way is to put the wheelsets up between centres and clean them up with a fine emery or scotchbrite. Try and cover your bedways up though if you do!

If you get hold of the book, I think it would give you a better picture if you want to build the boiler yourself or not - Entirely up to you!

Thread: Rolling Road
21/04/2015 20:40:04

Thanks for all your replies chaps. I'm going to follow suit with you Neville and go down the lines of angle with ball bearings bolted on, although not out of roller blade skates!

Thanks again!

Hi all,

I'm looking to make a rolling road for my 7 1/4" gauge Tich. Are there any published designs for such a thing? I tried a search, but it came up with nothing unfortunately!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply. What would you suggest otherwise to build?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Northumbrian and Rainhill? I've acquired some castings for Rainhill but I'm led to believe the design is filled with endless errors!

Thread: Glanze parting tool too high :-(
18/01/2015 15:29:31

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and have just come to use it this weekend. I bought the 16mm one as I have a Chester Craftsman lathe, and I have to have the QCTP holder wound right down to the bottom to get it on centreheight. There is about 1/16" clear from the bottom of the holder to the toolpost itself!

I must say that I had real issues parting off before, but with the Glanze unit I have no issues whatsoever! I just knocked the tip in with a block of Nylon that I had kicking around - As long as you're not too greedy with your feed, it works fine

Thread: Boxford Duet Turn & Mill Duo CNC
07/10/2014 16:54:30

Hi all,

I've been offered a Boxford Duet Turn & Mill Duo CNC machine out of a school, that they wish to get rid of. I have no experience with the smaller machines like this, so I wondered if anybody would be able to tell me anything about them? I've searched Google but I can't seem to find anything on this particular model. I've got some pictures but they aren't very clear (many apologies!)

Kind regards
Callum

Thread: Chester Craftsman Lathe - Back Gears?
19/06/2013 23:01:11

Hi Graham - What is your web address please?

Kind regards
Callum

03/05/2013 22:14:46

Hi Bazyle,

Yes, pulled out and turned 90 degrees so the two little pegs prevent it from locating in the pulley hole.

I think it is what you suggested with the bullwheel being glued with grease. I managed to turn this by hand but it was quite stiff. I've now got the backgears located and working perfectly!

Many thanks
Callum

03/05/2013 18:27:18

Hi all,

I've recently bought a Chester Craftsman lathe brand new for Chester UK. I've been having an issue of getting the back gears to engage? I've lifted the lid on the headstock, removed the lockpin and turned to the out position, but when I engage the gears the whole lot doesn't want to move and seems solid.

Does anybody know something that I don't? Any help would be much appreciated!

Kind regards
Callum

Hi all,

Many thanks for all your comments. They are all very much appreciated! I will be going to Ally Pally on Friday and will look at the respective companies and *might* make a decision!! Will anybody be there on Friday 18th?

Hi guys, many thanks for the replies!

A budget on machinery - I'd like to say about £1500 - 2000 for a lathe and the same for a miller. Tooling will be funded as and when. The space is not an issue, as I have a big garage where I keep my two locos at the present. My metalworking skills are very basic in the terms of manual machines. I used to program and operate CNC Wadkin Millers, but I have minimal skills of manual machines - I did those at college for basic lathe and mill work. I now work at the railway museum at Betws-Y-Coed as a driver/fitter, but I don't have any access to the machines in the workshop due to a rather large 7 1/4" 1/3 scale NGG16 garratt being built! So provisions at home are going to be made.

I plan to go to Chester towards the end of the month as it's only about 45 minutes away, but I'm also planning a trip to Warco which is in Surrey - so a bit of a drive! Bazyle - I'm from Lancashire originally, but my username Exmoor309 was my regular loco (0-4-2 tank, Jean No.309 built by Exmoor Steam Railway) at Brookside (before she went back to Exmoor for an overhaul last year - then she derailed and management sent her to the back of the shed... long story!)

The general gist I am getting, is that Warco seem a good company to deal with. I am still open to any other ideas that any of you may have.

Thanks again!

Callum

Hi Jeff,

I've read about the issues on the circuit board troubles for the speed controller. At least there is a fix for it, if/when it does go.

I've not heard anything about the service at Chester, so I will try and look into it! Thanks for the heads up!

Although I'd love a VM40, I haven't got the space or funds for it! It looks like a lovely machine though!

Thanks again

Callum
