Thanks for your help people!!! I'll do some test samples first and give it some inspectigation...

So does that mean theres always some sideways movement between the axle box and horn block then???
22/04/2013 09:14:27
And the same question for connecting rods too!!!!?
22/04/2013 09:12:29
Hi everyone.

The garratt ive just started building will be the first engine ive made / designed that has a sprung chasis...

Was just wondering, all the axle boxes ive seen so far are just blocks with bored holes for the axle. So why doesnt the axle bind and lock up when only one side moves up.

All help appreciated!!!!

Thanks

Ian...

You say they dont teach how to fix cars ect but that sort of thing is usually a specific college course.

But even then, mending a car these days just means bunging a plug into the engine and letting a computer find the fault fo you!!!!

Admittedly i stole that quote from you tube!!!

Cheers dudes.... I'l ask my local inspector.

I cant see any problems with my design though.

Looking at the original post, seems like there are errors with published designs anyway

People were made to be loved...

Things were made to be used...

The reason the world is back to front is that things are loved and people are used.

Im sorry if this turns into another thread about the policies on boilers!!!!!! But is it true that inspectors wont even consider a boiler unless its a published design?

The problem ive got is that ive designed an engine myself (a freelance generic design) and so ive designed the boiler myself.

China make ALOT of things. But they have a tendency to fall apart. I found this through buying dirt bikes!

If your going to make things with profit in mind then your going to look at cutting costs, which usually means comprimise. And when it comes to engineering, thats when things fall apart!

I have to say i don't like the way your generalising!!!!!

Admittedly yes, most of my generation have no mechanical apprecition whatsover, and wouldnt want to get there womans jeans dirty even if they did! But we're not all like it.

Ive just got a job in engineering without any qualifications to do so, and was competing against quite a few other people.

I think the fact i build steam engines as a hobby and work on the ffestiniog learning to fire when i can helped though!

But everthing i knew up till then was self taught from M.E. or other publications.

If the drawings are accurate enough you could simply scale off of that....

Although that isnt a very acurate way i know!

So 10mm would be ok???
19/03/2013 10:30:59
Ive designed the whole engine myself. So there are no drawings to hand! Only the ones ive drawn on some old wallpaper....
Its sort of a darjeeling type engine but sits lower to the ground and has inside valve gear.
Paper shows its going to be about 9 foot long so its not huge. Still quite an animal though.

Im 19 so theres plenty of time

I am just starting to build a narrow gauge 7 1/4 inch garratt.
Was wondering what people would recommend thickness wise for the fame steel???
Any help appreciated!
Thread: a few questions about a garratt
04/10/2012 16:36:47

i am about to embark on building a 5" gauge garratt. i have designed it all myself, a freelance 2 foot gauge engine, and have a few questions about a couple of design features...

1) would steel be OK for the boiler, its only about 22" long?

2) would 8 gauge steel (about 4mm) be OK for the chasis construction?

3) does it really matter if the chasis is sprung? i'm not to bothered about the ride quality as i wont be sitting on it...

thanks...
