not been on for Awile but now Happy with my 5" Black 5. I have now fitted Stainless Super Heater A's did not have one before. I also fitted a 15 mm gas Valve for my Regulator with an 1/2 pipe feeding the Super Heater. I have Also from Super heater fitted 10 mm pipe from super heater to Cylinders that was difficult. It now has loads power before it struggled to pull 7 persons going to see how many it will pull Thursday. It's such a different Loco with the Upgrades. Looking forward to second Run on it.

Thread: Black 5 Timing
03/11/2017 21:20:59

No I forgot to add besides the Crank coming out witch upset the timing. Also my uncle built frames motion gear and pistons over 60 years ago. He built it coping original l plans from crew but his first build. Since I finished building it always thought it lacked power. He had built it with steam pipes of 3/16 was told to small so used 1/4 but after found they should have been 3/8. I also found from my new club members the 10 mm gas valve is to small for a 5” Black 5 hence now fitting a 15mm Gas valve. I think the timing is very hard to get right first time unless you really understand it so many try and get wrong. The only real way I think is to get some one who knows what they are doing to check it and if it’s wrong set correctly. If in doubt ask a professional and learn from it

Well bit more work to do going to change the 10 mm gas valve for a 15 mm gas valve. Also changing the pipe work from cylinders to boiler from 1/4 to 3/8. Made new pipework to cylinders with oil feed in got to make fittings to go through boiler. Still got my timing to do but afraid making it worse but luckily Julian Atkins has offered to set it for me as he has done so many. I can follow part of it but does not properly sink in. My Black 5 lacked pulling power I have fitted new pistons and Rings but still struggled to pull 7 on the Flat. Thought if I try and get every thing as suggested stand a good chance of solving lack of power. With timing set as it should be correct size pipes and larger gas valve hope it soolves the problem.

Julian Atkins has offered to help but thought I would post a few photos for feed back. Maybe you can see some thing like you did with the Crank. Just like to know as it seems to have lost its Bark and is definatly down on Power. It really struggled to pull 7 adults no Imphal at all.Any comments really greatful thanks Guys’ve

Thread: Black 5 ready again to run

Like the Driver he he the Ladies where very slim

Well Ran my Black 5 Sunday with new Injector from Pavsteam worked perfect picked up every time. Loco Ran ok but really lacking power. I had 7 adults on it realty struggled to pull them even in full forward gear. Guys at the Club suggested the Valve timing might be out so going to read up on it see if it’s set right. Other than lacking power she Ran ok. Back to drawing board get my head into books and learn how to set Valve timing. Ron

Well going to Run this Sunday after a load of many problems,

I have had the Crank done that came loose rebuilt axle pump new boiler cladding now fits.

Just received a new Injector from Paul Pavier that really is suposed to be the very best,

I have had so many that did not work i have had piping changed plus i also changed also clacks ect.

I sent three to Julian Atkins who found the ventura in the tops where to big and would not work,

Julian going to send two back going to return to suplier see if they will change or refund,

I borrowed one from Julian that did pick up gave me hope.

Bought another from Manchester i think that one will be ok its a black one same as reeves.

Will fit the new one on Sunday and see if i have now got every thing sorted. I have run it on axle pump Ran fine till axle pump went and crank came loose.

I have now repainted it and for the first time feel very confident in it.

Roll on Sunday at Coalville its even forcast 21 deg so looks like its all going the right way.

We will see

Thread: Boiler Cladding for Taper Boiler help
18/07/2017 11:06:32

Thank you Guys it's just so springy Keatly metals suggested 0.7 so that's what I have.

Just going to take my time I have the old one I took of that was a bit to short looked dreadful.

The boiler had to have an inch and a half extension price added by GB Boilers as it was to short to reach the Smoke Box.

I should have bought a new brass plate then but decided to do it later. Well back in workshop time to get more experience this game so much to learn. Thank goodness for sites like this so you can get info from people who have already made Loco's. us novices would never learn if it was not passed down to us keeping Model Engineering alive.. many thanks Ron

Hi i have just taken my boiler cladding of to fit a new one.

My Black 5 boiler is tapered any suggestions on How to fit it neatly.

Last time the back edge was ok but the front edge i could not get close to the boiler.

I tried using home made clamps like large jubilee clips.

Should i aneal the brass sheet will it be easier to fit tight.

I have seen so many that look so good must be a way of doing it.

Any suggestions greatful as still trying to learn

Well got my new injector from Blackgates this morning fitted as you can see on Video utube it picked up no problem so after buying 7 one works feel very elated as the only other one that would work was one of Julian Atkins thank you Julian. such a relief at last.

Your not kidding tried everything just been out fitted paper fuel filter to Injector pipe no way anything will get past that. I have also changed all plastic piping and used petrol pipe clips. Will guarantee no air leaks or muck getting into injector. I have new Injector coming from Blackgates tomorrow to Try. I have also been given another supplier who comes highly recommended so hope after this all will be well. I have also washed clacks in white viniger blew out with air line fitted new balls in. Will steam again tomorrow toes fingers crossed now

I used a very fine filter they use on pressure water pumps to keep clean. Most injectors here work with water first if you use steam first the injector will over heat and not work. No idea what can be wrong other than the injector itself. I have ordered a no 3 hope to get from Blackgates tomorrow will see if I can get that one working.

Hi if it's the case that not enough steam to ouch it not sure why it works on the borrowed one. I am using 3/16 pipe same with globe Valve.

When Ben Pavier of BP Steam changed the piping and fitted borrowed injector he had it working Lovely. I got these two new ones to try but no way will it put water into boiler.

Surely just closing water so it's slow would then work I just don't know
