How come refitting the broken springs cured the rattle, did you see the "broken" springs? Ian S C yes I am still using the broken spring. It does not have the extra turns in the end ( actually the end of one is missing altogether) When I took the vehicle back they immediately drove it to hear the noise then put it on the ramp & changed the springs whilst i watched & drove it to see the noise stopped. They then had another set delivered in 30 mins from another supplier -while i waited - & it also had extra windings in the end unlike the original Renault ones. They swoped them - they rattled so they put the broken one back on as it had only cracked on the very end. What i like about the garage is that every thing stopped & my car was looked at immediately & i was invited to stand & watch whilst they examined it even though I turned up unannounced Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 02/08/2016 15:02:58 Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 02/08/2016 15:04:20 Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 02/08/2016 15:07:56 |

Im a bit confused - you say that the broken springs were replaced by OEM springs, so they should be spot on? No because the other manufacturers have extra windings in the ends of the springs |

Whilst the forum is on the car subject I have a problem that someone might know the answer to. I have a renault Kangoo van--12 plate It went for a service( non Renault same garage I have used for 35 years) & was reported as having a rear broken spring The garage fitted an OEM manufactured pair of springs & when I drove the vehicle there was a lot of rattling as though something had not been tightened up. I returned to the garage & they re fitted the old broken springs & the rattling stopped It seems that all the non Renault spring makers have extra turns in the ends of the springs & they rub together. The garage tried a couple of regular suppliers with the same problem So they went to Renault & they just say they are on back order & have no springs in stock with no delivery date for spares. So now I am stuck. My son needs the van to tow his boat to an event in September ( he kips in the back) but I do not want to fit noisy springs Anyone had the same problem & have they solved it please |

Most standards used in the EU are Euro Norms each country publishes it own standard with a national forward for us they are BS EN and for France they are NF EN etc, so in reality BSI sells quite small quantities of standards. Most of the experts BSI uses come from industry and a large part of the costs of these experts is paid by industry. For us to supply product into Europe we will still need to find some way of CE marking a lot of it is done by manufacturers who are allowed to self certify under a scheme run by BSI. It going to take some sorting out.
I hope that you are not putting the BSI down- ( a British disease I believe It is a world leader in advising on standards in industry,

A sizeable proportion of EU standards throughout industry have been derived from the British ISO & BSS standards. The British Standards Institute have enabled themselves to be self financing to a large extent by the sale of these standards to the EU. They also offered advice & have been at the forefront in formation of new standards. So in a lot of cases the changes would not actually be that difficult. However, I am not sure how the standards applicable to the model engineering hobby would alter. Obviously other countries had input such as the French Agrement certification scheme which was combined with things such as the BBA etc & these may be bread & butter for the lawyers

I fly model aircraft at a well regulated club. There is a private flying field nearby where we originally had the club but due to friction we found another dedicated field where we can fly every day except every other sunday when a gun club use it.We have specific local council planning permission for the use It was originally agreed with the airfield that the planes would not fly over our field due to the obvious danger. We are restricted to 400 ft . I believe they can fly below 500ft unless near people buildings etc or landing. They regularly fly below 400ft. In the past there has been the odd encroachment but recently it has got so bad that last Saturday we had a pair of byplanes doing pattern aerobatics over us, about a dozen encroachments plus 2 micro lights. Each time we have to land our models for safety, plus the recent bad publicity re drones might spread over to us & result in our hobby being restricted. It is all extremely annoying & the airfield seem to think that they can ignore original agreements |

I used water based lubs years ago on a Colchester lathe I had for very occasional use in my business. This caused rust build up & was a real issue. Modern ones may have changed, but if not, then I would prefer not to use them |

Phone you card provider and tell them you have lost the credit card..They will stop it..Send you a new one with a different number ..Bye bye Argos I was think of suggesting to Barclaycard that i might find it easier to change card provider if they did not help But your way seems infinitely simpler provided it does have a different number & I suspect they send one with the same No. but a different pin on the back which will not make any difference --- or will it?-- I know little of these things Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 30/07/2016 19:31:30 |

@Sam The round rod is actually a shackle. The flat rod is like a lever and is spring-loaded. It clicks onto the shackle to lock it. Apologies. I typed staple instead of Shackle -- Brain fade - |

1mm deep with a decent 3mm cutter in Ali should be OK though for now you would do better to stick to the 1/4 times diameter as your max so 0.75mm depth. You say an "end cutter" by which I will assume end mill or 4 flute cutter. Really for slots you want a two flute cutter or 3 flute as a compromise. Not only will the 2-flute give a more accurate flute width it will also clear the swarf better which may well by why you snapped the cutter. What grade of aluminium were you milling and did you use any lubricant?. Some grades can be soft and sticky which will build up on the cutter and cause problems. This can be helped with a cutting fluid, on Ali use paraffin or WD40 Sets of cheap cutters can be of variable quality Higher speed would help. Yes I meant a 4 flute end mill However, if an end mill will not cut a slot then what does one actually do with an end mill? ie If I cannot cut a 3mm slot with my 3 mm cutter & need a 2 flute slot cutting bit, then what would I use my 3mm end mill for ? Sorry if this sounds a bit silly but !!!!!! |

My son has one & from memory ( I have not seen it for a while so a bit of brain fade has to be allowed for) the lid pivots on a rod down the side which is part of the staple & locks on the opposite side when the staple is depressed into place. The staple is released by a combination lock. However, yours seems to have a flat rod down the side so perhaps it is different. I certainly did not hinge from top or bottom & was retained by the staple extending into the key storage area when locked

Michael Re your link Be very careful buying stuff from Argos I bought a chair from them 4 months ago & found that i had inadvertly agreed to subscribe to a thing called "Complete save". which cost me £ 15-00 per month deducted from my credit card payments. unfortunately as I was on holiday sailing for a few months my wife paid my card payments ( Now i bet a few of you are jealous !!!) so I did not know about this deduction. They claim that i filled in a form with address & credit card details etc etc but i swear i did not & I have been scammed. Argos were not prepared to help Barclaycard would not help so I have lost £ 30-00 for 2 months payment & i am waiting to see if a third one comes through .They do not reply to emails but did reply to phone calls ( how much the call cost is unknown)- the company is based in Switzerland & has a sister scammer company which is said to follow up the scam |

Yesterday I was doing my first "proper" milling operation on my warco mill. To insert a 3mm wide groove in an aluminium cover plate for an O ring. Plate was mounted on a rotary table I was using a virgin 3mm HSS end cutter obtained from Warco when I bought the mill. I was rotating the table by hand & not applying much pressure. Depth of cut 1mm, speed was 1125 RPM which is max for the bottom range on the M16 mill- it had not occurred to me to switch to top range after 1 inch of cut the cutter broke !!! Was 1mm too much for a 3mm cutter? was I running too slow? are Warco cutters carp? I am sure I was not applying much pressure. Was I using the wrong sort of cutter? Was I just unlucky? Any comments as to why I may have broken the cutter. There does not seem to have been a build up of aluminium on the cutter teeth when examined through a magnifying glass Thanks |

Difficult to say but I've had no problems with decent tooling from well known suppliers. I use these folks in the uk. Edited By Vic on 29/07/2016 10:09:49 Following advice from this forum about that supplier I visited their stand at Doncaster. They spent ages explaining tip technology, writing down notes on what to order next time & i came away spending far more than I intended. However, it was money well spent |

If like me you had built your own house ( twice now) then you would have built the garages first so you could store tools & important gear. Then you would have had the electric meter & supply placed in the garage so you could use electricity for the works & run the house supply from there when ready. That way the workshop & garages do not have the problems others have . Called forward planning !! |

One of the other reasons the small hen peckers (its not drilling) are used with a remote is that they are often used for demolition work where having the operator that close to the work would put them in danger. I'm sure we have all seen pictured of the larger hen peckers that fall fall through floors or have walls fall on them, With a remote you can crane it onto the top of a building an work it from a safe distance. If you have ever been stuck on the end of a compressed air breaker for a few hours you would appreciate that tool. I had quite a few & even with the silence skirts the noise was horrible. The vibration on your arms is a killer. I recall when I was a young lad of about 10, my father's ganger squared up to break some concrete -- he had a glass eye. I was nearly sick, when suddenly the breaker kicked, his eye popped out & fell on the ground. He cursed picked it up, wiped it on a dirty rag & put it back & carried on as if nothing had happened. Why not just say the word? I'm also puzzled by this and constant references to a "well known auction site" instead of ebay. Why? Rod I think that if you say the right word the genie will give you 3 wishes !! But you have to be quite old to have read the story of Ali Baba or who ever it was who released to stopper off the bottle & let the genie out. But as we all know- the trick is getting it back in Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 21/07/2016 07:23:52 Edited By Sam Longley 1 on 21/07/2016 07:25:49 |
